How To: Install Google Navigation on Your Donut Phone

!NO NEED TO DO THIS PROCEDURE!
GOOGLE HAS RELEASED NAVIGATION FOR ALL DONUT PHONES, GOTO THE MARKET AND SEARCH FOR IT THEN JUST CLICK INSTALL!

Want the new Google Navigation app on your phone? Here you go.

Thanks XDA-Developers Community!
Thanks Theomajigga!
Thanks Eric!

I. Before you begin (READ THIS)

1. You MUST have rooted your phone and have a custom recovery image and custom ROM.
2. You MUST have a custom ROM based on Donut! So no 1.5 based ROMs!

II. Install Google Navigation

1. Download this file:

Google Nav Update

Or Google Nav Update for AOSP

Thanks Joshua for the Mirror Links!

2. Rename the file to update.zip (make sure it isn’t accidentally named update.zip.zip)

3. Save the file to your SD card NOT in any folders, just on the SD card itself.

4. Turn off the phone.

5. Turn the phone back on by holding down home and power to get to recovery mode.

6. Select Apply Update and wait for it to finish.

7. Reboot the phone by holding down home and power.

8. Goto Settings on the Phone, then Applications, then Manage Applications

9. Click on Maps then click Clear Data.

10. Click on Market next, and click clear Data

11. Goto Settings >Date & Time

12. Uncheck Automatic and set the time to 11:59pm

13. Hit Home then do NOT PUSH ANYTHING until the time gets to 12:01am

14. Then goto Settings >Date & Time.

15. Check Automatic back on.

16. Go into the Market and download Google Voice (if you already have it, uninstall it then reinstall it from the Market).

17. Turn the phone off.

18. Turn it back on into recovery mode by holding down Home and Power

19. Click clear Dalvik cache (if it is there, if not ignore this step).

20. Click reboot.

III. Change Your Prop Files Back

1. Download the .zip file and unzip it to your computer.

Props Zip File

Thanks Eric!

2. Once the contents are unzipped, take the build.trout.prop and then build.sapphire.prop files and save them to the root of your SD card (not in any folder on your SD card).

3. Download Terminal from the Market if you don’t already have it and open it.

4. Type the following, hitting enter at the end of each line:

mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /sdcard/build.trout.prop /system
cp /sdcard/build.sapphire.prop /system
reboot

5. After your phone reboots you are all set! Open the app and give it a whirl!

  1. Hmmmm… Will this trick your phone into “thinking” its a Droid

For instance, will there be stuff missing from Market and certain apps wont be compatible anymore (something to do with the changing of build.props)

Or is this a new, better method with everything working??

    I’m very hesitant =/

  2. nice and quick… it updated my Maps icon, BUT the “navigate” option doesn’t show up when I load directions. trying to figure things out, hopefully before my evening drive!

    1. Dave,

“If “Navigate” doesn’t show up the first time:

      1. Go to settings
      2. Click on applications
      3. Click on Manage applications
      4. scroll to apps
      5. click on Maps
      6. Clear data

      OR

      Do this.

      Install Google Voice
      Uninstall Google Voice
      Reinstall Google Voice

It should work at this point.” – Theomajigga

  3. There are 2 different ones… there’s a aosp version as well..

    This will not effect market..

    Also unlockr

Once u reboot and start up..
    And clear maps cache
    Then
    Clear market cache..
Then hit force stop in the market as well

    Set ur time to 11:50pm
    Then press home..

Dnt do anything… let the clock go to 12:01. Am

Then set clocc bacc to automatic.. and everything should be in order..

Also clear dalvick cache as well..I suggest getting ravs dream recovery!..

  4. its just adding the new maps…. the moto droid isnt anything different it just runs android 2.0 this is just the maps app from 2.0 thats all

i flashed it and after boot maps force closed (without opening or anything) then when to clear data… hit home then hit maps another force close….

    RA 1.6.2

  5. Its does wit aosp..u jus gotta get think I’m mobile right now but

Go to xda-developers.com..go down to dream..then dream android devvelopment

U will see a nav for all 1.6 roms top post..and it has a link for aosp..

