How to Get Free Wifi Tethering on the Moto X (Video)
One of the oldest reasons people used to root their phones was to add the ability to WiFi tether (even before the device manufacturers added this ability into their devices). Now that manufacturers have added this ability though, the wifi tether apps of old are now being used with root access to get around the WiFi tethering limitations that the built-in tethering apps have applied to them. Maybe it’s the ability to use use WiFi tethering without paying extra for it? Maybe it’s the ability to change other settings with the tethering app that are a lot more advanced than the stock app? Regardless, here’s how to use a root required WiFi tethering app for the Motorola Moto X.
I. Root the Moto X
1. Head to our How To Root the Moto X (All Versions) procedure, complete it, and then return here to continue.
II. Install the Wifi Tethering App
1. Head to the developer’s homepage and under downloads on the left side download the wifi_tether_v3_3-beta2.apk and save it to your Desktop.
2. Plug in the Moto X via USB.
3. Copy the apk file over to the internal storage of your Moto X (not inside any folders, just in the top directory so it’s easier to find later).
4. Pull down the notification bar and tap the quick settings icon at the top right.
5. Tap Settings.
6. Tap Security under Personal.
7. Check Unknown Sources ON under Device Administration.
8. Open the Play Store, search for, and install ES File Explorer (or any other file browser app you prefer).
9. Open the File Explorer app and find the tethering .apk file you copied over and click it, then click Install.
III. Setup the Wifi Tethering App to Work on the Moto X
1. Open the WiFi Tethering app.
2. Tap the three dots in the top right corner then tap Settings.
3. Tap Change Device Profile
4. Select ICS/JB Wlan 0.
5. Enable Wifi Driver Reload.
6. Enable Keep Alive – Connection Checking.
7. Hit Back.
8. Tap the Wifi Symbol to begin tethering. Try to connect to it from a computer. If it works, you’re all set!
