iOS App of the Day: Camera Awesome

Sure your iPhone has a decent built-in camera app, but what if I told you that you could possibly trade your built-in camera for something better? That’s right, there is a camera app out there that is so intensely good the word “awesome” seems only right to be included in the app’s name. You guessed it, Camera Awesome for iOS is exactly what it claims to be. With this app you can access a range of different composition overlays, take fast or slow bursts of shots, and even apply a unique filters to your masterpiece. The free version of the Camera Awesome app provides plenty of camera features for photography enthusiasts and novices alike. With these options you just might get shutter happy and possibly ditch your built-in camera app for good.

  • Take in-app photos or videos
  • Image composition features: horizon, thirds, golden, trisec, square
  • Image stabilization

  • Timer or interval options
  • Add one of nine free filters

Cons:
  • Free version only comes with 9 filters
  • In-app purchase packages to unlock other features
  • App claims to have integrated Instagram sharing but I don’t see it as a sharing option
  • Can not text an image directly from app without having to save to camera roll and then texting
How it works:
Once you download Camera Awesome your home screen will act as your camera. At the bottom of the screen you can access your photography taking options by tapping on the little triangle. This pulls up your tool bar which includes the option to take a single shot, stabilize your image, use the big button to capture an image, take a slow or fast burst of images, and set a timer or an interval by seconds.
For additional features drag down the tool bar at the top of the app in the same way you would pull down iOS 5 notifications. The top tool bar is where you will find your composition overlays, preset filters (fx), and sharing options. Composition overlays help to ensure you get perfectly level photos each time. Once you’ve added a specific composition you can choose from a preset filter. This comes in handy if you love a certain filter and want it applied to all of your photos.
Thanks to SmugMug who created the Camera Awesome app, sharing is an important aspect of the user experience. Users can set up an automatic share feature, which will share your photos automatically your favorite social network sites. This is a bit tedious to set up as you will have to sign in to each social site and provide authorization for Camera Awesome to share with your outside accounts.
.
Conclusion:
Camera Awesome for iOS is a truly robust camera app that provides a wealth of features for novices and seasoned photographers alike. The interface is well designed to capture images and video quickly and with ease. Users can tap to capture, edit, enhance, and share all from the confines of the app. The free version has kept me happy for my artistic needs and this app is absolutely worth the download. Your pictures will thank you.
