How to root the Nook Color running v1.41 OS (SD Card Method) and install Google Apps

This tutorial will show you how to gain root access on the Nook Color if it has been updated to v1.41.  The same procedure should also work for almost any version of the OS on the device.

I. Before You Begin

1. This is a Windows-based procedure and you will need a Windows PC.

2.  You will need a microSD card with more than 50MB capacity; since microSD cards are usually available in 2GB and more denominations, you could try with anything above 2GB.

3.  The microSD card you use will have to be formatted.  So be sure to back up any data you feel is important on to your PC and then format it.

4.  You will need to download these files: Boot Image Files | Root and Google Apps Zip | Windows Disk Imager

II.  Preparing the SD card

1.  Format the microSD card using a card reader or using the Nook Color itself via the USB Mass Storage Mode.  To do this, right-click on the drive letter corresponding to the card, and click on format as shown in the picture below.

2.  Extract the Windows Disk Imager files you downloaded above to a folder on your desktop.

4.  Run Win32DiskImager.exe after confirming that your microSD card has been recognized as a drive on your Windows PC.

5.  For the Image File field, click on the Browse icon next to the field, navigate to the folder on your desktop and select cwm_sd_flashing_boot.img.

6.  Select the appropriate drive letter of your microSD card in the Device section and click on Write.  Click Yes on the confirm dialog box that pops up on doing this.  This will create a bootable microSD card which already contains the necessary files to boot directly to ClockworkMod Recovery when the Nook Color is restarted.  These are:

If you don’t find these files already on the microSD card, extract the Boot Image Files you downloaded above to the topmost folder in the card (not within any folder).

7.  Copy and paste the Gapps_and_root.zip file you downloaded also to the topmost folder of the microSD card.

8.  Remove the microSD from the card reader if you have used one and insert it into the Nook Color.  If you have used the USB Storage Mode on the Nook Color to mount the card on Windows, just restart the device.

III.  Rooting the Nook Color.

1.  Restart the device.

2.  If the above steps went without a hitch, the tablet should now boot directly to ClockworkMod Recovery.

3.  On the ClockWorkMod menu, select ‘Install a zip from the SD card’.

4.  Next, select ‘Choose a zip from the SD’.

5.  Select Gapps_and_root.zip from the list

6.  Select Yes to install on the next screen.

7.  Once the process is done, power down the Nook Color and remove the microSD card.

8.  Reboot the Nook Color.

Your Nook Color should now be rooted and have the Google Apps bundle installed!
