I. Before You Begin

1. You MUST have done our How To Root the HTC Incredible (Unrevoked Method) procedure before doing this one.

II. Loading a Custom ROM

1. Head over to our HTC Incredible ROMs section and choose a ROM you want to try. Download it and save it to your computer (do NOT extract it, leave it as a .zip)

2. Plug the phone in via USB cable and mount the sd card so we can transfer files to it.

3. Copy the ROM .zip file and save it to the root of the sd card (NOT in any folders just on the sd card itself). Once it is done copying, unplug the phone from the usb cable.

4. Turn off the phone, then turn it back on by holding down Volume Down and Power until the white bootloader screen comes up (if it finds the PC36IMG.zip on your sd because you didn’t delete it, just say NO when it asks you if you want to update). Now using the volume buttons select Fastboot, then select Recovery and wait for the phone to boot into recovery mode.

5. Scroll to Wipe Data, select wipe data/factory reset and then select wipe dalvik cache.

6. Now scroll to Apply .zip from sd card and select the ROM .zip file we saved to the sdcard and wait for it to finish flashing. Once it is done, hit reboot and you are all set! Enjoy! If you want to flash a different ROM, simply redo this procedure and choose a different ROM.

I. Before You Begin

1. This is the easiest method available to root.

2. This method will also flash a custom recovery image so you can start flashing ROMs immediately.

3. On your computer, go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > and Uninstall HTC Sync if it is installed before you continue.

II. Root and Flash a Custom Recovery Image

1. Download the Unrevoked Rooting App

Unrevoked for Windows
Unrevoked for Mac
Unrevoked for Linux

2. Double click the Unrevoked program you downloaded. If using Windows, then click on the file that appears called Hboot Driver and follow it’s instructions to install the modified HBoot drivers.

3. Once the drivers are successfully installed, double click the Reflash program to open it.

4. Once the driver is successfully installed, turn off the phone by taking out the battery and putting it back in. Then push power to turn it on and get it to the normal home screen.

5. On your computer, right click the Reflash file and run as administrator. It should open Unrevoked and say “waiting for device”.

6. On your phone, click Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure USB Debugging is checked ON.

7. Plug in your phone into your computer via usb cable.

8. It should automatically locate your phone that is plugged in and you can just follow the prompts to continue.

9. Done! You are rooted and have a custom recovery image!

III. (Optional) Load a Custom ROM

1. Head over to our How To Load a Custom ROM on the HTC Incredible procedure.

I. Before You Begin

1. You MUST do our How To Root the HTC Evo 4G procedure, then come to this one to unlock NAND.

2. You would unlock your NAND to load certain custom ROMs (like Cyanogen’s).

II. Setup ADB

1. Do our How To Setup ADB procedure. Once you can see your device’s serial number at the end of the procedure, then come here to continue.

III. Perform a Nandroid Backup

1. Turn off your phone.

2. Turn it back on by holding down volume down and power until hboot mode comes up. Use the volume down button and click power to select recovery.

3. Once the phone boots into recovery scroll down using the volume down buttons to Nandroid and select it. Then select backup and wait for it to finish backing up.

4. Once it is done, select Reboot System Now and wait for the phone to boot back to the normal home screen.

III. Unlock the NAND

1. Download the following files and save them to your computer.

PC36IMG.zip
mtd-eng.zip
flash_image.zip
recovery2.img (if this downloads as recovery.img, simply rename it to recovery2.img)

2. Plug the phone into the computer via USB and mount the sd card so we can transfer files to it.

3. Unzip the mtd-eng.zip and flash_image.zip file and put their content on to the root of the sd card (not in any folders on the sd card just on the sd card itself).

4. Copy the recovery2.img file and the pc36img.zip file (do NOT extract it, leave it as a .zip) to the root of the sd card (not in any folders on the sd card just on the sd card itself).

5. Unmount the sd card on your phone. Then go to Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure USB Debugging is ON.

6. Open the command prompt on your computer by going to the start menu and typing cmd and hitting enter.

7. Type the following into the command prompt with hitting enter at the end of each line:

cd\
cd c:\AndroidSDK\tools\
adb shell
su
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img

8. Once that is done, turn off the phone.

9. Turn the phone back on by holding down Volume Down and Power until HBoot mode comes up.

10. It should automatically find the PC36IMG file and ask you to confirm. Select yes and wait for it to finish flashing.

11. When it asks you if you want to reboot select yes. (It takes a long time to load up the first time, be patient).

12. Once the phone reboots to the regular home screens, make sure it is still plugged into the computer and go back to the command prompt on your computer.

13. Type the following into the command prompt with hitting enter at the end of each line:

cd\
cd c:\AndroidSDK\tools
adb shell
su
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery2.img
reboot recovery

14. Once the phone reboots into recovery mode, navigate with the volume buttons and use power to select Wipe Data and select it.