And I’m running 2.4.2 everything works as far as build.prop …jus set the time clear all possible caache… dnt open nothing until clock resets to 12:01 am

  6. hokayyy,
I flashed, rebooted, cleared maps and market cache, set my time to 11:59pm (weird thing happened: it turned to 1:00pm instead of AM)

set clock back to automatic after that, cleared dalvick. Installed, uninstalled, reinstalled google voice. And still have old google maps and not NAV

    what should I do?

  7. I am running cyanogen 4.2.4 and I used the AOSP version. The new layers work fine but no “navigate”.
    Can someone recommend a solution?

  8. After I get the nav working and i do app2sd, if i change roms will the nav still work?

Even if that rom i change is not 1.6 based…

  9. It works perfectly 🙂 I followed the instructions and no problems!

Thanks Unlocker, Where can I find the “Car Home” application? It’s not in market, Saw it on droid phone.

  10. dwayneb81

it should still work since most newer roms will actually work with 1.6 so this build should always be there..

    everyone new!

    1. Started from a fresh install of CM 4.2.4 (probably not necessary, but wanted to clear out yesterday’s maps install)
    2. Installed the navigation_update.zip (regular one) at that time as well
    3. Install/Uninstall/Install Google Voice
    4. Opened Maps, Tested Navigation
    5. Ran the Batch file linked Below.

Any way you do it, after the change you can run the procedure that was in my earlier post to get Market to recognize the prop changes.
    6. Cleared out Market Cache, Changed Time, Checked Market, Changed Time back

    Quote:
    1. Make sure Market is not running in the background
    2. Clear the Market cache from Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Market
    3. Go to your time and date settings. Set the time to 11:59 PM and quickly exit to your home screen
    4. Wait until your phone reaches 12:01 without doing anything
    5. Start up Market and test for protected apps
Worked like a charm. Thanks to those who got this app running on the G1, and to Clide8 for his instructions.

  11. What rom should I use, you instructions work but now my wi-fi does not work. I am using the “TMO OTA DRC83 – US with the v2.1.2- Expansion-Pack” and its by Enomther I think.

  12. Worked like a charm but on my mod version in the settings place its says something else then cyanogen mod 4.2.4 is that how its supposed to be?

  13. I went to wipe the dalvik cache within my recovery screen(RA-dream v1.2.3) and its giving me an error: run deldalv via console. Now I’ve never used the console, but i tried running what it told me and it the console said no ext partition found, which I know I have. Any suggestions?

  14. when done properly, the google map icon will turn into just “maps.” if anyone still has problems, try this. 1. go into recovery mode, 2. send cache to sd card 3.format sd card. google maps will now just be “maps”

  15. Hey did all the steps the other day. Took a couple of trys but finally got it. Cyanogen released his new update 4.2.5 and ran the update. The maps app still looks the same but the navigate is gone. Do i have to use the update.zip above or can i just follow the steps as is. Thanks for any info. It will kinda suck if you have to do this for every update. Thanks again.

  16. Does anyone have “Car home” application from Droid or “DockRunner” (You don’t need to buy $30 dock for droid to use as Multimedia station, DockRunner makes the cell think you have a dock)?
They are both free and are related to the Google navigator. The problem is I can’t find it on market.
People say everyone has equal access to market but I doubt. My friends have G1 but they also cant find some apps that you can find with the new android phones!

  17. Using Amon Ra’s Clean Donut, I believe this should be a good candidate. However, the 4shared URL links above are down (file has been deleted), so I guess I won’t be able to try…

  18. john,

its true apps from the droid are ran off a different biol.prob file.. thats what you have to replace also when you do the Maps w/ nav..which lead me to

    Stevohump,

you have to run the script to have your build.propb and build.sapphire.prop replaced so that it runs..

If you have a windows PC with the android drivers installed you can unzip this file and run the .bat

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30494/Nav%20fix.zip

Or you can take the prop files out, put them on the root of your sd and use the terminal.

    mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
    cp /sdcard/build.trout.prop /system
    cp /sdcard/build.sapphire.prop /system
    reboot

Any way you do it, after the change you can run the procedure that was in my earlier post to get Market to recognize the prop changes.

    1. Hey Ejay Droid,

We have all those steps listed because some people have to do them to get it to work so its better to list them all.
Can you tell us what steps you did to get it to work?

