How to Overclock the Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon)

Maybe you aren’t satisfied with the performance of your Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon)? Maybe you want to increase its performance and let it compare with other high-end phones? Either way, this guide should help you. Overclocking increases the speed of your CPU so your device can provide you with better performance and it also decreases the chance of having lags in some resource-intensive games. So here’s how you can go about overclocking your Samsung Galaxy S4 on Verizon:

I. Before You Begin:

1. You must have rooted your device before doing this procedure. Please head to our How to Root the Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon) and root your device first.

2. You must have CWM Recovery installed on your device. Refer to this guide to learn how to get it up and running on your device.

3. This should work on AOSP/TouchWIZ ROMs only.

II. Make a Backup:

1. Head over to the Google Play and get the Quick Boot app installed on your device.

2. Open the app from your App Drawer.

3. Hit Recovery option in the app and your device should reboot into the CWM Recovery mode.

4. Once in Recovery, select backup and restore followed by backup.

5. It’ll create a backup of your current system and save it to your device.

6. You’re done!

III. Downloading Required Files:

1. KT-SGS4 Kernel (Download link’s available in the first post)

IV. Flashing the Overclock Kernel on the Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon):

1. Place the Overclock Kernel zip onto your Desktop.

2. Plug in your device to your PC using the USB cable.

3. Copy the Kernel zip over to the root of your SD card.

4. Once it’s been copied, unplug your device from your PC.

5. Open the Quick Boot app from your App Drawer.

6. Hit the Recovery option and you’ll reboot into the Recovery mode.

7. Once there, select install zip from sdcard followed by choose zip from sdcard.

8. Choose the Kernel zip to be flashed on your device and it’ll immediately begin flashing it on your device.

9. Once it’s been flashed, reboot your device.

10. You’re done!

V. Overclocking the Samsung Galaxy S4 (Verizon):

1. Head over to the Google Play and download and install any of these apps. You don’t need all of these apps, just pick any one:

SetCPU

AnTuTu CPU Master

2. Once you’ve installed the app on your device, launch it from your App Drawer.

3. Using options available in the app, increase the max clock speed a bit and see if your device’s stable. Keep doing it as long as your device doesn’t go haywire.

4. Make sure not to choose save on boot option in the app.

5. Once you’ve reached a certain clock speed and you think it’s good for you, close down the app.

6. You’re all done!

Excellent! Your device’s been successfully overclocked and it’s now running at a higher clock speed than it was before!

VI. Reverting Back to Stock Kernel (Optional):

1. Launch the Quick Boot app from your App Drawer.

2. Hit the Recovery option and wait till your device boots into the CWM Recovery mode.

3. Once in Recovery, select backup and restore followed by restore.

4. Choose the most recent backup you have there and it’ll start restoring it on your device.

5. Once the backup’s been restored, reboot your device.

6. You’re all done!

Great! You’re now back to the stock kernel that you had before you overclocked your device and you aren’t overclocked anymore!
