Import Ban Hits Select Motorola Android Devices Today

On May 18th of this year the International Trade Commission (ITC) smacked down a ruling to ban select Motorola Android devices from import due to patent infringement. While the ruling was decided a few months ago, the decision really just became effective today as devices like the Motorola Atrix, Xoom, and the Droid 2 will be banned from import. According to the ITC ruling, Motorola directly infringed on various patents related to how it deploys its email-based meeting scheduling.

Motorola has yet to release any details on how they plan to correct the issue, but they are claiming that the ban will not affect any devices already in stock. Here’s what Motorola had to say in their own words:

“In view of the ITC exclusion order which becomes effective Wednesday with respect to the single ActiveSync patent upheld in Microsoft’s ITC-744 proceeding, Motorola has taken proactive measures to ensure that our industry-leading smartphones remain available to consumers in the U.S. We respect the value of intellectual property and expect other companies to do the same.”

Motorola could seek a resolution to the ban by disabling or altering the way the specific calendar synching feature of ActiveSync is implemented.
