20 Tips & Tricks for the LG G3 (Video)

If you’re a lucky owner of a new LG G3, this is for you. After using mine for a while, I’ve noticed a few things that might not be the most obvious on the device that could potentially make life using a G3 just a little easier. I threw all of these tips and tricks together and hit record. Here’s about twenty tips and tricks for the LG G3 that I hope will help you get more out of this already awesome device.

Lock Screen

  • Volume Down while phone is locked opens the Camera.
  • Volume Up while the phone is locked opens QMemo.
  • You can unlock the device by double tapping on the locked screen (instead of having to touch the power button on the back).
  • You can change the effect that the device uses to reveal the home screen when unlocked by going to Settings > Lock Screen > Swipe Effect.
  • Change the Lock Timer to 30 mins to avoid having to enter in your passcode every time you take out your phone (it’ll only require a pin code if it’s been locked for 30 mins, you can also do 10 mins or a lower time as well). Go to Settings > Display > Lock Screen > Tap Lock Timer and set it to the time you want.
  • You can customize what apps are on the lock screen by going to Settings > Display > Lock Screen > Shortcuts.

Home Screen and App Drawer

  • You can add or remove items from the notification shade, by scrolling all the way to the right in the quick shortcuts, tapping Edit, then checking or unchecking what items you want to be displayed.
  • You can set each home screen as a different wallpaper by going to Settings > Display > Home Screen > Wallpaper and select MultiPhoto.
  • You can use two apps at once by tapping the multitasking button > Dual Window > and dragging each app to either the top or bottom window.
  • You can have apps float on top of the screen by using QSlide and dragging them out onto the screen.
  • To get more screen real estate, you can select to hide the navigation buttons by going to Settings > Display > Home Touch Buttons > Hide Home Touch Buttons and select what apps you want to have them hide in. You can get them back by swiping up from off the bottom of the screen onto it.
  • Adjust the sorting of apps in the app drawer by tapping the three dots at the top right and then selecting either Alphabetical, Downloaded Date, or User Customized (the latter will allow you to move them around in the app drawer in the same way you can move them around on the home screens).
  • You can change the icon size in the app drawer by tapping the three dots at the top right and then selecting Show Large Icons.
  • Hide icons that you don’t need to see (um all of the AT&T apps that you’ll never use, for example) by tapping the three dots at the top right, selecting Hide/Show Apps, then checking all the ones you want hidden. You can get them back by clicking Hide/Show Apps again and then unchecking them.
  • You can make it easier to use the LG G3 with one hand by clicking on Settings > General > One-Handed Operation > and select to enable it on the lock screen, dial pad, and keyboard. It will essentially move everything to one side of the screen and you can choose left or right when using it by tapping the arrows on the screen to make it easier to reach with one hand.
  • You can change the font by going to Settings > Display > Font Style and choose one from the list or tap the Plus icon at the top right to enter the LG app marketplace and download a new one.

Miscellaneous

  • You can use Smart Cleaning once in a while to remove temporary files, downloaded items, and cached data quickly. Go to Settings > General > Smart Cleaning > then tap on each item to clear it.
  • You can enable a guest mode that limits the apps someone can use on the device without entering in a passcode by going to Settings > General > Guest Mode > Tap On at the top right. Then enable some type of unlocking action to put the person into guest mode (swipe probably is better than a pin or passcode since you want the guest to be able to use it easily). Then if you use that to unlock the device instead of your normal passcode it’ll open that mode with access to only the apps you choose. You can relock the device and then use your normal unlock code to return to your normal access mode.
  • You can setup different gestures to activate different things on the device by going to Settings > General > Gestures. Go through the list to see what gestures you can use to activate what.
  • You can use the Learn Remote option in Quick Remote to copy the commands from another remote by holding it up to the phone and pushing the command you want to copy.

      1. Unfortunately it doesn’t account for hidden icons. I would like to choose how many apps I want on each app drawer screen.
