HTC Thunderbolt gets updated, not Gingerbread sadly

The word last month was that the Thunderbolt will get the Gingerbread update by June 30th but it’s been more than week in July now and there’s still no info on when the device will be getting updated.  Furthermore, many Thunderbolt users must have already downloaded the latest update (which brings the version up to 1.70.605 from 1.13.605.7) with hesitant hopes of seeing Gingerbread magically appear, only to be disappointed by seeing Android 2.2.1 yet again.

Not much is known about this current 73MB update but many users have reported the Mobile Hotspot and My Verizon apps getting updated – the My Verizon app now keeps the users informed on the amount of data used, now that the unlimited plans on Verizon have been scrapped.

As for the update that every Thunderbolt is actually waiting for, we got nothing as of now.

  1. I just got off the phone with Verizon’s Tech Support about the 1.70.605 update.  Since I updated, the devices has become painfully slow to operate, often stuttering or locking up while switching between apps or trying to make a phone call.  I’ve also noticed that SMS text messages are sometimes being sent to a random/incorrect recipient instead of the intended one, which can be dangerous.

The SMS problem, says Verizon, is “a known issue.”  When I asked about how to revert back to the previous software so that I can use my phone again I was informed that doing so would void my warranty.  Here’s hoping they push out another update soon to fix the damage that this one has done.
