How To: Root the Motorola CLIQ (Updated 04.09.10)
December 24, 2009 in Android How To's, Featured, How To's, Motorola DEXT/CLIQ How To's
I. Download and Install the Motorola Drivers
1. Download and Install the Motorola Drivers:
II. Set up the SDK/ADB if you haven’t already.
Use our How To Setup ADB procedure and then come back to this once you are done and can see the serial number.
*Make sure you do the step in the ADB procedure (On your phone, click Settings > Applications > Development and make sure USB Debugging is on.)
III. Flash the Rooted Update
1. Download the update and save it somewhere on your computer.
2. Plug in your phone via USB cable.
3. Mount the SD card so we can transfer files to it.
4. Save the update.zip file you just downloaded it to the root of the sd card (NOT in any folders, just on the SD card itself). Once it is done transferring, leave the phone plugged in to the computer.
5. Turn the phone off
6. Turn the phone back on by holding down Camera and Power (keep holding it until it tells you to stop). Then press volume down to get into recovery.
7. Hit Alt L to bring up the menu. Then select Apply Update and wait for it to flash. Click reboot device.
8. NOW, GOTO THE HOW TO LOAD A CUSTOM ROM PROCEDURE AND FLASH A CUSTOM ROM TO GAIN FULL ROOT ACCESS! (FLASHING A NEW CUSTOM ROM WILL ALSO FIX YOUR KEYS BEING MAPPED WRONG!)
Thanks HandlerExploit!

Hello here is my problem! I attempted to root my phone, and loaded the recovery one instead of the rooted file and bricked my phone. (so stupid) so I followed the directions on another site which I believe caused me to down grade my phone from 2.1 to which ever update was changing the date and time on peoples phones. So now my phone starts from motorola straight to motoblur log in. When I attempt to log in to motoblur it get the time and date error message. So I have tried step 6 and it takes me to the fastboot but when I prees the down volume it goes black and nothing happens? I NEED HELP

I would do a full wipe (ie from recovery), then reflash the orange update. That should hopefully fix anything else they had you do
AFTER that, do a search for cm4morrison and try out that rom…it’s a 2.3 rom that works pretty good.

Problem : When I get to the bootloader screen and try to select apply update, it tells me that the ‘update.zip’ file is “bad” and goes on to abort update. I’ve redownloaded the ‘update.zip’ file and even unpackaged then repackaged the files and still no luck. ANY HELP?
Thank you!

the first time i did this it fucked up if it does that to you which it seems it has try and reboot into recovery mode again and re do the process with the update zip it should pop up with three choices again telling you what to do hold menu+back it should now reboot with the orange box (cell provider in france) your phone will load to the main screen plug in phone once it gets to main screen and go into usb mode delete the update zip and put on the custom rom you want (i used the superosr you can look for the one you want) and the flash image from the page in step 8 from there you now put the phone back into charge mode using your adb script type from the folder you downloaded your sdk tools into(you will have to cd into that folder ie : cd c:program filesandroidandroid-sdkplatform-tools <- this is the path where my adb is located in and then follow my steps) type
adb devices
your phone should show up in the terminal then type
adb shell
you should have a # on your computer terminal from there type
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-cliq-v1.5.2.img
once it finishes another
#
should appear now close the command window
next power down the phone if its plugged in its going to automatically turn back on and when it does
hold the power and camera button
this will put you back into recovery mode it should look different than it did before
from there hit the volume down key
you'll now either have to hit alt+l to get the options up or they will already be there
use the volume down key until you get to wipe click the home button then hit the home button again on the wipe to factory default setting that will run and complete then you go back to the 1st options list and click flash from zip use your custom ROM or the one i used and the itll flash through the setting youll probably have to hit menu+back to get it to reboot or something i just did it but dont remember if it did automatically or if i had to click something and presto your phone will turn back on and youll enter your google account and life will be good