15. Select reboot system now and you are all set! Now you can go to our procedure below and flash any Evo ROM you want.

III. (Optional) Unlock NAND to Flash Certain ROMs (Like Cyanogen ROMs)

1. Head over to our How To Unlock NAND on the HTC Evo 4G procedure.

IV. (Optional) Load a Custom ROM

Engadget has put together a little test showing the speed differences between the iPhone 4 and the Nexus One’s browsers. The first test was done with Flash enabled on the Nexus One and the second test was done with it disabled (to make it fair since, as we all know, the iPhone doesn’t support Flash). Take a look at the videos for the results.

So it seems that BBC News, gdgt, and The Onion all came out as pretty much a tie in that test, with the iPhone 4 loading Engadget a second or two quicker than the Nexus and the Nexus loading the New York Times a second or two faster.

Now that was with Flash enabled, the next video is with it disabled:

With Flash off, the Nexus One seems to load all the pages faster than the iPhone, except BBC News that seems to be a tie. So I think it is safe to say that Google did a good job with the Android 2.2 browser, no?

Samsung loves to talk about how their 1ghz Hummingbird chipset blows similar 1ghz processor chipsets out of the water (like the Snapdragon). Well, someone with a Samsung Galaxy S (running a Hummingbird chipset) and an HTC Desire (running a 1ghz Snapdragon chipset) decided to put that to the test by running Quake on both devices. Take a look at the video below for the results.

So the Hummingbird definitely wins here, looks like Samsung wasn’t kidding.
Regardless, I can’t help but wonder how having Android 2.2 on both devices would help them both even further…

UPDATE: Regardless of whether this is testing the GPUs or the processors or any other part of the chipsets, we can all agree that any phone you buy at the moment with a Snapdragon inside will perform the same in comparison to a Hummingbird inside, right?

It is missing a lot of the features we were expecting (like home screen widgets for example), but it still has all the basic necessities (and a large known bug list). If you are curious what it is going to look like, here is a video:

If you are still curious about it and are brave enough to risk your N900, as soon as some kind soul creates a simple flashable image of the OS for N900, you will most likely be able to flash the new image via our How To Hard Reset the N900 procedure (just use the new image instead of the Maemo image).

If anyone sees a flashable MeeGo image lying around, feel free to send us a link and we’ll do a how to for those who want to try it out!

Whoops.
2. This will work on all basebands up to 5.13.04 (check your baseband by going to Settings > General > About and looking for Modem Firmware).

3. In order to unlock the iPhone, you must do this procedure and then go to our next procedure called How To Unlock the iPhone on iOS 4 linked at the bottom of this procedure.

II. Download all the necessary files

1. Download iTunes 9.2 if you don’t already have it:

iTunes 9.2 (Windows 32 bit)

2. Download RedSn0w (the jailbreaking program we’ll use)

RedSn0w (Windows)
RedSn0w (Mac)

3. Download the iPhone iOS 4 firmware file

iOS 4 Firmware (iPhone 3G)

III. Jailbreak the iPhone

1. Install iTunes by double clicking the iTunes Setup file you downloaded just now.

2. Plug the iPhone in via USB cable and let it pop up in iTunes and sync it with iTunes.

3. Now, update your iPhone 3G to iOS 4 through iTunes if you haven’t already.

4. Once it is on iOS4, unzip the RedSn0w .zip file we downloaded.

5. Inside the extracted folder, right click on RedSn0w the application, and click Run As Administrator (if using XP, or Mac you can skip running as admin and just double click it).

6. In RedSn0w click Browse and search for the iOS 4 Restore file you downloaded and select it (*if the file won’t show up, see the Reported Issues at the bottom of the procedure).

7. Once it says successful, click next. On this screen check off what you want to enable (the default options are fine) and then click next.

8. Turn off your iPhone and leave it plugged in.

9. Click next in RedSn0w and it will tell you to hold certain buttons on the iPhone to get it into DFU mode. Once it is in the correct mode, RedSn0w will automatically start running. Wait for it to finish.

10. Once the phone reboots, you have a jailbroken iPhone 3G and should see Cydia listed in the apps list on the homepage.

11 (Optional). TO UNLOCK THE PHONE, continue to our next procedure: How To Unlock the iPhone 3G/3GS/4 on iOS 4

Reported Issues:

Issue: I can’t see the firmware file! It is a .zip not a .ipsw

Solution: Go to Start menu on your computer, then click on Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab > and Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
Then right click the iPhone firmware file and click on rename. Take the .zip and simply rename it to .ipsw
Then you can continue.

