How to Root the Sony Xperia Play on Gingerbread

It’s always been a dream of every Android user to root his device, but unfortunately, some have to pass their entire life without getting a root method, sigh. You don’t have to be disappointed if you own the Sony’s Xperia Play as the device’s been covered with a root method. Fortunately, the DoomLord’s toolkit just works fine to gain root access on the device and the guide below shows exactly how you can use it to root your Sony Xperia Play. Make sure you follow all the steps carefully in order to successfully root your device, so here you go:

I. Before You Begin:

1. This will void the warranty of your device. However, you can reinstate the warranty by unrooting your device if there’s any unrooting procedure available.

2. This works on Windows based PCs only.

3. Your device must be running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. If it’s running ICS, head here.

4. You should have appropriate drivers installed on your PC.

II. Downloading Required Files:

1. Root Toolkit (Download link’s available in the first post)

III. Rooting the Sony Xperia Play:

1. Download and place the Root Toolkit archive onto your Desktop.

2. Unzip files from the archive over to your Desktop.

3. Turn ON the USB debugging option on your device by heading to Menu>>Settings>>Applications>>Development>>USB debugging.

4. Now turn ON the Unknown sources option as well by heading to Menu>>Settings>>Applications>>Unknown sources.

5. Once you’re done with it, connect your device to your PC using the USB cable.

6. Double-click on RUNME.bat file you extracted from the Root Toolkit to your Desktop.

7. Follow the on-screen instructions.

8. And you should be rooted now!

Excellent! Finally, your device’s been successfully rooted and is now capable to run root-only apps.

IV. Flash a Custom Recovery Image (Optional):

1. If you would like to flash a custom recovery image in order to flash custom ROMs, head to the How To Flash a Custom Recovery Image on the Sony Xperia Play to learn how to do that.

I did everything you said. And the runme.bat file even restarted my phone, but when it came back in, it wasn’t rooted. I’ve tried it twice and nothing.

    1. same with me, during the process of runme.bat it said that most of the files couldn’t be copied because it was read only. How to fix this?

    1. Hi M’Kay,

Root lets you do a lot of things on your device. Read our other articles about rooting on our site and you’ll have an idea what root can do for you.

To see whether you’ve root or not, simply install Root Checker from the Google Play store and it’ll tell you your status.

      Thanks!
