How to Give Your iPhone a Dark Theme in iOS 7 (Video)

Apple’s recent iOS 7 design overhaul is very bright, and the only way to darken the display without jailbreaking is by adjusting the brightness settings. Eclipse is a paid ($0.99) tweak that lets you replace iOS 7’s bright theme with a dark theme, giving apps a sleek look, while making the display less harsh on your eyes when using your iPhone in a dark environment. Eclipse also lets you change the font color within apps from white to orange, which works really well against a dark theme. It’s a very easy tweak to download and use, so give it a try!

I. Jailbreak your iPhone/iPad

To do this procedure you must be jailbroken. If you aren’t, you can head to our Jailbreak How To’s section and pick the jailbreak for your version of iOS (currently at the time of writing this is 7.0.4). Once done with that procedure and you have Cydia installed, head back here to continue.

II. Install Eclipse

1. Open Cydia.

2. Tap Search in the bottom right corner.

3. Type in Eclipse.

4. Tap on Eclipse when it shows up.

5. Tap Purchase at the top right and follow the prompts to login and purchase using your preferred method.

6. Tap Close when you’ve paid.

7. Tap Install where Purchase used to be.

8. Tap Confirm on the top right.

9. Tap Reload Springboard on the bottom.

III. Setup and Use Eclipse

1. Go to Settings.

2. Tap on Eclipse

3. Tap the Enable switch to turn Eclipse on.

  •  Darken Wallpaper switch to let the app slightly darken the wallpaper. Tap the switch to enable.
  • Enable Orange Tint changes the font color in apps from white to orange. Tap the switch to enable.
  • Darken UIViews darkens everything that is light-colored, in beta at the moment. Tap to disable.
  • Application Blacklist lets you chose which apps you don’t want to be affected by Eclipse. Tap it and select the apps.

4. Double tap your phone’s Home button to bring up your open apps, and swipe to close them all.

5. Open an app, such as Messenger to check out the darker Eclipse theme.
