How to Root the LG Optimus L9 P769

The successor of the LG Optimus L7 is already out in the market labeled as LG Optimus L9 (T-Mobile). As you would already guess, the phone runs on the Android Ice Cream Sandwich and is equipped with a dual-core processor to make things faster on the device. Shooting 1080p videos at 30fps has now been possible with the phone and with an increased amount of RAM, you wouldn’t feel any lags while watching the lovely moments of your life right on the phone. As with every carrier device, a bunch of bloatware comes preloaded and the only way to remove them is, root the device. As soon as you have gotten root access, you’ll be able to fling the bloatware away from the phone and here’s a guide that will help you root your device.

I. Before You Begin:

1. The warranty of the device will be voided once you root it.

2. You must have LG United Drivers installed on your PC.

3. This should temporarily root the device. No perm root method has been found, yet.

II. Downloading Required Files:

1. RunMe (It’s attached in the first post)

2. Root Package (Download link’s given in the first post)

III. Rooting the LG Optimus L9 P769:

1. Place both the files you downloaded to your Desktop.

2. Extract files from the Root Package archive to your Desktop. Do NOT run any file just yet.

3. Rename the RunMe_L9.txt file to RunMe_L9.bat.

4. Enable the USB debugging option on your device by going to Menu>>Settings>>Developer options>>USB debugging.

5. Connect the device to your PC using the USB cable.

6. Choose USB LG Mode as the connection type.

7. Right-click on RunMe_L9.bat file and select Run as administrator.

8. A prompt should appear on the device, choose restore my data option.

9. Once it’s done, head over to Play Store and download Busybox and Superuser app.

10. Reboot the device.

11. You’re all set!

Great! The device’s now rooted and you should be able to manage the root permissions with the Superuser app.

  1. I just want move my Lg L9 P765 downloaded phone apps to my normal 32GB class 10 sd card,, so I have to root my phone. You said its a temporary root. Can u PLZZZ tell me the differnce I’ll face for my work. (I ONLY ROOT my phone bcoz of moving my apps (phone memory is almost full),, does a Temp or Permanent Root matters in it) PLZ REPLY…

    1. I am not an expert, but I assume that temporary merely means root can be uninstalled should the need arise. It is probably the best option should problems arise.
BTW …yesterday I managed to mess something up while removing bloatware from the phone. I got logo screen and no further at reboot. Did a recovery(press vol down, power, and front middle button on phone to get to menu, used recovery option…to my surprise it was recovered and still rooted. Replace a few missing apps…and all is good again 🙂 Have fun!

  2. Hi, we All Know that root-ing our device made its guarantee gone, can we unroot the optimus L9? I mean, shits happen, and when its occur, we’ll need the guarantee back… i just bought L9 few days ago, and knows very little bout android….

  3. It is supposed to be temporary and has a unroot option…but haven’t tried that. I no expert and I found it very easy. Like I was saying below, I bricked the phone the other day, and was able to use built in phone recovery from a back up I made. It wasn’t so easy when I did that to my Motorola phone. Whether LG can tell if the phone has been rooted or not I don’t know. Personally this phone was so cheap I would just buy a unlocked one if I trashed this one.

    1. Adrain, this rooting method helped me root my L9 P769 (Black) a couple of days ago on the first try. Just follow the steps to the letter and you’ll gain root access. I added root checker app & Voodoo Root Keeper. Here’s the link my Androidian: http://androidjinn.com/how-to-root-t-mobile-lg-l9-p769.html

Now, all we need is some dedicated Devs to create a custom recovery and some JellyBean goodness. How long will we L9’ers have to wait for a custom rom?

  4. I’ve tried for hours to get my Lg optimus to root and all without success. The command line gives me error like this: “Can’t find the path specified”. Basically it sees no phone. I’ve installed lg drivers. What gives?

    1. Make sure that you’ve got the latest drivers on your PC. If the drivers aren’t up to date, update them first and then try again.

