How to Flash a Custom Recovery on the Samsung Galaxy S3 (US Cellular)

Samsung Galaxy S3 on the US Cellular has gotten taste of both the recoveries: ClockworkMod and TWRP Recovery. Both the recoveries are great in terms of features and user-interface, the TWRP one, however, is more user-friendly and can be themed as it’s driven by XML. Our rooting guide has covered how you can install CWM Recovery on the device and now is the time to learn how you can get the TWRP Recovery on your Galaxy S3. You might want to change the recovery just because you’re sick and tired of using same recovery again and again and want something new, then this should be perfect for you. Let’s get started:

I. Before You Begin:

1. You must have rooted your device before doing this procedure. You can check out our rooting guide to root your device.

2. Make sure the battery level on your device isn’t less than 50%.

II. Downloading Required Files:

1. TWRP Recovery Image (Scroll half-way down to get the download link)

2. Terminal EmulatorQR Code (Google Play Link)

III. Installing TWRP Recovery on the Samsung Galaxy S3 (US Cellular):

1. Download and place the Recovery Image onto your Desktop.

2. Connect your device to your PC using the USB cable.

3. Transfer the Recovery Image over to the root of your SD card.

4. Once it’s transferred, unplug the device from your PC.

5. Install the Terminal Emulator app on your device using the link provided above.

6. Once installed, open it from your App Drawer.

7. Type in following command into the app:

su

8. It’ll ask you for Superuser permission, hit Grant button.

9. Now, type in following command to flash the recovery. Make sure to replace recoveryfilename.img with the actual name of the recovery image you downloaded earlier.

dd if=/sdcard/recoveryfilename.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

10. Once the recovery’s flashed, reboot your device.

11. And you’re all set!

Cheers! You’re now rocking a touch based recovery on your Galaxy S3 and this time, it’s not that boring user-interface you’re tired using of.
