How To: Flash Honeycomb (w/ the Android Market) onto the Internal Memory of the Nook Color

I. Before You Begin

1. You must have done our How To Root the Nook Color procedure. If not, do it and then come back to this procedure and continue.

2. This method will erase your entire internal memory off of the Nook and flash Honeycomb onto it. This improves the Honeycomb performance over running it from an SD card but also means that you would need to do our unroot procedure in order to get back to stock.

3. This ROM also requires you to flash this ROM using a custom recovery image on an SD card (will explain what that means later) so this means you need a memory card and the WinImage program from the How To Root procedure.

THANKS TO Samuelhalff for all his hard work making this ROM! If you like what he’s done, please thank him and/or donate to him to show your appreciation.

II. Create a Recovery Image SD Card

1. Download the Clockwork Recovery image and save it to your computer (original post found here).

Clockwork Recovery Bootable SD Card Image

2. Extract the .zip file somewhere on your computer.

3. Take your MicroSD card and put it into an external sd card reader then plug that into your computer.

4. Open WinImage and select Disk > Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on Physical Drive and select the SD Card/SD Card Reader and then select the Cwm .img file that we unzipped earlier and wait for it to finish.

III. Flash the Honeycomb ROM

1. Download the latest Honeycomb ROM from here and save it to your computer.

2. Copy the honeycomb ROM (and leave it as a .zip file) to the sd card you just flashed using WinImage. Put it on the root of the SD card, NOT inside any folders just on the sd card itself.

3. Once it is done transfering, remove the sd card from the computer.

4. Turn off the Nook.

5. Put the SD card inside the Nook while it is off.

6. Turn on the Nook.

7. You should be greeted by the Clockwork recovery screen, on that screen select mounts and storage then select format system, then select format data, then select format boot.

8. Now make sure system and data are NOT mounted (they will say “mount system” and “mount data” if they are NOT mounted).

9. Push the power button to go back, then select Install zip from sd and then choose zip from sd and then select the honeycomb ROM we put on the sd card earlier and wait for it to finish flashing. It will take a while.

10. Once it says install from sd card complete, turn off the Nook.

11. Remove the sd card and then turn the Nook back on. Enjoy!

  1. Look nice!
    Questions on internal memory.
The original internal memory is 3G + 5G. After install Honeycomb, how many internal memory is used? How can the 5G memory be accessed?
    Thanks

  2. Thank you for the clear instructions. However… while everything installed per your video, I cannot download from Market (I have logged into my Google account). When I plug the Nook into my PC (Win7) USB it sees the drives (16GB microSD Card) but cannot access them to transfer files.

  3. Clearing cache on Market doesn’t seem to work. With newer builds of Honeycomb, do we use the same method as above replacing the zip file with the new file?

  4. After installing Honeycomb onto NC, does it retain the NC portion of the operating system (Shop, library, settings, etc. that are opened by the center arrow key–the one with the little half circle at the bottom of the screen) or is it now a pure Honeycomb device with no real sign of NC after internal install?

  6. Issue: Market starts to download an app and then stops and won’t continue
Continued to have problems with this until I set the correct time zone.

  7. I successfully flashed honeycomb on my NC and able to download apps from market. But after connecting my device to pc through USB I can see new drives (two) on my computer but unable to open them to write any files. I want to transfer my PDF ebooks for reading. I appreciate if you could provide ur expert advice on this.

    Thanks!

  8. Ok, the new HC v4 2nd edition is slightly larger than the last v4 and wont fit on the sd card with CWM 128mb. how can I get around this?

  9. I have an 8GB Micro SD Card for storage. After getting honeycomb running I tried to format my MicroSD card using Settings->Storage Erase SD Card. Now I can’t seem to to find a way to mount it. I’m looking for a tool that will allow me to reformat it properly.

  10. Love the ROM! But there are some things that reaaally need to be fixed…like the multi-tasking. Starting to get tired of rebooting because of all the open apps I

    cant close.

