How to root the MetroPCS Samsung Admire (SCH-R720) (UPDATED 07.06.12)

This tutorial helps you get root on the MetroPCS version of the Samsung Admire.  The whole process is pretty easy as it is a One-Click Root solution, but you’ll have the Comments section to use below if you run into problems.

I.  Before You Begin

1.  These instructions are based on a rooting method using a Windows-based PC, so make sure you have a Windows PC.

2.  Back up your data – this isn’t strictly needed in this case but you never know.

3.  Download and install Samsung Drivers.

4.  Enable USB Debugging on the Samsung Admire.  To do this, head to Settings -> Applications -> Development and check the box next to Enable USB Debugging.

II.  Rooting the Device

1.  Download the One-Click Root zip file.

2.  Connect your device and make sure USB Debugging is enabled once more.

3.  Extract the downloaded zip file to folder on your desktop.

4.  Navigate to the unzipped folder and double-click run.bat.

5.  Once the process is complete, reboot the device.

You should now find the Superuser app installed on your device, signifying that you now have root.  If you don’t have Superuser, try installing this from the Market to check if you have root but not the Superuser app.  If that fails too, repeat the whole process once again.  Many users have reported the same process working on the second or third try, so keep at it – just remember to enable USB debugging before you do so.

  1. I install the samsung drivers and I ran the run.bat and I got this message
    * daemon not running. starting it now *
    * daemon started successfully *
    error: unknown host service
    “[*] Triggering core dump…”
    [1] Segmentation fault app_process /dev…
“[*] Rebooting phone. It may buzz a lot and loop on boot. Don’t panic.”

    few seconds,”
“[*] and you’ll be finished rooting your phone. Reboot and enjoy.”

Error: Could not access the Package Manager. Is the system running?
“[*] Persistence complete, enjoy your rooted phone!”
Press any key to exit the script.
Press any key to continue . . .

Then I used root checker on my phone and it said phone not rooted. So what do I do?

  2. Nico, I just went through the same thing and got the exact same messages. I had to run it twice and then root checker verified I did have root access. In order to remove the unwanted applications however, do not follow the instructions on the linked page at the bottom. Instead, download a shell program which will allow you to access the linux prompt directly. Once there, type “su” and you will have root access to do as you please and remove whatever you want. Good luck.

  3. Hey ran this and it totally destroyed the phone. Boots through the Metro song, then leaves “SAMSUNG” on the screen, locks up and buzz a lot but after over an hour still nothing.

    How do I recover?

    1. I got the same thing. I had to reset my phone. I lost all my data but at least I have my phone now. We were about to return it until I figured out that

      1. How did you do the reset? My samsung admire has locked itself further by requiring my google email&pword, which I dont remember since I havent used the gmail login in over a year.

          1. Hi,

Unfortunately, with 2 million people hitting this site every month it’s hard for us to get to every comment. We have a contact us form at the bottom of the site for you to report issues about procedures (that we DEFINITELY get) so next time instead of posting here, use that form or the contact us in the menu bar.

            Thanks for your feedback.

          2. As for the file being broken, the writer of this story accidentally linked to the app from the developer directly, he should have linked to the OP of the forum post. I just fixed it, sorry everyone for the issues, should work now.

  4. When you inspect the run.bat file the directive word “device” is misspelled as “defice” so this is why it blows. There is a recovery at reboot, using the three buttons of “Volume Down” + “Return” + “Power Off”. I had to boot to this, correct the run.bat script and then execute the run.bat from the safe mode to finish the install process and recover.

Now I need to know how to check to make sure the phone is “rooted”.

    Thanks!

  5. So I just tried this and it just has a link that says “run” not “run.bat”. I figured it was the same thing so I clicked on it and a black box popped up with a whole bunch of writing, at the bottom it said to push any key to continue, so I did. I downloaded the Superuser but there is nothing showing up. It says no apps in list. I’m guessing I didn’t do this right. So if anyone could help me that would be great. I just want these metro apps off my phone. Thanks 🙂

  6. I got this:

‘adb’ is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file.

    can anyone help?

    1. that should not happen Tishebaj. Rooting procedures usually don’t affect devices that way! Did you follow the steps as listed above exactly?

  7. this does not work. I have tried it several times, the SU will not install, and will not even work if you download from Google Play
