Windows Phone App of the Day: Guess The Phrase

If you love to play games and have no qualms with being the most obnoxious group of people in the room, then this is the game for you. My boyfriend’s family has gotten me totally hooked on the game Catch Phrase, and much to his chagrin, I downloaded the mobile version of this ridiculously entertaining game: Guess The Phrase, released this January by Herm’s Software Services. While this particular game is in no way related to the Hasbro Inc. trademarked version, it’s definitely just as fun (and way more portable!) Keep reading to learn more about the drinking game that’s in no way affiliated or supported by either Catch Phrase or Guess The Phrase!

Pros

  • Free!
  • User interface is quick, easy to navigate
  • Adjust game settings: timer view on/off, round duration, points needed to win, category
  • Select between three different game modes: Class, Race, and Party (Party is the best!)
  • Categories include: Entertainment, Food, Places, Sports, Science / Technology, Idioms
  • Make any boring situation really, really fun

Cons

  • No “Adult” category (included in iOS version if you “Like” them on Facebook)
  • Original version had minor glitches

How It Works

  • Download from the “Family” section of your Marketplace (That explains the lack of an “Adult” section…)
  • Open from your app list
  • Select “Menu” to edit options and choose your categories
  • In your “Options” menu, turn timer view on/off, select round duration and points needed to win, and choose game mode
  • Click your “Back” button to return to game
  • Press “Start / Stop” to begin playing
  • Hit “Next” to skip that word or, if your partner or team guesses correctly, pass to the next player
  • Don’t get caught with Guess The Phrase in your hand when the timer goes off!!

Conclusion

This is a little to the right of my typically off-color app choices, but whatever. Guess the Phrase, laughable the attempt to avoid trademark infringement on a Hasbro classic aside, is a heaping dose of genuine family fun. But, of course, I had to ruin it. My friends and I popped a fifth of Maker’s Mark on the train ride to Connecticut last month and turned this into a good old-fashioned drinking game. Get caught with Catch The Phrase in your hand when the timer goes off? You and your partner knock back a swig and start again! I hope you all have as much good, wholesome fun with this game as I do. Please remember to drink responsibly!
