Samsung Releases a Comparison Chart: Galaxy S II vs iPhone 4S

Not to be overshadowed by Apple’s announcement today of the iPhone 4S, Samsung has sent out a chart showing a comparison between their latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S II to the new iPhone 4S.

·         Screen size benefits scale by AREA (length x width), not just diagonal;  the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II has 42% more screen area and Sprint / T-Mobile versions of Galaxy S II have 58% more screen area than the iPhone 4S.

·         The Galaxy S II HSPA+ network speeds are at least 50% faster with AT&T 21 MBPS and three times faster with T-Mobile’s 42 MBPS than the iPhone 4S’s 14 MBPS HSPA network.

·         Galaxy S II continues to have the thinnest smartphone design with the fastest network speed on each of the networks carrying the smartphone (AT&T, Sprint & T-Mobile) including today’s announcement of the iPhone 4S specs for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

·         Open Ecosystem – Consumers can use the Galaxy S II to buy music from Amazon, Rhapsody, or a variety of other music services, as well as multiple cloud music services supported such as Amazon, Google Music and multiple video chat clients available for use including Google Chat and Skype. The Samsung Galaxy S II is not limited to a single manufacturer’s storefront or app store.

I do have to say, that they do have some valid points. But then again, I’m sure these points will be lost on most potential iPhone buyers…

Feel free to chime in with your own comparisons.

  1. I love it…Samsung Galaxy S line runs the market!!!  That’s why apple started with all the silly law suits, because they can not beat out Samsung.

    1. well when you look at how the galaxy phones look compare to the iphone its pretty easy to mistake a samsung phone to an iphone since they do look similar to each other there were a couple times with some of my friends that see a galaxy phone and they were like is than iphone o nvm its a samsung so i can understand apple suing samsung for that im not a samsung guy but i do love their screens and how great they look i just dont like how its plastic and its feel like its gona break from a single drop felt too light in my hands but thats y we love the android phones you have a variety of choices to choose from 🙂

      1. Yeah, the problem is… Apple creates such a hype that people are eventually convinced that anything that performs the same function must be the same thing.

For instance, I have had various mp3 players for YEARS before the iPod ever came to be. When the iPod came around, it was suddenly “iPod” this and “iPod” that. I kept getting “other brand” mp3 players and I don’t know how many times people would say, “Is that an iPod? I’ve never seen that one before.” It had nothing to do with the fact that it “looked” like an iPod. They saw a device on my side with headphones to my ear and the only thing they could think of was “iPod”.

Likewise, I have a Motorola Droid (the original one)… and I STILL get people asking me, “is that an iPhone?” People just relate the term “iPhone” to any rectangle that lights up and is a phone.

It’s similar to the way someone sees a cotton swap and calls it a Q-tip, even if it’s not a Q-tip brand cotton swap… or will call a tissue a Kleenex even if it’s not a Kleenex band tissue.

Apple is really really good at getting their brand names implanted in the mind share of people to the point where they think that anything that performs the same function might be an “iSomething”.

        1. Maybe so, but wich phone looked like an iPhone BEFORE the original one was launched? I have a 4 year old Samsung and it looks a lot different from an iPhone. On the other hand, I also have a Galaxy S and it’s like a carbon copy of the 3Gs. That’s a fact, dude.

  2. They forgot to add “Number of crashed per day” column. After using Samsung Captivate for less than a year, I am convinced that Samsung’s hardware quality is far inferior than Apple’s

    1. Likewise, I don’t know how many times my iPhone would lock up and I’d have to use the ‘ole POWER and HOME button combo to do a hard reset. Worse, it once locked up so bad that it wouldn’t even respond to the POWER/HOME combo. According to Apple, I had to let the battery drain down all the way so that it would shut down, THEN charge it so that it would regain consciousness. Thankfully, this worked. I wished I could have just pulled out the battery and put it back in again.

      1. On the Samsung Galaxy S, you need to do this (remove and insert battery) about twice a week, because it does not respond to anything anymore.

