How to Bypass the Login Screen and go directly to Start Screen in Windows 8

If you’re the only user on your Windows 8 PC, you’d like to bypass the login screen and land directly on the Start Screen. This saves you a few clicks that you’d perform on login screen, such as clicking on your username and entering password and hitting enter. Here’s how you can do that:

I. Bypassing the Login Screen and going directly to Start Screen in Windows 8:

1. Open the Run box by pressing Windows Logo+R keys together.

2. Type in netplwiz and hit ENTER.

netplwiz
Type in netplwiz and hit ENTER

3. Uncheck the box that says Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer and hit Apply.

User Accounts
Uncheck the checkbox and hit Apply

4. You’ll now be asked to enter the username and password of the account you want to be logged-in with automatically.

Automatic Sign-In
Enter your Username and Password and hit OK

5. Hit OK and you’re good to go!

Awesome! You’ve successfully enabled automatic sign-in and from now on, you won’t see the login screen but redirected to the Start Screen instead.

  1. Thanks for this! I don’t need a password on my PC and just always wanted quick access to my PC (not having to type in a security password or answer of any sort).

There is one small problem though, it worked, but lets say if you close the lid on your Laptop (which is what I’m using) or your PC goes to sleep/hibernate, it still requires you to type in your password. Is there anyway around this?

Here’s how you can do that:

      (1) Click on the Battery icon and choose More power options.

      (2) Click on Change plan settings next to the Power plan you’re currently using on your Laptop.

      (3) Click on Change advanced power settings.

      (4) Navigate to Balanced>>Require a password on wakeup and turn it OFF.

      You’re done!

Let me know if you still have any questions!

      Thanks!

      1. When I use navigate to balance, I get a yes or no option not an on or off option. I changed yes to no and rebooted but still doesn’t work. Anything else I can try. Thanks.

  2. Thanks for the tip. But I tried it, and it … didn’t work! When I go back to the “users must enter a username and password” box, in fact it is still unclicked, as if it should be working! Any suggestions for plan B? Thanks, Scott.

  3. I tried it again and it worked! Funny story: the first time I used the “search” for netplwiz to get to the User Accounts screen, it was from the unlicensed start button (just like Windows 7, pretty handy overall) downloaded from China, and it didn’t work (even though the User Accounts screen came up and let me uncheck the button). But when I used the “official” windows + R, it worked! I’m actually back to get the instructions for how to disable the password request upon wake-up. Thanks Mahesh, you don’t know how much “regular” users like me appreciate how you guys dig up the solutions to all these infuriating little problems.