You’ll certainly have success rooting the device 🙂

    2. This is a problem from running cmd with Administrator privs. What you need to do is start a cmd prompt with Administrator privs (go to start, in search type ‘cmd’, right click run as administrator. Then you need to change directories to where runbat_l9.bat is…. (cd /d )…. now run your runbat and it will find your files.

  5. With this i can install apps in the SD Card? If not, there is anyway to install apps in the SD? The internal storage is to small 🙁

    1. After you’ve gained root access on your device, you’ll have to install an app called “Move to SD card” that will allow you to move your apps from Internal storage to SD card.

      Hope it helps!

  6. Like Mr.G. I tried for a few hours to unlck my LG Optimus L9 P769 without any success.

At first, I was getting the same error message as Mr.G. (“Can’t find the path specified”), but I solved that problem by changing some paths.

However, when the script tries to execute

    stuffadb.exe shell “su -c ‘/data/local/tmp/busybox mount -o remount,rw /system'”

    I get the error message

    /system/bin/sh: su: not found

Either su has been moved to a different location or adb doesn’t have permission to read/execute it. Would you be able to fix this problem? I tried to use the su in busybox as

    stuffadb.exe shell “su -c ‘/data/local/tmp/busybox mount -o remount,rw /system'”

and in this case I get the error message

su: must be suid to work properly

Thank you for any help or advice you can provide!

    P.S. I have LG-P769 with android 4.04, sofware version P76910g and Kernel version 3.0.21

    1. I’ve been looking into rooting my L9 for the past few days reading
everything as I am new to it. I’m guessing by everything I’ve read so
far your problem stems from you having v10g. From what I read there is
no root for that version, only for versions before “g” have roots. I
made the mistake of updating my phone when i first got it. Now I have to
      wait.

      1. Thanks Kris, I made the same mistake too. I updated the firmware before rooting the phone. I can still return the phone at no charge, but I will wait a few days to see if anybody comes up with a solution.

  7. i get to the part where it says restore data but when i press on it it says “starting restore” then it says “restore ended” did i do something wrong?

  8. I’ve been trying to root my Optimus L9 and I’ve gotten the same instructions from multiple sites… But when I try I can never get it to work.

When I run it with Admin, it skips all the steps and goes straight to “successful, going to reboot your device in 10 seconds.” It never reboots and the restore screen never comes up on my phone.

When I don’t run it with Admin, It just stays at “running…” even after I hit restore and it says “restore started” and “restore ended” on my phone. Sometimes I will go on my phone and hit the USB connection type as “lg software” (even though it is already on that) when it is “running”… it will start saying “connecting” and I will hit back. Then my phone reboots. But then the error comes up saying “mount: permission denied ”

    Please help. I don’t know what’s wrong.

    1. Same shit is happening to me. very agrevated. I am hung up with an encryption password. what the hell is it?

      1. jhayc and randomdude, we usually wouldn’t advocate using procedures for any other devices than the ones they are designed for. So no, do not try this before you do some research and see if this will actually work with your variant.

  9. I opened a command prompt and ran the .bat file, having moved everything into c drive. so far so good. the restore prompt appears onscreen. I click restore. restore starts. then screen displays “restore ended.” Phone is still locked (as checked by Root Checker). any ideas? It’s lg optimus l9 p768f

    1. Mahesh Makvana

This procedure works on the LG Optimus L9 P769 model only. And as you said you’ve the P768F model, this procedure doesn’t work on that device.

  10. Does this actually restore the hpone? Or do I still keep everything? And is this all you need to do or do you need to unlock the boot loader or something?

  11. What does it mean that the rooting is only temporary? Would you kindly explain under what conditions the P769 remains rooted, and, under what circumstances it reverts back?

    1. Hey Ross,

Perm Root means your device will remain Rooted as long as you do not turn it OFF. Once you turn it OFF and then turn it back ON, Root will be lost.

      I hope that helps you!
      Thanks!
