HTC Bootloader Unlocking Update: Web-Based Tool Coming This Month

Those of you patiently waiting for HTC to unlock the bootloader on your device, might not have to wait much longer. HTC has announced via Twitter and Facebook that they will be releasing the tool that will allow HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G, and HTC Evo 3D users to unlock their bootloaders via the web.

The user will register their email with the web-based tool (after accepting a bunch of warranty disclaimers, of course) and then be able to plug in their device to a computer with the SDK installed and receive a ID Token for that device. Using that Token you can then head to the web tool, input it, and receive a bootloader unlocking code for that specific device. After that, simply input it into the device, and viola.

Of course, we love the concept and are happy to see HTC following through. I can’t help but still be a bit disappointed in this news by the fact that they also mention that all of their devices will still ship with locked bootloaders going forward and using this tool seems to be the only way to unlock the bootloader. Why not just not lock the bootloaders like you’ve always done in the past? What huge disaster occurred that warranted the locking of bootloaders in the first place? Aw well, a step in the right direction at least…

For those of you that don’t want to wait, feel free to check out our procedure on gaining s-off (unlocking the bootloader), flashing a recovery image, and gaining root using the Revolutionary tool that just came out. Good luck!
