Android App of the Day: Astrid Task To-Do List

Keeping your own life organized is challenging enough, but throw family members or co-workers into the mix and sometimes life can feel like a circus. Traditional to-do lists and post it notes simply don’t cut it when you are responsible for keeping yourself and other people organized. Thankfully, the Astrid Task To-Do List app for Android is perfect for organizing your life and sharing these responsibilities with others. Astrid syncs across all of your mobile devices, which makes it easy for you to access your to-do list anywhere you go regardless of what device you have with you.

Pros:

  • To-do list with a social twist
  • Fun reminders, subtasks, lists, and widgets
  • Automatic syncing across devices
  • Desktop support with Astrid.com
  • Stay organized
  • Delegate and share tasks with friends, family, or co-workers
  • Use app for trip planning, projects, and event organization
  • Remind other people to do tasks (acts like personal assistant)
  • Free

Cons:

  • Voice assistant not included in free version
  • Have to convince others to download app to share tasks
  • Can not be saved to SD card (will interfere with reminders and widgets)
  • Sync is sometimes unpredictable

How it works:

After downloading the Astrid app, you will have to create an account to get started. Your account can also be used to access the full Astrid web support if you want to manage your tasks from a desktop. The app jumps right into adding tasks as the first step. To add a task, tap on the text bar and start typing in the details for that task. Beneath the task bar is a “Who” field which syncs to your device’s contact list. Here you can delegate or share a task with anyone you have in your contact book. After you have completed the “What” and “Who” part of the task, you can continue on to fill in the “When” (due date) and give the task a priority. The color of the bar on the right side of the entry indicates the task’s urgency. As far as categorizing tasks, Astrid provides four lists including home, personal, shopping, and work. You can always add a custom list, but I wish there were more list options already programmed with this app as an added feature set.

To access your to-do lists and manage your tasks you simply have to tap on the dashboard icon (top left corner). The dashboard provides you with quick access to the following features: My Tasks, Activities, Friends, Reusable Checklists, Lists, and Quick Lists.

  • My Tasks: Allows you to manage any open tasks you have. Here you can see what you have as an active task.
  • Activity: Allows you to see the latest activity of what your friends are getting done. This is great if you have assigned tasks to either a family member, a co-worker, or a friend and want to see the status of what they have accomplished.
  • Friends: Allows you to invite friends to Astrid or link the app with your Facebook account.
  • Reusable Lists: Shows suggested featured lists created by Astrid or gives you access to lists you have saved.
  • List: Allows you to access lists by category.
  • Quick Lists: Allows you to quickly access specific lists already categorized.

Conclusion:

The Astrid Task To-Do List app is a wonderful productivity tool for anyone searching for a little extra help when it comes to organization. The app’s easy to use interface makes it simple to add tasks and organize them by due date and priority. Astrid automatically syncs with your device providing reliable calendar alerts while also allowing you to easily share tasks with your contacts. Tasks that get completed disappear from your active  to-do list after a day and tasks that are left open too long prompt a reminder to be sent. I love that the app stays relatively uncluttered and doesn’t overwhelm the user with too many filters or options. As Astrid is remarkably intuitive to use it will undoubted help you to stay on top of any to-do lists you may encounter.
