How To: Root the HTC Aria (Unrevoked Method) Updated 04.12.11

I. Before You Begin

1. This is the easiest method available to root.

2. This method will also flash a custom recovery image so you can start flashing ROMs immediately.

3. On your computer, go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > and Uninstall HTC Sync if it is installed before you continue.

IMPORTANT UPDATE 04.12.11 –

If you run into issues with the procedure please read these issues/solutions a reader left in the comments and see if that helps:

I ran into a few issues, but tweeked a few steps and was able to successfully root my Aria. My phone is running v2.1, and I used Unrevoked 3.2.

Some issues that I read other people ran into (which I did too, but was able to get around):

– Issue #1 – First of all, Unrevoked won’t work if Sync is installed. HOWEVER, some people may need to install it initially because it comes with two drivers which may be essential to recognizing your device when you plug it in. So if your computer isn’t recognizing your Aria, then yes, Install the HTC Sync package. After it is successfully installed, uninstall HTC Sync ONLY (leave the HTC Driver and BMP USB Driver installed.)

– Issue #2 – If HTC Sync won’t install properly when you plug in your phone: For me, my ADB driver couldn’t be updated, so the automatic install didn’t work. I had to manually install Sync. You can do this one of two ways: 1) copying the HTCSync.exe file from your SD card (what HTC support tells you to do) or 2) Download the file directly from HTC support (don’t just Google HTCSync.exe to install it! You never know what kind of bad stuff is out there. Go to HTC’s website for it.) If you want to go with #1, when you plug your phone in, choose “Disk Drive”, open the removable disk folder, copy HTCSync.exe to your computer and run it. If you want to download the file directly from HTC, go to HTC’s website –> support –> Choose your device (Aria) –> go to the downloads tab, download the “HTC Sync for all HTC Android phones.”

– Issue #3 – After you turn on your phone to the Hboot screen, and connect the USB, there’s no option for “Hboot USB”: For me, this option never came up. But if you pay attention to the highlighted “Hboot”, it becomes
“Hboot USB Plug” after you connect it to your computer. This means its already in Hboot USB mode, so you can proceed with the rest of the rooting instructions.

– Issue #4 – Unrevoked reboots your phone….several times, when it’s finally “Done”, instead of the ClockworkMod Recovery screen, you phone reboots to your Home screen: Don’t freak, just check your apps to see if “Superuser Permissions” is part of your programs. If it is, Unrevoked worked; but wait, you’re not done. You still need to backup your phone via the ClockworkMod Recovery screen. I got to this screen by turning off my phone via the power button. Instead of powering down, the ClockworkMod screen popped up for me, and I was able to proceed with the rest of the rooting instructions.

Hope this helps.

Big thanks to Toes for these additions!

II. Root and Flash a Custom Recovery Image

1. Download the Unrevoked Rooting App

Unrevoked (Updated 09.20.10)

2. Double click the Unrevoked program you downloaded. If using Windows, then click on the file that appears called Hboot Driver and follow it’s instructions to install the modified HBoot drivers OR click here and download the drivers and install them manually.

3. Follow ALL of the instructions on that how to install the hboot drivers page. (If your phone doesn’t have an option for HBoot USB though, Hboot is fine)

4. Once the driver program is successfully installed (and your phone should be sitting in Hboot mode at the end of that procedure), take out the battery and put it back in then hit the power button to get it back to the normal home screen.

5. On your computer, right click the Reflash file and run as administrator. It should open Unrevoked and say “waiting for device”.

6. On your phone, click Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure USB Debugging is checked ON.

7. Plug in your phone into your computer via usb cable.

8. It should automatically locate your phone that is plugged in and you can just follow the prompts to continue.

9. Done! You are rooted and have a custom recovery image!

III. (Optional) Load a Custom ROM

1. Head over to our How To Load a Custom ROM on the HTC Aria procedure.

Big thanks to the Unrevoked Team!

  1. when i get to step #8, it doesn’t locate my phone. i tried restarting the program and running it as administrator but still unsuccessful.

i have an htc aria…plz help.

    1. I had the same Issue, when the device is in a normal state (i.e. not bootloader) check the Device Manager in your computer, under ‘Other Devices” if it says Android 1.0 install the drivers as per instructions above.

If you installed the drivers, and it says “ADB” under ‘other devices’ right click and click on update driver.
and select list the drivers available on my computer> and select Android bootloader interface. (DO NOT BROWSE to the ANDROID USB DRIVER folder again)

Once, installed you should see “android bootloader interface” under ‘android phone’ and ‘other devices’ is no longer there… start your unrevoked and your device is now recognized..