  19. Will step three fix my problem of the phone not being able to register on the network after I flash the update.zip in recovery? This application has resulted in me learning how to set a restore point and use it.
Thanks for helping all of us that have fallen from the herd.

  20. i was running cyanogen 4.2.5 then i did this and it worked great but for some reason it put me back to cyanogen 4.2.4 so when i updated to 4.2.5 again the nav is no longer there.

  21. i have the problem that when i apply the google nav update i have no more connection to the internet there is only a x on the network sign, i was waiting for 3 hours, but there was no network. what should i do?pls help

  22. hi,

im in the uk so will this still work??
also ive read that this will cause my google voice search app to stop working, is this corret?

    thanks mr unlockr

  23. @angelo,

I had this problem too, I re-flashed 4.2.5 but still had navigate button afterwards but today after work i went to use it and it was no longer there. I’ve heard rumors that the market or maps app checks itself and removes the feature if it finds it to be hacked, will investigate more.

  24. Hi unlockr.. thanks for that, but its a bit late…
I couldn’t resist it and gave it a go, now my automatic time settings are all messed up. When I turn it on I get the wrong time and date!! Wot shall I do???
    HELP ME MR UNLOCKR!!!!!

    Many thanks

  25. so now that the smoke cleared and a flash was made as i posted it is easy

go to ur settings>applications>manage> clear cache for maps and market and well as force stop them…
reboot your phone.. run the update_navs.zips.. (if u have rav recovery leave em as is if not rename to update.zip) remember they shout be placed in the /sdcard/ folder.. the very first one no sub folders!

heres the link for the updated donut version:

    http://www.4shared.com/file/152183903/63a0f6a1/update_navigation.html

    here is the aosp version
    http://www.4shared.com/file/152184315/398dfba/update_navigation_AOSP.html

then when flash.. after flash.. clear your dalvik-cache.. then reboot..

when phone starts up.. go tour time settings and uncheck automatic and set time to 11:59 PM..and press home fast..just incase the time is about to change!

wait til 12:01 AM… then go back to your settings and check the austomatic in your time settings..

then go to market and make sure you are good search for private apps suck as NESOID…if its there your good… go to handcent if u are running it and make sure you can locate contacts in the compose seection…if so your good… then go to maps…note* its not longer googlel maps!..its just maps.. open and hit the get directions button in the menu!… enter a destination and then get route.. a new section shoudl pop up with directions and at the top you shall see NAVIGATE.. if you see it your good!!!.. if not run this script.

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30494/Nav%20fix.zip

and repeat the maps/market cache and clock steps!

  26. nothing seem to work at all i have the clean donut amon rom that is the download and i tried doing the update i followed all the steps but all i get is the new map icon and it force closes on constantly. so i decided to try the dwang 1.12 ROM and there was no maps at all when the phone booted

  27. Wow! I downloaded the link from EmoGamer and followed the instructions above and it worked flawlessly! I’m running Cyanogen 4.2.5. I love it. Tried it today going to my friend’s house and it even showed a quicker route than what I usually take. Thanks!

  28. Hey unlockr, so I keep trying 2 dwnload the google maps app update frm the market and when the app is installing it says “package was not signed correctly” and dosnt finish the download…any ideas of what is going on ?

    1. Dizzy49,

This procedure is obsolete now. Just goto the Market and download the navigation program on your Donut phone (if you have an HTC Hero on 1.5, you will have to wait until HTC releases the 1.6 update).

  29. Well since most people who have rooted their phone are still unable to install the new version of Google Maps on to their phone, maybe this How-To should be updated to help us out.
I have a G1 with 1.6 rooted. No other ROM, just rooted 1.6

  30. heres the link to original post…
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583123

i updated from market with ease… yet i did do the steps i posted above b4 hand..

the signing for the build.probs are key cause thats what tricks your phone into thinkin u are running a droid….with android 2.0…

so im not sure what else to do since i havent had that prob.. i just recommend goin this route then upgranding map in market.. thats just my opinion.. to each his own tho!

  31. i already have the navigation beta but i cannot install updates from google maps 3.3.1 it says installation error the package file was not signed correctly

  32. 3.3.1 will not install to rooted phones. The ‘Package file was not signed correctly’ message prohibits the installation after download. Can anyone from the unlockr help out with this? Thanks!!!
