How to Unroot the HTC EVO 4G

If you are tired of using custom ROMs on your smartphone and want to start everything from beginning, you should unroot your device. It will restore your device to the stock firmware with all those default apps, like Gmail, Maps, and you will have an unmodified device. Here we have a guide on how you can unroot your HTC EVO 4G smartphone, follow all the steps and you should end up with a device running on the official stock firmware. Here you go:

I. Before You Begin:

1. You should have rooted your device using the procedure given here.

2. Charge your device to have at least 60% of battery life left.

II. Downloading Required Files:

1. adb.exe (Download link’s given in the second post, hit the Show button given beneath Unrooting)

2. fastboot.exe (Download link’s given in the second post, hit the Show button given beneath Unrooting)

3. AdbWinApi.dll (Download link’s given in the second post, hit the Show button given beneath Unrooting)

4. HTC Sync (Download link’s given in the second post, hit the Show button given beneath Unrooting)

5. JRE (Download link’s given in the second post, hit the Show button given beneath Unrooting)

6. Flash Image (Download link’s given in the second post, hit the Show button given beneath Unrooting)

7. MTD Eng (Download link’s given in the second post, hit the Show button given beneath Unrooting)

8. PC36IMG (Download link’s given in the second post, hit the Show button given beneath Unrooting)

III. Unrooting the HTC EVO 4G:

1. Download and place all the files onto your Desktop.

2. Double-click the JRE file and install it on your PC.

3. Install the HTC Sync on your PC. It will install the required drivers on your PC to recognize your device.

4. Connect your device to the PC using the USB cable.

5. Extract files from the Flash Image as well as MTD Eng archives to the root folder of your device’s SD card. It is the topmost folder.

6. After the files have been extracted, change the connection type of your device to Charge only from Disk.

7. Enable USB debugging on your device by going to Menu>>Settings>>Applications>>Development>>USB debugging.

8. Disable the Fastboot on your device from Menu>>Settings>>Applications>>Fastboot, remove the checkmark.

9. Open a Command Prompt Window on your Desktop. To do that, press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard and right-click on any empty area on the screen, choose Open command window here.

10. Type in the following command into the Command Prompt Window you just opened:

adb shell

11. You should see # in the window, it means everything is okay and you can proceed further.

12. Next, type in the following commands into the Command Prompt Window one-by-one:

cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image

chmod 755 /data/flash_image

/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img

13. Reboot your device.

14. Rename the PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.67.651.3.zip file you just downloaded to PC36IMG.zip.

15. Transfer the renamed file to the root folder of your device’s SD card storage.

16. Turn OFF your device.

17. Reboot your device into the bootloader mode. To do so, while your device is turned OFF, press and hold Volume DOWN+Power buttons together.

18. You will be asked to update your device with the PC36IMG file. Hit Yes.

19. Reboot your device after it has been updated with the stock firmware.

Congrats ! You are done unrooting your HTC EVO 4G smartphone. It wasn’t that tough to unroot the device, was it?

    1. Did you rename the file to PC36IMG.zip?

      Sometimes, the Windows doesn’t show the file extension, therefore, if you rename the file to PC36IMG.zip, it’s actual name should be as PC36IMG.zip.zip. (note the double ZIP)

      Follow the tip I gave above and you should be good to go.

  1. if u get a $,type SU
    this gives super user permission
    this will change it from $ to #
    u phone will ask for SU permission, just press ok.