Let me know if that works….

      1. hey dude … it worked on my phone thanks … but now I got another problem…after It says rooting and things like that … at the end says ……internal error……….what happened can you help me with it?

  2. so when i try and go into hboot mode my phone wont recognize it will only show, simlock fastboot recovery etc, but hboot or even boot and when i go into the device manager under “other devices” it says unknown my device is not being recognize, am i doing something wrong?

  3. when i get to step 8 i have debuging on and my aria on charge only but my computer says “Windows needs to install driver software for your ADB”. Idk whats wrong and ive tried to redo the steps but same result

  4. Tried using my windows vista (don’t know if that makes a difference) when i get to the step to plug phone in on debug mode and open unrevoked it doesn’t recognize my phone. tried reopening it. still doesn’t recognize it. what can i do so it will?

  5. So everything is okay when I plug my Aria by usb and get to bootloader , “windows says make sure drivers installed ” and then it verifies it and goes into the bootloader screen and then unrevoked says “waiting for HOOT” and nothing happens , please help ASAP , anything I select on my aria makes revoked say communication interupted

  6. im having the same problem as joshua
everything worked perfectly up to “waiting for root… (safe to restart if this doesn’t work)
i dont know what is wrong with it, but i followed the steps to a T

  7. I’m stuck on stage #8 too. I followed the directions and in the device manager it says Android bootloader interface the way it should be, the HTC sync is not installed and it still does not locate my phone. Could it be because my Win 7 is not genuine? or maybe some other program blocks it? I have no idea what else can prevent from it to locate my phone…

    help please…?

    Thank you!!!!

    1. It may seem counter-productive, but what worked for me was installing HTC Sync since it will also install HTC drivers along with the program. After the set-up was complete, I immediately uninstalled HTC Sync and left “HTC BMP USB Driver” and “HTC Driver Installer” on my computer. Good luck!

      1. thanks, this worked for me too! I had to re-install HTC Sync, then uninstall -only- HTC Sync, leaving the other two programs. then unrevoked recognized my aria

    1. If by 4th choice you mean “HBOOT USB”, don’t worry about it. On the Windows HBOOT driver installation instructions, you’ll notice it says “On Evo 4G, you will have to select HBOOT USB”. If you have an Aria like me, you won’t have the HBOOT USB selection. Carry on without selecting it.

  8. I’ll just add to this huge list… this doesn’t work. First of all, I had to have the phone plugged in before starting reflash or it would never find the phone. The first time I got past that, the phone stayed in the bootload forever – had to pull the battery. Started all over, and got as far as “waiting for root….” which never happened. Restarting the phone will evetually get you to the “sometimes this happens” message – except that seems to happen every time.

  9. Hi guys,
If you haven’t gotten it already, I want to help. If you are having problems in step 8 where the reflash program will not find your phone, here is what you do. Install and run the HTC Sync program ( I know it told you not to, but it’s ok.) Now, after it’s installed and run, connect your Aria and make sure the computer recognizes it correctly. Once it does, then uninstall just the HTC Sync program ( leave the HTC Driver Installer). Now, rerun the reflash program and it should work correctly. Mine did. Hope all works well. Thanks a bunch guys, great and easy root for the Aria.

    1. u r grt man… i didnt have HTC but after downloading it and uninstalling only HTC Sync i got my mobile root… thnxxx

  10. i finally got it rooted and running cyanogen 6. i was trying on vista and on win 7 but nothing so if u know someone with a MAC then all u need to do is download unrevoked and plug in ur phone with debugging on and in a few minutes ur rooted.

  11. I have an HTC Aria and I just tried this method to root and the Unrevoked product cannot find my phone when plugged into the computer in charging mode when usb debugging is on and all the the steps b4 that I double checked and I did them correctly. pls help

      1. do you know how to fix the reflash error that says “firmware is too new.” I just got my htc aria and I haven’t installed any automatic updates so my firmware is version 2.1-update1

  12. Ok I did this and it worked but now my phone wont connect to my Wifi in my house it says obtaining ip address constantly and wont ever find it…any ideas?

  13. OK, I got the superuser permissions app but it does nothing. can someone please let this beginner know how to use the super user to get rid of unwanted apps that seem to be burned in the phone without an “uninstall” option?

    1. Superuser means you have root access, the app itself doesnt do anything except monitor what apps are trying to use root access and asks you for permission to allow that app.
Go to the Market and download Terminal Emulator. Open it and type su then hit enter. If it pops up asking for permission say allow. After that you’ll have a # symbol which means you have root access. After that you can Google the terminal commands to remove applications (you’ll need to mount your system partition – mount -o r,rw… will begin that command. Then rm /system/app/thenameoftheapp.apk will actually remove the app from the system app folder (and therefore from you phone entirely), BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU REMOVE.

