iOS App of the Day: One Receipt

If you are like me, then you are constantly pulling crumpled receipts out of your pocket, wallet, and sometimes even from underneath your driver’s seat. I always say I am going to organize all my receipts someday, and someday just never happens. I even got the bright idea once to just snap a picture of my receipts and store all the receipt pictures in my iPhone, but that took up too much space so I went on the search for a reliable receipt app instead. That’s what led me to the One Receipt app for iOS. With One Receipt you never have to worry about losing an important receipt again. With one click of your iPhone camera you can snap a picture of the receipt and it is stored within the app forever. You can also manually enter in receipts for anything that requires additional notes.

What is cool about this app is that you have the option to sync your One Receipt account with your Google mail or Yahoo mail account. Users who choose to sync the app with their email can maximize their One Receipt experience by allowing the company to pull receipt data from any online purchases that hit your email accounts. This way One Receipt can easily track where your money is being spent and on what types of products, and in turn provide you with a monthly summary of your spending habits. Having a detailed summary each month is extremely helpful when attempting to manage your money more effectively.

Pros:

  • Photograph receipts
  • Tag Receipts
  • “Automagically” upload receipts from your synced email addresses
  • View and share receipts
  • View original receipts and related messages
  • Monthly spending summary
  • Return alerts
  • Shipping status to help track online purchases
  • One Receipt is free
Cons:
  • Would like to see a more robust manual entry form
  • Settings do not offer user customization
  • Doesn’t support older versions of iOS

How it works:

After a quick tutorial of the app’s features you will have to create an account to get started. You will have the option to link your Google mail with One Receipt, which the app calls Google Connect.  Once the sync is completed you are provided with an Open Receipt email address which you can provide to merchants instead of your personal one.

At first glance the dashboard is minimalist and clean-looking. One Receipt has 4 main icon options at the bottom of the app including:capture, enter a receipt, my receipts, and settings. Capture brings up your on board camera to take a picture of a receipt. Enter a receipt allows you to manually enter in a receipt amount, merchant information, and detailed notes under a description field. My Receipts is a running list of all the receipts you have captured. I manually entered in a receipt total from Target and once saved the record pre-populated Target’s logo which was a nice visual bonus in My Receipts. The settings option is bare boned and basically allows you to change your username/password and your syncing options.

Conclusion: One Receipt is a great option for anyone looking for a basic easy-to-use receipt tracker. You can save images of receipts with the click of your iPhone or iPad camera and entering in a receipt manually is effortless. I would have liked to see the manual form come equipped with more field options and maybe even a text editor for the description field, but for now it gets the job down. If you really want to maximize all of the features Open Receipt has to offer I highly suggest syncing your app with the email addresses you receive the most online shopping receipts. This will allow you to use Open Receipt as not only a receipt tracker, but you will also be able to view what you are spending the most money on and what type of products you are spending it on. For a free app this is a fantastic tool to help organize your life and finances.
