iOS Evasion Jailbreak Proves a Hit with the Public, 4 Million Downloads and Counting

The recently released evasi0n iOS 6x jailbreak is winning over the hearts of the public with more than 4 million downloads since its launch on Monday. The tool is capable of jailbreaking every iOS 6 and 6.1 device on the market, which includes the iPhone 5, the iPad Mini, the fourth-generation iPad, and the fifth-generation iPod Touch. What makes this jailbreak so popular is that it is relatively easy for anyone to use compared to other iOS jailbreak tools.

According to Jay Freeman, who manages the Cydia app store for jailbreakers, the evasi0n jailbreak was used at least 800,000 times in its initial six hours. By Tuesday download numbers had soared to 1.7 million. Freeman recently tweeted that more than 4 million iOS devices have downloaded the Cydia software since evasi0n debuted.

One of the developers behind the tool, David Wang explained the success of the tool to Forbes:

“evasi0n exploits five unique bugs in Apple’s iOS code. Ultimately, the jailbreak is able to write data to the iOS kernel, the holy grail of hacking. Once you get into the kernel, no security matters any more. Then we win.”

The evasion iOS jailbreak has also received attention from Apple. The tech giant took to their online jailbreak warning page by reminding Apple owners of the potential hazards involved with jailbreaking. Apple outlining issues like instability, security vulnerabilities, shortened battery life, unreliable voice and data, disruption of services, and the inability to apply future software updates.
