Installing and using a custom recovery on rooted phone is essential, especially when backing up your current ROM and flashing a new one on a rooted phone. Here’s how to flash the recovery image onto the HTC Thunderbolt.
I. Before you Begin.
You must be rooted. If you are not, head on over to our How to Root your HTC Thunderbolt.
II. Downloading Rom Manager.
1. From your home screen, select the Android Market application.
2. In the search field, type Rom Manager (It’s a free application). When it locates it, select it and choose install.
3. When it’s done installing, return to your home screen.
III. Installing Clockwork Mod Recovery.
1. From your home screen, open up the applications draw.
2. Scroll down until you find Rom Manager.
3. Make sure your USB cable is not plugged into your phone and open up the Rom Manager application.
4. After the application opens, select the first option, Flash Clockworkmod Recovery.
5. A small window will open up, asking the user to confirm the phone model. Make sure it says HTC Thunderbolt. If it does, press it.
6. It will now flash the recovery to your phone. When it’s completed select OK.
7. To verify it flashed correctly, while still in Rom Manager, select the second option, Reboot into Recovery. Once it boots into recovery, you should now see a screen that says ClockworkMod Recovery v.3.1.0.2 at the top.
Thanks of course to Koush for his awesome recovery image!

This is “How to Flash a Clockwork Mod Recovery on the HTC Thunderbolt,” not “a custom recovery image.” It doesn’t explain how to flash something other than Clockwork.

Is Clockwork mod a recovery image? Then this is still how to flash a custom recovery image, it just happens to be that one
Why would you need to flash a different one, if you dont mind me asking?

I came here looking for help flashing a recovery image. Yes, it was Clockwork, but it wasn’t the standard—it’s the new touch beta. And the title of this post made it sound like it would help me install a recovery image. Instead, it applies only to Clockwork Recovery Mod and didn’t help me because it was too specific when the title made it sound general.
