Android App of the Day: Dubstep Drum Pads

If you are fortunate enough to posses musical talent, a creative spirit, or just enjoy discovering fun music related apps, then the Dubstep Drum Pads app for Android should be your next Play Store download. Dark Blood Studios has created an easy-to-use app that you are sure to find slightly addictive. Beginner and professional musicians alike can lose themselves in the app treating it as either a drum machine, drum computer, or soundboard. In my case, I spent many nights as a child wishing I was professional drummer, but what I lacked was the actual talent. With Dubstep Drum Pads I actually created some sweet beats that even surprised my inner child.

Pros:

  • Drum machine
  • Drum computer
  • Soundboard
  • Melodic effect or pushed drum sound
  • Adjustable pitch
  • Easy to use interface
  • Suitable for all ages
  • Fun and addictive
  • Create your own Dubstep style sound
Cons:
  • Can’t record your creations
  • Can’t share your creation socially
How it works:
Downloading Dubstep Drum Pads from the Play Store is quick and effortless. You don’t have to create an account or provide any kind of user information, which is a welcome change. The first screen that appears is a grid of 12 yellow tiles. Each tile either provides a melodic sound effect or a pushed drum sound. Tapping on an individual tile quickly will give you that specific sound. Holding down certain tiles (with the melodic sound effects) will allow you to elongate that specific sound. After you familiarize yourself with all of the 12 sounds just add your own rhythm to create different dubstep style beats. You can also swipe through the tiles to create your own unique sound. To adjust the pitch press the menu button (butten with 3 points on any device without a menu button), then select “pitch” and press on a pad to adjust its pitch.
Conclusion:
For a basic drum pad app Dubstep Drum Pads delivers as promised. I would have liked to have seen more user options or even a settings menu to customize the look and feel of the app. Currently, the app only has 12 sounds and one color look. The biggest feature this app lacks is the option of recording your sound creations for playback or sharing. It would be cool if there was a social network share button to show off your musical genius with your friends. The ability to use this app to actually create, save and share user creations would introduce a whole new level of creative fun. Potential improvements aside, the app works smoothly with no crashes or noticeable bugs that I encountered. As a “pretend-drummer” I really enjoyed playing with the app and liked that whatever your actual ability is people of all ages can truly have fun with this app.
Update: Different color scheme and more sounds will be available in the All-in-One version app coming May 11th, 2012.
