How To: Overclock Your Perm Rooted / S-OFF T-Mobile MyTouch 4G or T-Mobile G2

I. Before You Begin

1. This is for the T-Mobile G2 and T-Mobile MyTouch 4G AFTER you have permanently rooted and gained S-OFF.

2. You must be using a custom ROM that supports ADB Remounting! If it doesn’t work, try using a different ROM.

II. Flash the Kernel

1. Download an overclocking kernel file for your device from the respective XDA forums and save it to your computer (do NOT extract it).

T-Mobile G2
T-Mobile MyTouch 4G

2. Download the SetCPU apk and save it to your computer as well.

SetCPU

3. Plug your phone in via USB cable and mount the sd card so we can transfer files to it.

4. Copy the SetCPU apk file and the Kernel .zip file to the root of your sd card (NOT in any folders just on the sd card itself).

5. Unplug the phone.

6. Open ROM Manager and click Reboot into Recovery and wait for it to boot into recovery mode.

7. In recovery mode, select backup and backup your current ROM just in case.

8. Now, select flash zip from sd card and choose the kernel file and wait for it to finish flashing.

9.Select reboot system now when it is done.

III. SetCPU

1. Once your phone reboots, open a file manager (Linda File Manager from the Market is free and good if you don’t have one).

2. Use the file manager to navigate to the SetCPU .apk file and select it and follow the instructions to install it.

3. Once installed open it and select use kernel.

4. It should show your overclocked speed now (you can change it as you see fit, but be careful!). Done!

    1. I did this just as described, and my phone keeps rebooting at the HTC screen. I tried rebooting into recovery (holding volume and power) and it does the same thing.
Did I brick my phone? How do I fix this?

      1. dude dont do this as it is posted online.
i did the same thing as posted online and my phone stucks on white screen and stays there for a long long time. then i removed the battery and put back in. then i press the volume keys and it will go to screen with options HBoot, Fastboot and Recovery. i select the Recovery by pressing the down volume key.then press camera button instead of power button. then you will find some options . so go to the option backup and restore. then hit with camera button and there you will see more options in which you have to select the restore option. and there if you have taken already backup of you HTC VISION G2. there you will find your backup. then select this backup and let it done. then you will find your phone starts working again.

  1. Wait a while longer, then if nothing pull the battery and put it back in. Then boot into recovery wipe data and reflash the kernel. Then continue. If you still have issues you can always restore through recovery using the backup you should have made.

  2. Why do you have to have a custom ROM?

From what I have seen, I can not find a ROM that I like for the MT4G. Not a fan of the Ice glacier blue tint. What is the best place to find a collection of ROM’s for this phone?

    Thanks.

  3. What setting do you recommend being over clocked? I dont what to kill the phone, or the battery. Any suggestions, Im on the phone and online with it a lot, so of course I want to get as much as I can out of it but I dont want to kill it.
    thanks

  4. Reboot in recovery just leaves me at a screen with a red triangle and exclamation point and wont go any further. Is there a another way

  5. hey I am doing this on my G2 and all I keep getting when i use rom manager is a phone with a red triangle what am I not doing right?

    1. I have a mytouch 4g and I’m getting the same result. I’ve tried it probably 10X now. I don’t think its us, I think the instructions are poor or false.

      1. Its the kernel. If you have a custom rom you have to use a kernel that is for the rom. Otherwise your phone can’t boot correctly because the 2 files don’t match

  6. Does this work with the new ice glacier 1.1.4, I would be putting it on Mytouch 4g. also what is a good cpu range that isnt going to kill the phone but give it just a little more boost. thanks for all your hard work!!!

  8. Shouts out to Unlockr!!!…I dont know ish about all this, but with their step by step tutorials I temp rooted, perm rooted, loaded custom roms and overclocked. Damn I love technology!!!

  9. Hey Dave should I select the “set on boot” box on SetCpu? Everything worked fine, just not sure about that, thx.

  10. ok so if u get a phone with a red triangle, above the boot into recovery it says to download the clockwork files, dl them and retry

  11. I’m having the same issue and it hasn’t been resolved.. when kernal is installed and then into reboot, the phone just endlessly reboots, forcing me to go back and restore.. is it a kernal issue? out of date?

