How to Flash a Custom Recovery on the HTC Desire 500 (Dual SIM version)

Sometimes, it’s necessary to have a custom recovery already installed for a root procedure to work and in the case of HTC Desire 500, this holds true.  This device featuring a 4.3inch display, quad-core 1.2GHz CPU with 1GB RAM can definitely be improved upon and rooting and taking full control of the device is a good way to go.  The guide below should help you get past the installing custom recovery part, and we’ll show you how to root it in another detailed guide.

I.  Before You Begin

1.  Install the necessary drivers before you begin.  Usually, having HTC Sync installed should take care of this.

2.  This procedure will only work on the HTC Desire 500 (dual SIM version) that is bootloader unlocked.  Head over to htcdev.com to get your bootloader unlocked.

3.  Back up eveything y0u feel is important before you begin.

4.  Charge your device to 75% or more to prevent unwanted shutdowns during the procedure.

II.  Necessary Downloads

1.   CWMRecovery_D500_Philz.img [Download link available in this post]

2.  adb-fastboot.zip

III.  Installing Custom Recovery on the Desire 500

1.  Extract adb-fastboot.zip to a folder on your desktop.

2.  Copy CWMRecovery_D500_Philz.img to the extracted folder.

3.  Power down your device and boot into fastboot mode.  To enter fastboot mode, remove the battery and put it back in; then, press and hold the Volume Down + Power keys until your device enters fastboot mode.

4.  Connect your device to your PC.  If there are any drivers being installed this point, let them do so before continuing.

5.  Hold shift and right-click on the extracted adb-fastboot folder and then click on ‘Open command window here‘ to open up a command prompt window.

6.  Run the following commands [ignore the text in the brackets as it is for information purposes only]:

fastboot devices {displays your device’s ID as a string of alphanumeric characters, signifying that your device is recognized and ready}

fastboot flash recovery CWMRecovery_D500_Philz.img {flashes the custom recovery to your device}

7.  Reboot your device.

You now have ClockworkMod Recovery installed on your device.  To access CWM, power off, remove/put the battery back in, press and hold the Volume Down + Power buttons, and select Recovery on the next screen.
