How to Root the Parrot ASTEROID Smart Navigation/Music Unit

The Parrot ASTEROID Smart is not a phone; instead, it is primarily a in-car navigational and entertainment unit that runs Android 2.3.6 OS.  While it’s unlikely you’ll ever find custom ROMs, rooting it will definitely expand its limited horizons and help you gain more from this device.  Read on then to know how to root the Parrot ASTEROID Smart.

I.  Before You Begin

1.  Back up everything you feel is important before you start.

2.  Charge your device to 75% or more before you begin.

II.  Necessary Downloads

Framaroot-1.5.3.apk [File attached to this post]

III.  Rooting the Parrot ASTEROID Smart

1.  Download the Framaroot-1.5.3.apk file directly to the device using WiFi or a 3G/4G dongle.  If you aren’t near a hotspot or don’t own a dongle, you could hotspot your smartphone’s internet connection and then download the file directly to the device.

2.  Use a file manager app (Astro or ES File Explorer, for example), navigate to the location of Framaroot-1.5.3.apk, and install the application.  Make sure you have enabled installation of apps from unknown sources by going to Settings > Applications and ticking the Unknown sources checkbox.

3.  Go to your app drawer and open up the Framaroot app.

4.  Click on Gimli and wait for the success popup.

5.  Reboot your device.

Once it reboots, your ASTEROID Smart should be rooted!

  1. OK in order to load ES file explorer you have to take out the Parrot SD card out of the SD card slot. This is in your parrot radio which is or should be mounted in your dash.
Then insert your SD card into a SD card reader.
Insert SD Card reader into a USB port on your computer.
download es file explorer apk MAKE SURE you DO NOT download a malcious file.
copy es file explorer.apk to the SD card
    then download framaroot 1.5.3.apk
now copy this to the SD card.
    remove SD Card from PC
insert SD card into SD Card slot on parrot asteroid smart
put the plastic tab back in over the SD slot with the SD card inside.
turn key over in ignition……now load es file explorer by going into settings> applications>manage applications
    go find es file explorer
    now load es file explorer
now go find framaroot in settings> applications>manage applications
install framaroot. Now click on gimli….boom sucess!!

Sorry to bring this thread back to life again, but having trouble rooting (no surprise there 🙂 ).

I installed Framaroot 1.9.3 and rebooted Asteroid Smart. When opening Root Explorer, it gives me some SU error, so I cannot set mount R/W. I think it’s probably something to do with rebooting. In Framaroot, I selected InstallSU, then Gimli and the successful pop up window came up asking me to reboot. Took magnetic panel off and pressed the reset button, replaced magnetic panel and powered up again.

As the magnetic panel contains the power button, when removing it, the unit powers down. Is this correct (I assume yes)? Normally, a reset button would be pressed whilst powered up. Is it different for the Asteroid Smart?

So close to installing Google Play, Calander etc. Just need to resolve why Root Explorer gives me the SU error and cannot set Mount R/W.

    Thanks for any guidance.

    Regards,
    Al
