How To Unroot the HTC Rezound

Done playing around with your HTC Rezound from Verizon? Ready to unroot it and get it back to stock so you can return it for warranty or maybe just to get it back to out of box state? No problem. Here’s how.

I Before You Begin

1. THIS SHOULD ONLY BE USED ON DEVICES THAT ARE S-ON, NOT S-OFF OTHERWISE YOU WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE!

To check take out the battery, wait 5 seconds, then put it back in. After that, turn it back on by holding down Volume Down and Power at the same time. Let go when you see the white screen come up. Then look at the top of that screen for “Vigor PVT SHIP S-ON RL”. If it says S-ON in there, you can continue. If it says S-OFF, then do NOT continue.

II. Relock the Bootloader

1. Download the fastboot tool from Slacker101 and save it to desktop of your computer.

2. Plug in the phone via USB cable to your computer.

3. Go to Settings > Developer Options > Make sure USB Debugging is checked ON.

4. Open the folder called tools and hold shift on your keyboard and right click in a blank area in the folder. Then select Open Command Prompt Here.

5. When the command prompt opens, type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line:

adb reboot fastboot
fastboot oem lock

III. Flash Original ROM

1. Download the latest original ROM from here:

2. Right click the .exe for the RUU and select Run as Administrator. Follow the on-screen prompts to flash the original ROM.

If this procedure helped you, feel free to donate/thank the original developer over at XDA!

  1. Thanks for a good simple tutorial. One step left out though. Under Part II, after Step 3. You have to reboot into fastboot in order for the ‘fastboot oem lock’ command to work. Otherwise, very simple to follow.

      1. is this fixed? Am I able to follow the step by step instructions exactly as stated above because I bought the phone rooted and I just want to unroot it and have never done this before. Do I have to plug the phone in after I boot in through hboot? to do the fast boot oem?? Please help as I was unaware the phone i bought was rooted and would like it to just be restored to factory settings. thank you

      2. also i went into the tools folder i downloaded onto the computer and from the computer held shift and right click on an empty area in the folder and it did not give me an open prompt only how to organize the files or to extract all files…. do i need to extract them first??

  2. Thank you for the easy instructions. Everything installed correctly and rom was successfully updated. I am able to access the bootloader and htc white screen appears during normal booting but the screen goes black if I try to access the home screen. This issue was present before the reflash but was hoping you might be able to provide some insight as to what the problem might be.

  3. Ran the fastboot.exe and nothing happens. Nothing opens up. I don’t see a folder called tools either. Please help

  4. please help when i open my command prompt up it i cant find the tools folder in command prompt i have vista so icant do the right click like the post says

  5. I have CyanogenMod 10.1.3 & want to go back to stock. I have follow the instructions & when I run the setup it says cannot continue, my phone says HBOOT is older. I have also tried the .zip file on root of SD card it does the same thing.