      Good luck!

  14. im having trouble at the end of step 8 however I’m getting an error “validation error: backup CID is missing” and im not sure what to do at this point

  15. I rooted my htc aria, and now it will not download apps from the market. But when I root it again, the app is downloaded. This is very odd and so I do not know what went wrong.

  16. I am having a bit of trouble. I tried it on both of my computers (WinXP and Vista) and the same thing happens. Once I plug in my phone via USB (with USB debugging enabled – I haven’t installed Sync either) it brings up a prompt to install hardware drivers to ADB. At this step, the tutorial says, “follow the prompts,” but when I do, it doesn’t find the software to install.

UnrEVOked does nothing at all other than say “Waiting for device.”

    I’m confused.

      1. I am not certain but I think you have to have the adb drivers from either HTC Sync or the android SDK in order for this procedure to work. I think simply turning off the HTC Sync service but not uninstalling it may be the trick. Not sure, a mod will have to verify this. I went over to the XDA developers forum and found a pre-spun Ubuntu 10.04 live cd that was fully prepped and scripted for this procedure so I used that and it worked famously.

    1. I had the same problem. The driver installed successfully but upon starting up the unrevoked application, it would not get past “waiting for phone”. I have closed and re-started the reflash_package to no avail. Is there a trick I am missing?

      1. You may need htc driver as well, you could install the htc driver during installation of htc sync but without installing the sync due to the sync program may interrupt the flash process.

      2. You may need htc driver as well, you could install the htc driver during installation of htc sync but without installing the sync due to the sync program may interrupt the flash process.

  17. I’m new to this tech stuff but I really want to load 2.2 sense on my aria. Can I trust the rom?…How do I go back to the original Rom I bought the phone with just incase I don’t like it, and how do I back my phone up?

    1. I just did mine and it works quite nicely. I am very happy to have the bloatware gone. The phone seems a little more responsive and 2.2 is a cleaner OS. Now that I have done it and re-installed my apps and synced my calendar/contacts/email in just a few minutes. I highly recommend doing this. As you can see below, some folks had problems getting the unrevoked process to detect the phone. I did mine in linux so I didn’t have that problem. I think you have to ignore the “uninstall HTC Sync” instruction and just have the service turned off on your PC before you start the process. I am not entirely sure of this but I have seen others mention this as a possible solution. Post back if you do it to share how it went for you…

  18. Once you root you can backup via recovery mode (you’ll figure it out as you go).
You can unroot by searching our site for unroot the aria (the unrevoked procedure might have an unroot button as well).
    Good luck!

  19. Once you root you can backup via recovery mode (you’ll figure it out as you go).
You can unroot by searching our site for unroot the aria (the unrevoked procedure might have an unroot button as well).
    Good luck!

  20. Ok so I did all of this and the whole process worked fine but my phone still isn’t rooted. Unrevoked said that it was successful but when I go into Terminal Emulator and do the SU thing, it says “permission denied”. Which I take to mean my phone is not rooted. Any ideas why?

  21. i just successfully rooted my htc aria. it was so easy on a mac. didn’t have to load any drivers. if your on a mac just jump to #6. just plug in your phone and run unrevoked, and go. it was so easy. its good to be free from att’s grip. now all i need to do is flash me some cool roms. any suggestions.

hey everyone i followed: DarthKajar and it worked!

            Hi guys,
If you haven’t gotten it already, I want to help. If you are having problems in step 8 where the reflash program will not find your phone, here is what you do. 28. This is my first android phone and for some reason i keep getting “internal error: am reported error starting service.” ??? don’t know what that means, but doesn’t sound like a good message. I tried it on winXP and win7, both give me the same errors when using unrEVOked.. any solutions from anyone will definitely help.

  29. i get to step 7 or 8 it starts downloading itll reboot itself and say waiting for reboot and then unrevoked says internal error:am reported error starting device

  30. i get an error with my htc aria everytime. debugging is set, set to charge, phone even restored. is there anything i’m missing. should i have done anything to the sd card to prepare it. i’m running on a mac by the way. thanks.

    1. On the mac i had the same problem. On windows however, if you put the phone in htc sync and the restart the phome. In the rebooting process connect it to the computer and start unrevoked. When it starts you should get a warning box. cick yes or ok ( i dont remember) which it has and it should start

  39. for those who have revoked 3.3 still saying waiting for device after driver installations, open device manager and manually set the adb driver as the android bootloader driver. Revoked will pick it up and start working again

  45. Just completed the Aria Root !! had to indeed re-install HTC device drivers onto windows XP, allow the install, and then presto ! Flash installed in under 10 minutes….A great flash with recovery, and a great root method. I just love the thought of sticking it to AT&T…..I’m free !!!
    Now….which ROM……HMMMMM……g
Many thanks to all of the DEV’s that make this possible for me, the average user…Not any more, I’m Rooted !