I did not have something like this a single time with my iPhone, not with the 3G and not with the iPhone 4. It is just rock solid and stable like hell. And Apple has love for details. They offer things that are really usefull, not just the highest numbers on paper. THAT’s the BIG difference between Samsung and Apple.
Samsung can make great hardware, but absolutely such in Software.

They betray with their 3D-TVs, as they advertise Samsung D6-series as FullHD 3D capable, but it only offers Half-HD for left eye and Quarter-HD for right eye. And users that complain about that issue are threated as idiots.
Now they start to change the “Full HD 3D” Logos on the packages to only “3D” and on some websites in some countries they changed Full HD 3D to Smart 3D. Why should I use shutter glasses if you only get 540p?! So with Samsung you get the disadvantages of both worlds: You need expensive, heavier, battery driven 3D-glasses, you have flickering (not really noticable) and you get lower resolution that with passive, cheap and light polarized 3D-glasses.
Also their TV has other serious software bugs too. The TV did crash really often and had some other bugs. Although it has a cool design (thinnest TV of it’s class) and I guess the best panel for its class, Mainboard and Software are BIG CRAP!! And because of their politics in that case I am through with that cheater-company called Samsung.

I now have a Panasonic with crisp and really great, real FullHD 3D. Never ever that Samsung crap anymore!!

        1. Bought Panasonic Full HD 3D-TV 6 months ago but now ended at the repair shop.
I should have listened to a tech guy at the BestBuy and buy Samsung instead !

      1. Moved to Samsung galaxy 2, 6 months ago and haven’t regret the move to Android.

It a great phone consider we were all waiting for iphone 5 and got a iphone 4.

Consider SG2 has 4G, faster wifi, faster chip, facetime which works both mobile and wifi although not called facetime. Big and better screen.

And no itunes, which I came to loath everytime sync would erase my purchases.

What really funny is it doesnt match SG2 and fanboi’s will still be prepared to buy.

Plus Korean quality will beat any china slave factory, full stop.

    2. i have now had my gs2 in the uk form may and only had to re-start it 2 times for lockup’s, both due to things i was doing to it

i had the 1st one and this is way better when it comes to problmes, very limited and no slow down

    3. Really. Apple products for simple minded people because if you just wanted a phone stay with Nokia and if you want tech get a android, siri a joke just compared it with voice actions and she lost, and battery life now for iPhone suck because they now have to catch up with rest of the pack

  3. They forgot to add “Number of crashed per day” column. After using Samsung Captivate for less than a year, I am convinced that Samsung’s hardware quality is far inferior than Apple’s

  4. I had a Galaxy. It was nice when it worked…..Going to order the new iPhone. My iPhone 3gs was superb and I have regretted buying my Galaxy ever since. I will not be making the mistake of buying a cheap copycat Samsung clone again. :((

    1. Agreed with you thats y i waited and i dont buy galaxy s instead i bought galaxy s2 🙂 . Can u compare iphone 3gs with iphone4??

    2. Guest ,You must be paid by APPLE to post such a nonsens here
Anyone with brain  knows iPhone hardware quality is far inferior than Samsung G2.
even the new 4S can’t compare to the S2 which was released almost a year
      earlier.
There’s nothing innovative except for Siri software.

    1. I feel exactly the opposite !
I bought an iPod Touch when it was launched and I liked this wonderful product very much. I then bought an iPhone and found it great. After some time, I started to be fed up with Apple policy (captive customer, closed philosophy, using my phone the way I want forbidden, so on). I switched to Galaxy S2 and was astonished to see how Samsung made a better product than Apple. Better hardware, stable and open system (I really did not encounter more bugs or crashes in android than in iOS), more free and quality software, ability to customize my phone the way I want.
My point to the Ferrari / Toyata thing is that: Apple is good at selling cars in the way they make you believe their cars are Ferraris. Instead, Samsung is actually making and selling real Ferraris. You should take a test drive and see it by yourself…

        1. And the iPhone is not maded in USA its maded by Samsung or Asia companies why Do you think Samsung makes a better product