  11. I just completed these steps and am surprised and pleased with the results! Please let me know if there is any way I can help the developers further this project along – having various extremely minor problems with all sorts of things (icon labels don’t appear in horizontal mode, desktop customizations are not saved after reboot, some wallpapers don’t work, occasional weird mislocated clicks/touches, and some more serious screen size issues (stuff falls off the edge of the screen sometimes, buttons are mislocated in app windows, apps fail to work because of unexpected display size, etc…) would be very happy to help troubleshoot or continue to relay my usability notes/issues. – nico_nyc

  12. This worked great up until I installed the zip file and and it started loading and froze…..any suggestions? I reinstalled all the programs and it continues to freeze when I install the final zip file….Help please

  14. Thanks for the instructions…worked flawless. I want to exchnage my nook (the back is not on there quite good and I am stickler, hard to please).

Is there a way to go back to stock from here? I saw a link from the last post (how to root a nook with AutoNooter) did not see one from this one.

  15. Many thanks. Honeycomb works flawlessly, but for some reason I am unable to get an IP address for wifi. It worked fine prior to the flash. Also, Bluetooth appears to be nonexistent. Any thoughts?
    Thanks again.

  16. How did you get that download to work? Maybe this is a stupid question, but the format is different, and I can’t figure out how to use the .tar.gz file. I REALLY want to be able to use the 2nd edition of HC!

  17. After flashing the CWM_128, my 8 gb card shows 114mb of 118mb free. Since the new Honeycomb zip is 194mb, it doesn’t fit. One thing- WinImage won’t show any drives in the list, so I had to use Win32DIskImager.

    1. Solved the Winimage not finding the disk by right clicking the app and running as an administrator, but the bottom line is, writing the image to the SD card turns it from an 8 gb card to a 118 mb card, and the zip file we need to put on next is 190 mb. I see no way around this, yet many people seemed to have breezed past this with no problem. What’s the trick, guys?

  18. I installed HC v4 2nd additin and everything seems to work OK except videos… Can’t play almost any video. Oddly enough the demo above is one of only two that I have gotten to play. Please help my wife is giving me grief for messing with her Nook…

  19. followed these steps:

but still can’t download apps…please help…I love honeycomb!!!! don’t want to revert to the old root version…but might have to since can’t download apps…
Tried to download free apps Catholic One…can’t—tried w/ all the paid ones…can’t either…can’t download Angry birds…my kids are sad 🙁 please help….

    Thanks & God bless

  20. Also having problems w/ Google talk:
    1. it seems to load by default; can’t change settings.
    2. can’t connect w/ Google talk…able to sign in on google acct…should use same acct for google talk

  21. Honeycomb looks great, but the market doesn’t work, and the prescribed fix has no affect. Back to Nook OS, I guess.

  22. TO EVERYONE THAT CAN’T GET THE MARKET PLACE TO WORK!!!!
Set the correct time zone, then set the correct date and time. Reboot. Try it again.

    1. That worked PERFECTLY… for two downloads. Then it stopped working again. stopped market and google framework, cleared cache, rebooted, nothing. Back to broken honeycomb.

  23. I’m a newbie w/ Android. However, I successfully followed your instructions. Thank you.

However, Nook Color does not have much space left after installing honeycomb. Can you please advise on a solution to utilize my sd card? I have a 16 Gig Class 6. I would like to install my apps to the sd card.

  24. Ok so i followed all instructions to the tee and was able to root my nook…came to installing honeycomb and i get up to the inserting of the sd card into my nook and i go through the install procedure…i take out the sd card and my nook will not turn on at all without the memory card inserted into it…someone plz help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Can anyone please help with the market, I can’t get it to work. I have force stopped the market and google framework and cleared both caches, rebooted, still not working. I even tried setting the correct date and time and rebooting and still nothing please help

  26. Works like a charm. But I don’t see the calendar. Anyone know how to get the calendar working? The calendar app is missing.

  27. I rooted my nook color with the Honeycomb 3.0 and everything is worki8ng perfectly. I was wondering if there is a way to download adobe flash player on it. I tried to do it from the adobe web site, but it does not recognise my device. can anyone help me on this?

  28. I have been trying to get this to work all day, I think that I have about got it but when I boot to Honeycomb, my internal memory is showing as only .92 GB, any ideas?

  29. Cash-down-the-drain

I should let people know that it is NOT a good idea to format /system or /data, as i’ve found out after trying this tutorial. Now I formatted those two, and I cant even install honeycomb cause i get this “Installation failed” message everytime.
So anyway, DO NOT format your nook, unless you want to have just wasted 250 dollars.
Last time I follow a tutorial from here.