  46. Hello, so, when i tried this on my old WINDOWS OS XP, it says connection with the phone has been interupted, and i do everything else perfectly, any help? The main reason i want to do this is to get Cyn- 6.1 ….

    1. Same here man. I’ve been looking around and its close to impossible to root aria 2.2 cause of the new Hboot version.

    2. Badinfluence12001

I’m getting the same message also when using unrEVOked and can’t use the alternate methods because at&t disabled side loading on my ARIA

  47. After completing the driver installation, when the phone is in Hboot, I saw “Android Bootloader Interface” in Device Manager. I took out the battery and rebooted to normal, then ran unrevoked, but it stuck in waiting for device. I looked in Windows Device Manager, the driver I installed is not showing, instead it has Other Devices ->ADB. What’s going on?

  49. im stuck at the unrevok part it keeps saying error “is your firmware new?” i dont get it i did everthing

  50. also got the too new error. for me the root did not take though.

i just upgraded my phone to the new froyo build. (i was waiting to root it earlier because i figured the 2.2 patch would have locked everything up anyway)

has anyone gotten around this yet?

  51. ErikMarcelino

I updated my aria to 2.2 when att came out with the update, now when i tru to root my phone unrevoked says it unable to root “is my firmware new?”

  52. I tried this method and it also said my firmware was too new, I believe it is because i got the official upgrade from htc to android 2.2 before trying to root it. How do i know if it went through? and if it did fail is there a way to do it on an aria with 2.2?

  53. i just tried this too, and got the firmware too new message too. how do i get around this? i upgraded to 2.2 after i got the phone, and am now trying to root it with unrevoked. thanks!

    1. the procedure mentioned above in conjunction with your reply resulted in a PROPER root process. I appreciate the extensive instructions that the main procedure failed to mention. Thanks 😀

  55. getting the firmware too new massage and it fails to acquire root with android 2.2.any word on when this will be fixed?

PLEASE HELP. when i start my phone up ot automatically goes to the clockwork recovery. Therefore I CANNOT access any part of my phone. Even if i click reboot system now, it goes to clockwork. It was running good for a while until i tried to install froyo using the procedures on this site. OMG PLEASE HELP IM SCREWED.

  58. I followed all of the directions for the rooting process. For some reason the superuser app never shows up on my phone. I have tried the process over and over again and the same result remains. The unrEVOked recovery flash tool keeps saying “We didnt get the root. This happens sometimes. Please restart and try again.” Can I PLEASE get some help?

  59. Natatalia Moore

the root didn’t work for my phone because my it says that my firmware is too new. Is there a solution for this

  60. Michellebrivero

Downloaded this last night and thought that it worked.  I have super user app but it still says my phone is unrooted.  I have HTC Aria 2.1.  Any ideas what might have gone wrong?

  61. 2.2 can be dwngraded, though it involves a loong process and requires copying hex from a generated goldcard to your SD just to downgrade back to 2.1

  62. Finally i gained root on my htc aria even though its on the original 2.2 update here is just the little trick head over to http://alpharev.nl/x/beta/ download it boot your your phone into hboot mode to get your device serial number ,then fill out the little form about ur device to get key number then reebot your device connect it to to ur computer, however remember you must have installed all the necessary drivers in order for the alpharev to work. open the alpharev zip install the apharev application then wait for it to load it should ask for your key number, Type it in then your phone should go into hboot don’t panic the apharev is doing it work then wait a minute  it should show a purple alpharev sign to let you know it has removed the security on your phone .

Reboot your phone then download superoneclick rooting application install it and root your phone

Dont forget to put your device in usb debugging at all times when doing this.

Continue this process at your own risk feel free to donate to the alpharev community

    thanks

  63. If you have 2.2 this method will not work, do a search on after revolutionary to root phone, unlocker needs to update this info.

  64. I tried at least 10 times, but after the first restart, the message on the PC reflash is saying: Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. Try again” and again and again… I need help please. Thanks.

  65. My phone isnt showing the hboot usb selection after plugging it in to my computer what should i do? all it says is fast boot recovery clear storage and simlock.

  66. After choosing the Android browser to install I get the message that ” the best driver software for my device is already installed. Windows has determined that the driver software is up to date.” How do I override this?