      1. ok!!you stay with Toyota and I wil stay Ferrari… and I can´t see any toyota in formula one on the first place…

        1. Idiot… They used to be in F1 until the economy tanked and pulled out. Just like Honda. What ignorant response. Hey but what do you expect from an iPhone fanboi

    2. Samsung makes 26% of iphone components. The memory that makes your iphonesl remember things and the.ferarri car you just said is made by samsung. Samsung makes A4 and A5 processor 🙂

  5. there is a big mistakes in this comparison
samsung says 800×480 resolution while we offer 4.5 inch screen size
iPhone 4s have 960×640 resolution with 3.5 inch screen
    and there is more.
this is called butterfly effect in physics … this will lead to destroy Galaxy

  6. “I do have to say, that they do have some valid points. But then again, I’m sure these points will be lost on most potential iPhone buyers…”…because people who buy apple products are idiots lol

  7. Unfortunately for Samsung, few people purchase products based on spec sheets.  While these spec sheets are interesting for debate, most intelligent people understand there is much more to a product than that.  Most intelligent people also understand that spec sheets prepared by any company will always show the details which favors their product.

For example, take the first item… processors.  Samsung is busy showing clock speeds as if that has any real meaning in this day and age.  That’s like comparing the quality of cameras by megapixel counts (more on that in a minute).  For those actually interested in the details, they would know that Apple’s A5 chip has a substantially faster GPU on board which helps make the total performance feel faster on the iPhone.  They’d also know that the A5 chip has a dedicated image signal processor which allows for substantially better camera performance times, etc.

Similarly with cameras, how about discussing the quality of the lenses?  How about the quality of the backlit CMOS sensor or the hybrid IR filters, etc?  Most importantly, how about the quality of the overall images?  Obviously, the list goes on.  Still, these spec sheets provide lots of fun for the fanboys while the rest of us sit back, shake our heads and smile.

In the meantime, maybe someone should tell Samsung that they lost the “thinnest smartphone” claim as the original iPhone 4 was proven to be thinner overall.

    1. umm, really. Have you even looked at the specs. The sgs2 is definitely sleeker than the far outdated iphone 4, not to mention the A5 is actually a samsung chip with apple packaging on it, a chip samsung has chosen to no longer include in its own phones because it is outdated, so trying to say its a good chip is saying samsung had a good chip but moved onto a better one, not to mention the camera quality is still to be seen, but the camera quality on current galaxu s 2 tests have shown to be remarkable and very well done in all sorts of color and light situations.

There is just so much wrong with your information thats its like trying to read someone’s article on why buying a 50cc scooter will give you better performance on the highway than buying a harley.

Ill just ave my time arguing on the rest of your post, cause I know that arguing with fanboy idiots is like talking to a brickwall. All you will do is regurgitate the apple propoganda shyte lol

      1. “umm, really. Have you even looked at the specs. ”
        Yes.

“he sgs2 is definitely sleeker than the far outdated iphone 4,”
No.  It’s not.  Really, just the multiple buttons on front (of the sgs2) alone makes it looks ridiculous, especially for a touch based device.  Aside from that, it’s clearly a design that is very derivative of Apple’s work.

“not to mention the A5 is actually a samsung chip with apple packaging on it, a chip samsung has chosen to no longer include in its own phones because it is outdated, so trying to say its a good chip is saying samsung had a good chip but moved onto a better one”
Really, this is where your reply just makes you look stupid.  We could argue about appearance being subjective, but you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about.  Samsung happens to manufacture Apple’s A5 chip.  The A5 chip is an Apple design and was never an option for Samsung to incorporate into their own phones.  Yes, Apple could use the off the shelf designs that Samsung does, but in the case of the A5, they have a competitive advantage over Samsung in both price and overall performance.

“Ill just ave my time arguing on the rest of your post, cause I know that arguing with fanboy idiots is like talking to a brickwall.”

Yeah, don’t let the actual facts get in the way.  I can imagine how arguing your opinion against the actual facts would seem to be an obstacle for you.

