How to Root the Sony Xperia Play on ICS
So you updated your Sony Xperia Play to ICS and it broke root-access? Don’t worry, you can regain the root-access on your device by simply following the steps given in the guide below. Doomlord, a recognized Android developer, has come up with a root method for the Xperia devices running on ICS and the method seems to be working fine for the Xperia Play. Once you’ve root access on your device, you’ll again be able to install root-only apps and do all tasks you used to do before with root-access. And here you go:
I. Before You Begin:
1. As you may already know, rooting your device will void its warranty. However, you can reinstate the warranty by unrooting your device if there’s any unrooting procedure available.
2. Your device must be running on Stock ICS firmware. If it’s running GB, head here.
3. This works on Windows based PCs only.
4. You should have appropriate drivers installed on your PC.
II. Downloading Required Files:
1. Root Toolkit (Download link’s given in the first post)
III. Rooting the Sony Xperia Play on ICS:
1. Place the Root Toolkit you downloaded over to your Desktop.
2. Extract files from the Toolkit archive to your Desktop.
3. Enable the USB debugging option on your device by going to Menu>>Settings>>Developer options>>USB debugging.
4. Enable the Unknown sources option as well from Menu>>Settings>>Security>>Unknown sources.
5. Connect your device to your PC using the USB cable.
6. Double-click on runme.bat file you extracted earlier to your Desktop.
7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
8. And you should be rooted now!
Congrats! Your Xperia Play is now rooted and now has Superuser app in the App Drawer for managing root permissions. You can now install root-only apps as well as a custom recovery on your device!
