Motorola Announced Seven New Android Phones And Only One Has an Outdated Android OS

Last week at CTIA in San Francisco, Motorola announced seven new android phone for the U.S. but only one has Android 2.2. Motorola doesn’t have the best record on updates, just ask any CLIQ, Back flip, or Devour owner. But the good news is the other six phones has Android 2.1.

The seven phones that Motorola announced the DROID PRO, BROVO, CHARM, FLIPSLIDE, FLIPOUT, DEFY, CITRUS. The DROID PRO is the only one out of the six that has Android 2.2 OS but both the DROID PRO and CITRUS will be available on Verizon Wireless. The FLIPOUT, FLIPSLIDE, and BRAVO will be available on AT&T. And the CHARM and DEFY will be on T-Mobile.

The Droid Pro will be out by the end of the year and is called an entry-level phone. This phone will have a 3-inch touch screen and a 528 GHz Qualcomm processor. This phone is a “green” phone by 25% of the phone made out of recycled plastic and certified carbon free.

The BROVO will arrive October 17. This phone will have 3.7-inch WVGA touch screen, FM radio, 512 MB internal memory, and an added 2GB SD card. The phone will have 800 MHz processor.

The Motorola Charm will have 2.8 inch touch screen, 3 megapixel camera with zoom.

The Motorola FLIPSLIDE will be an HSDPA device. 3.1 inch HVGA screen, a 3MP cam, 256 MB internal, 2 GB SD.

The Motorola FLIPOUT will come out on October 17. The phone will have a small 2.8 inch screen QVGA pivot touch screen, 512 MB internal memory, 3MP cam, support up to 32 GB SD card, and a FM Radio.

The well known DEFY will be water resistant and you can view the specs by clicking here.

The Motorola CITRUS should come out Q4 2010. This is a starter phone that has a 3 inch screen, 524 MHz processor, pre loaded with BING.

The thing to keep in mind when buying a phone with an outdated Android OS is the founder of Android, Andy Rubin, said

“The OEMs who don’t want to do the work to adopt the latest release are just going to see the impact on what consumers want. We’re actually in the middle of an interesting time because we’re actually seeing whether consumers recognize the value of each one of these releases. So far it looks like they do. So I think OEMs will adjust their strategies and their time to market for these new releases accordingly. There’s no advantage to the OEM of using an older version, and I’d say there’s a consumer disadvantage.”

He is right about having any Android OS that’s not the newest is a true disadvantage because by buying a phone with an older OS you will miss out on many fixes, features, and many apps.

Please give us some input on why you think Motorola and other phone makers are still putting out, out of date Android OS and please tell us what phone makers have told you if you have ask this question to them.

  1. Shouldn’t it read…

“Motorola Announced Seven New Android Phones But Only All But One Has An Outdated Android OS”

Seems the tittle is missing the “BUT instead of AND ONLY + ALL BUT ” …

    1. Welcome back Y314K!

The title reads “Motorola Announced Seven New Android Phones And Only One Has an Outdated Android OS”, how is that not correct? (I actually had to change it from what Craig put originally…)

    2. Sorry about that and “only” should have been taken out. I walked away from the article after I started to write the title and I was going to put “only one isn’t out of date”. I forgot what I was going to put for the title when I got back to it and when I wrote the rest of the title I read it over and it looked right to me. I guessing it looked right because I knew what it meant.

Anyways, why do you think Motorola is still making phones with an out of date Android’s 2.1 OS instead of the making all their phones with Android’s newest OS, Android 2.2?

  2. If you take a keener look, you will notice that all the Android 2.1 devices released are based on Motoblur. Word is that Motorblur aint yet optimized for Android 2.2, but its in the works.

  3. I find it strange that its Motorola only using the latest ARM Cortex-A8 (ARMv7) C.P.U core on low end Android handsets. Others use the now outdated ARM 11 (ARMv6) C.P.U core.
