How to Update the Samsung Xcover 2 (S7710) to Android 4.1.2

Samsung is trying out a new breed of devices that are good in functionality which can also be sturdy enough to bear the brunt of nature if required.  The Xcover 2 is one of these devices and in addition to being dust and waterproof, comes with Android 4.1 OS out of the box running on a 1GHz dual-core processor and 1GB RAM with a 4-inch display and about 4GB of storage space.  We’ll get you rooted on this device once it is in fact rooted but until then, how about updating it to to the latest official release of Jelly Bean available for it?  If you answered yes, read on to know how.

I.  Before You Begin

1.  Charge your device to 75% or more to prevent unwanted shutdowns.

2.  Back up anything you feel is important as this procedure will flash Android 4.1.2 XXAMB6 firmware on top of the JB 4.1 that came with the device.

3.  Make sure that you have the necessary drivers installed before you begin; if you haven’t already done so, installing Kies should solve the problem.

II.  Necessary Downloads

1.  S7710XXAMB6_S7710OXEAMB3_SER.zip

2.  Odin 1.85.rar

III.  Flashing the XXAMB6 Firmware

1.  Extract Odin 1.85.rar and S7710XXAMB6_S7710OXEAMB3_SER.zip to separate folders on your desktop.

2.  Put your device into Download mode.  To do this, turn off the device; hold the Volume Down, Home and Power buttons simultaneously until you see the boot screen.

3.  From the extracted folder, double-click on odin3 v1.85.exe to start Odin.

4.  Connect your device to your PC.  If your Windows PC installs drivers at this point, let it do so.  Once the drivers are installed, the ID:COM field should turn yellow, signifying that Odin has correctly identified your device.

5.  Now click on PDA, navigate to the S7710XXAMB6_S7710OXEAMB3_SER folder you extracted above and select the file with CODE in its filename to load it into the PDA field.

6.  Click on Phone and select the file with MODEM in its filename.

7.  Click on CSC and select the file with CSC in its filename.

8.  If there is a .PIT file available in the folder, click on the PIT button and load the .pit file on to Odin.  If you do select a PIT file, check the Partition tickbox under the Option section.  If not, leave only Auto Reboot and F. Time Reset checked.

9.  Click on Start.

Your device should reboot once Odin has finished doing its thing.  Once it reboots, go to Settings > About to confirm that you now have the Android 4.1.2 XXAMB6 firmware installed!
