Rage Exploit Used for Root Gets Fixed by HTC

According to Paul over at Modaco via a tweet…

“Desire Z / HD users, accepting the .72 OTA will prevent you rooting with VISIONary or other ‘rage’ exploits.”

So guess what ladies and gents? No more universal rooting using the Rage or Visionary method (which used the rage method) after the next update for your HTC phone most likely. As you can tell by Paul’s tweet, the first phones to get this update are going to be the HTC Desire Z and Desire HD. With that in mind, I’d bet the MyTouch 4G and T-Mobile G2 here in the States aren’t far behind.

As most of you know there is NO reason to install an OTA from your carrier/manufacturer if you are rooted. You can just flash a custom ROM that a developer put the OTA in to and you’ll probably get it faster than the normal OTA would have gotten to you, but you’d also keep root access, etc. So if you want to keep root access, as always, don’t install OTAs.

Nothing to fear for most of you at the moment, but just a nice heads up that a new exploit will be needed going forward…

Thanks Paul!

  1. Anyone working on a new way of doing it? Been stuck for hours with both visionary and manual rage before I saw this article… saddest part is I accepted the OTA just a few hours before I decided to flash my brand new dhd, and now I can’t 🙁

  2. I’m a Bell mobility customer in Canada that just got a desire Z. Does this affect us and how can I tell if I have the latest OTA?