        1. I love how you just say it is this way cause it just is and fail to do anything more thanact like another marketing ad for apple.

I suppose you also wanna claim that the a4 processor isnot just an underclocked samsung hummingbird cpu as wellhuh

See the problem here is that i do know what i am talking about being the software engineer that i am, and just because apple puts its own packaging on a chipdoes not make it a new chip. The truth is that apples a5 is outdated, and even if it was new when the ipad 2 was released it is not new now. The phone version is clocked slower and with more power constraints. Saying it is up to date as of today would be like saying that having an m600 on a laptop makes it up to date as of todays standards….and thats the thing….we are judging by real world modern day standards. Not apple standards and not standard from six months ago.

As for design issues between samsung and apple. It is purely a personal choic. The iphone is not slimmer if you go by Apples own measurements and i tend to like having capacitive buttons that allow me to work outsid the app developers own design in setting upapp exit keys and other functions. Thats why android still bests apple…because of more functionality.

          1. “I love how you just say it is this way cause it just is and fail to do anything more thanact like another marketing ad for apple. ”

Seriously, why is it incumbent upon me to prove you’re an idiot?  Are you incapable of doing even the most basic Google search?  Fine.  Here’s just a quick sample link that I found in 2 seconds which at least shows the GPU performance.  Even the link below should make it clear that these are not simply just CPUs, these are Systems on a Chip.  As you can see, Samsung’s Exynos chip (used in the Galaxy S2) doesn’t even hold a candle to Apple’s A5 in GPU performance.  Further, Apple’s chip has other features such as a dedicated image processor for better image processing and camera performance, etc.

            http://maypalo.com/2011/09/12/iphone-5-vs-samsung-galaxy-s2-processor-speed-benchmark-test/

So, no, the A4 is not an underclocked Hummingbird as you suggest and no, the A5 is not a Samsung design, etc.  You only look foolish when you continue to repeat such nonsense.  Please, do a little research and stop wasting my time.

“The iphone is not slimmer if you go by Apples own measurements ”

Sorry, but this issue was already officially settled in the UK.  The iPhone 4 has a uniform thickness.   The Samsung GS2 is a tapered design.  It is marginally thinner at one end, but thicker at the other.  The iPhone 4 was ruled to the the thinnest “overall”.   Not that any of this really matters.  Rather, it only serves to demonstrate the point that the iPhone 4 isn’t exactly an out dated design considering the fact that others that have had plenty of time to try, but have not been able to rival it.  I’m not suggesting the SGS2 is a bad design, after all, it is heavily inspired by the iPhone 4.  Rather, there’s no ground to say it’s better.   As for the buttons, it’s rather sad that the OS requires such extraneous buttons.  Most would agree that more clutter does not make for a better design.  Though, in the end, I’d agree design is subjective.

          2. “See the problem here is that i do know what i am talking about being the software engineer that i am, and just because apple puts its own packaging on a chipdoes not make it a new chip. The truth is that apples a5 is outdated, and even if it was new when the ipad 2 was released it is not new now.  ”

If you continue to make ridiculous claims out of ignorance, then there is nothing more for us to discuss.  I tried responding with a URL yesterday, but apparently that post is still awaiting moderation.  In the meantime, if you’re actually interested in the facts, I suggest you do a Google search and look for performance comparisons between Apple’s A5 and Samsung’s Exynos 4210 SoC (used in the Samsung Galaxy S2).  For example,  I’m looking at a performance benchmark for various chips on a site (maypalo dot com). The article is date 9/12/2011.   They show an OpenGL ES 2.0 test.  The 1.2 Ghz Samsung chip gets 42.5 fps.  The 1 Ghz A5 gets 85.7 fps.   While these chips may have similar CPU performance, the GPU performance in Apple’s A5 completely blows away anything else on the market right now.  The A5 also has a dedicated Image processor for better camera performance, etc.   Likewise, your claim that Apple’s A5 is outdated is simply ignorant.

As for your claims to being a software engineer…  Why do you bother mentioning that?  We both know there is no way to verify your claim.  You also have no idea about my professional background.  Trust me, making mention of such things adds nothing to your credibility, especially when your claims are easily proven wrong with a simple Google search.

