How to Root the Motorola Electrify M running Jelly Bean

So you updated your Motorola Electrify M to Jelly Bean and lost root? No problem, here’s how you can re-gain the root-access on your device. Each time a new update comes out, the developers have to find an exploit that can be used to inject SU binary files to the device and fortunately, it didn’t take too long for the developers to find an exploit on the Jelly Bean firmware for Electrify M. Here’s how you can root your Motorola Electrify M running Jelly Bean:

I. Before You Begin:

1. As you may already know, this is gonna void the warranty of your device. However, you can reinstate the warranty by unrooting your device if there’s any unrooting procedure available.

2. You must have unlocked bootloader of your device. You can unlock your bootloader by following this guide.

2. This works on Windows based PCs only.

3. You should have appropriate drivers installed on your PC.

II. Downloading Required Files:

1. Fastboot (Download link’s given in the first post)

2. TWRP Recovery Image (Download link’s given in the first post)

3. SuperSU (Download link’s available in the first post)

III. Flashing a Custom Recovery on the Motorola Electrify M running Jelly Bean:

1. Download and place all the files onto your Desktop.

2. Extract files from the Fastboot archive over to your Desktop.

3. Connect your device to your PC using the USB cable for the purpose of file transfer.

4. Copy the SuperSU file over to the root of your SD card.

5. Once the file’s been copied, unplug your device from your PC.

6. Turn OFF your device.

7. Reboot your device into Fastboot mode. To do so, simply hold down all three buttons on your device for a few seconds.

8. Select Fastboot option from the options available on your screen.

9. Now connect your device to your PC via USB cable.

10. Open a Command Prompt Window on your Desktop. To do that, simply hold down the Shift button on your keyboard and right-click on any empty area on the screen, then select Open command window here.

11. Type in following command into the Command Prompt Window you just opened:

fastboot flash recovery twrp-recovery.img

12. It should flash the custom recovery on your device.

13. Once the recovery’s been flashed, disconnect your device from your PC.

14. Turn OFF your device.

Great! The custom recovery’s been installed, now let’s see how you can root your device.

IV. Rooting the Motorola Electrify M running Jelly Bean:

1. Still your device turned OFF, press and hold all three buttons on your device.

2. Select Recovery from the options available on your screen.

3. From the Recovery menu, select install and choose the SuperSU file you copied earlier to your device.

4. It’ll flash the file on your device.

5. Once the file has been flashed, reboot your device.

6. And you’re rooted now!

Excellent! Your Electrify M has been successfully rooted on Jelly Bean and you should now be able to run any root-only app without any issues just like you used to before you updated to JB!

        1. Yes, the problem was if you typed the unlock code into notepad by hand Motorola didn’t like that. Then the links are broken in your original post (for the twrp recovery image at least – I was able to easily find the others) but if you look through the teamuscellular forums you can find the correct twrp for the motorola M. 🙂