  12. i see the endless reboot problem that Josh Bohl had has not been resolved..cause im having the same issue, done everything exactly as told, so im thinking kernal out of date or what?

  13. after installing the G2 zip file and rebooting the controls are inverted. If i clock on the right side it affects the left same for clicking on left side and right responding. any idea what’s wrong? I followed the instructions correctly.

  14. Running G2 w/ CM7, setcpu worked out of the box, no custom kernels or anything. I guess Cyanogenmod’s kernel accepted it fine. I was using CM6 before and SetCPU worked fine for that as well. Got my G2 up to 1.5ghz w/o breaking a sweat, setcpu only, nothing crazy custom, no scripting or custom kernels, just Cyanogenmod.

  15. my phone freezes after i bump up my clock speeds! everything else went exactly as the video you made. no mistakes

    1. If you have rom manager you can fix your revolting problem. Go to the g2 rom list and choose a rom you like. Take out your sd card and plug it into your pc. Place the rom on your your sd card. Place it back into your phone. Torn your phone back on using power + volume down. When the white boot screen cones on choose the recovery option. Once your in rom manager do a wipe. Them flash your rom by choosing the install zip option. Reboot and you’re done

  16. I used this method and overclocked it to 1.1 ghz but can watch videos not even my own videos that I recorded I have htc sense 2.2.1 Rom plz help

  18. Hi Dear Unlockr!

After doing all the procedures, will this be permanent overclock, or do i have to overclock it each time i boot up the phone??

    Thanks

  19. I haven’t done this yet but for some reason with the themed glacier rom my phone all of a sudden at random times gets stuck in a reboot loop. so it may not be due to the overclocking for those of you with the same issue.

  20. I have a G2 and followed everything up to step 5. But when I get to step 6 and try to boot into recovery I get a phone/triangle/exclamation mark sign. I don’t know what to do. HELP!?!!

    1. u have to flash a clockword mod recovery using rom manager make sure u have root acces download rom manager from market for free so download it open click flash clockword mod recover y now reboot in to recover no more pro

    1. Yeah same issue there, except my rom is the cyan one that they downloaded in the custom rom thing. What to do what to fuckin’ do.

    1. A just download p15img from megaupload or somewhere and put it on your sd card, then reboot phone into bootloader and it will load up for you, i had the same problem, something you downloaded erased your phones system… if you cant get it to work email me, edavis65@gmail.com

    2. Take out your battery. Put it back in.
Hold your volume rocker down, then press power.
Then proceed to restore your system (assuming you’re using clockwork and made a backup like you should have).

  21. Hey my G2 is clocking in at 1516 max. Damm how was this possible. i used the Setcpu from applanet. But is the same from market. EXTREMELY FAST. Im running MIUI 2.3.3. .. But usinf ADW Launcher. OMG this set up is great

  22. To answer a question I received. No I’m not using stock karnel. Or rom. It only clocks in at 14.. something. Like the developer did, using the G2. I’m on a custom Gingerbread from ROM MANAGER.. or use one of your own choice. The MIUI rom also has a great one. But I don’t remember what I clocked in at. It was less. Enjoy …….

  23. Once again like THE UNLOCKR always tell u to do. Back up ur data before u do anything to ur fone. Even that stock rom u start off with. Answer to a question I received. If ur stuck at the HTC screen just reboot into recovery and restore. Same reason u should always back up

  24. sigh…I have perm rooted my G2 using gfree method, but I have no problem with the stock rom since I’m froze all the bloatware, I also overclocked to 1ghz but it dosen’t last through reboot….there has to be another way?

  26. My camera app is not displaying the “image preview” I just see a black screen. Is that due to this mod? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I’m using Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 on a myTouch4G.

  28. I followed this process and it worked but then my phone stopped recognizing a usb connection to connect as a drive and my nifty animation when the screen turns off stopped so I restored back to my previous backup

  29. I was able to do this using a different but similar method on a custom 2.3.3 but every time I do this my hotspotting no longer works and neither does my camera. Any reason y (able to OC to 1.9GHz)