    2. Another brainwashed iDIOT fanboi. Your saying people who’d rather have a 4G phone, the capability to expand memory, and pay less for more in a “phone” are fanboi’s? Your examples are not enough to hide the fact that apple rapes you for $$.

      1. “Another brainwashed iDIOT fanboi.”
Well, there’s the first sign that you have no intelligent response.

“Your saying people who’d rather have a 4G phone, the capability to expand memory, and pay less for more in a “phone” are fanboi’s?”
Where did I say that?  Perhaps you have a reading comprehension problem.  I’m simply indicating that a “spec sheet” comparison provided by Samsung is about as useful as a spec sheet comparison provided by Apple.  Both are expected to be biased and to show their product in the best possible way.  My point was simply that most intelligent people don’t buy phones based on “spec sheet” comparisons.   Perhaps you’re not part of that group.

“Your examples are not enough to hide the fact that apple rapes you for $$.”
For the sake of discussion, perhaps you can provide a few examples of this.  No?  Or, do you prefer to just talk trash?

  8. I like how on the points where the iPhone is better they aren’t highlighted in blue like the Samsung wins are.  I realize they’re trying to sell their own product over the iPhone… but come on now.  Some of the Samsung wins are especially subjective, like the displays.  The battery life is already good enough on the iPhone, so I’ll take the retina display ANY day over the super AMOLED.

Also the carriers…  (I’m speaking about the United States with this… the situation I’m sure is different in Europe, for example) The Galaxy isn’t offered by Verizon, the largest carrier in the nation, but because you can get the Galaxy on T-Mobile, that makes it better?  ???? I’m honestly confused at that last “point” that Samsung gave to themselves.

  9. If there woulda been an iPhone 5 (larger screen especially) I woulda been a taker. That not being the case, I’m making a beeline for the Galaxy. That AMOLED screen is just incredible. The other things I’m waiting for Apple to wake up on is home screen widgets – can’t do without ’em! I’ve got an iPad, and it’d be some much better with some widgets.

  10. LOL, Samsung has the need to lie in this comparison, that is evidence of incapacity. They say Samsung Galaxy SII is able to be used as Remote for HDTVs, but iPhone not. That is a simple lie. There are media remote Apps for every big manufacturer on the App Store as well. Even Samsung offer their Remote App in the App Store. Why lie here?! Are they soo poor?!

And other stuff is strange: 960×640 is not more than 800×480?! New to me … And a maximum of 48GB is better than a maximum of 64GB? Very strange … Of course 1080p Video is better that 1080p with image stabilization.

I like the camera of the iPhone 4 – but I always criticized that there is no image stabilization at filming – it is impossible to record a good videos hands-free without stabilization.

From beginning I said: It has an accelerometor and Gyro and uses only a part of the sensor for the 720p-Video – why can’t it move the used part of the sensor depending on the movements of the iPhone 4?!!
It is absolutely inpractical to record videos without stabilization, only if you use some kind of physical stabilization. That is why I use the video-recording function extremely seldom.

I am just sad, that the stabilization is not offered for iPhone 4, but I guess it has to do with the used sensor – I think the section of the sensor used for filming is fixed by hardware. So it need’s a new chip that where the section of the sensor for video can be moved while filming.

And the Samsung Galaxy SII camera is even so bad, it has no “Tap to Exposure” – and while filming you cannot even “Tap to Focus”. The problem with Samsung is, they have absolutely no love for detail … :-/

  11. screen is to large on the samsung. to get the same battery life a larger battery is needed on the samsung so charging time is also longer. Removable battery is not a plus to me. others can get the GS2 if they want I’ll stay with the Iphone.

  12. Sg2 pwns Iphone

Do you guys know that Sg2 have won awards for the best mobile, and it owns iphone? And Albert, its the sg2 thats like a ferrari, because it faster, and much better, you guys cant just say “Iphone is better than sg2.” BECAUSE IT NOT -.- Learn something