Ok, so there are some limitations to this that I’ll explain, but for the most part Fring’s new free IM app allows you to do video calling (over 3G, 4G, or WiFi) to any other Android phone with the Fring app installed. This is obviously perfect timing for Fring to launch this feature right before the iPhone, with it’s new Facetime video calling (only works on WiFi and only from iPhone 4 user to iPhone 4 user), launches.

There is however a catch. While it DOES work on all Android phones (just did it from a Nexus to a Droid), it is a little retarded without a front facing video camera. Basically if you don’t have a front facing video camera you are forced to turn your phone around to use the real camera for the other person to see you. The issue? Well, if you are looking at the back of the phone, you can’t see the screen and your friend’s face (and obviously if you both want your faces to appear on screen at the same time, you’d both be looking at the back of your phones and essentially have negated the whole video calling idea).

Now, there are two new Android phones that both have front facing cameras on them; the Sprint HTC Evo and the Dell Streak/Mini 5. These work just fine and here’s a video of Engadget using it on those exact phones (each person on either side of the Atlantic ocean too by the way, making this a free intercontinental video call).

As for those of us without front facing cameras, you can still use it to see each other (one at a time), and it’s great for showing the other person things that aren’t your face (i.e. projects your working on, other people, crazy people at Walmart, etc.).

Or you can grab your girlfriend’s compact mirror and put it behind the phone… just an idea. Not that that would look completely ridiculous, of course.

So when your ready, search for ‘Fring’ in the Android Market and enjoy!

So Engadget got to play with a Droid X for a bit and found out a few new things about it. Here’s a quick summary of all the new features, specs, and release information there is out right now.

Headed to Verizon (exclusively most likely)

It is slightly longer and wider than the HTC Evo from Sprint

It has a 4.3″ capacitive screen with 854×480 with a mirror trim around it

Phone is running Android (I’d say 2.2 based on the Android Helper Widget seen on the homescreen). It also apparently has a new version of Motorola’s Blur UI (the UI seems much less intrusive and more refined than we see in say the Backflip or CLIQ).

There is a Blockbuster App, DLNA app, and HDMI Out; expect Multimedia to be a main focus.

8MP Camera with Flash. Records 720P resolution video.

New Multitouch keyboard (capable simultaneously hold down two keys and it will register both, makes for faster typing) and the Swype keyboard preinstalled

1Ghz ARM processor most likely

8GBs of Internal Storage built in

Being officially announced by Verizon on June 23rd (Yes, that is one day before another certain smartphone is to be released. Coincidence? Doubtful.)

And that’s it for now, gents! So big question; Droid Incredible or Droid X?

^VIDEO COMING ASAP^

I. Before You Begin

1. This will wipe all of your data so at least sync your contacts with Google before you begin.

II. Setup ADB

1. Do our How To Setup ADB procedure until you can see a serial number for your phone while it is plugged in and you type adb devices in the command prompt then come back to this procedure.

III. Flashing an Engineering SPL and Permanent Recovery Image

1. Download the following files:

Evo Recovery Files
Engineering Image
Flash_Image
Evo Recovery Image
Evo Rooted ROM

2. Plug the phone in via USB cable, Â and mount the sd card so we can transfer files to it.

3. Copy the flash_image, the mtd-eng.img, the recovery.img, and the PC36IMG.zip (do not extract the .zip leave it as it is)Â to the root of your SD card (NOT in any folders, just on the SD card itself).

4. Once it is done transferring, unplug the phone from the computer then plug it back in. This time DO NOT MOUNT THE SD CARD. (Also make sure that USB Debugging is checked ON from the how to setup adb procedure).

5. Open the command prompt by clicking on the Start menu and typing cmd and hitting enter in the search box.

6. In the command prompt on the computer, type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line:

cd\
cd c:\AndroidSDK\tools\
adb reboot recovery

7. The phone will reboot into recovery mode. Now unzip the Evo Recovery tools .zip we downloaded earlier and look inside the folder for recovery-windows.bat. Right click it and choose Run as Administrator (for Windows XP just double click it). This should open a command prompt and then the phone should boot into a custom recovery image.

8. Select Nandroid backup and wait for it to finish backing up (we will use this later).

9. Once the backup is done, in the command prompt on the computer, type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line:

adb shell
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img

10. Once it is done, turn off the phone. Then turn it back on by holding down Volume Down and Power until the white bootloader screen comes up.

11. It should automatically find the PC36IMG.zip and ask if you want to update. Click yes and wait for it to finish updating.

12. It will then ask you if you want to reboot, click yes and wait for it to reboot.

13. Once it reboots (it should still be plugged into the computer and the command prompt should still be open on the computer), in the command prompt on the computer, type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line:

adb shell
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
reboot recovery

14. The phone should reboot into the permanent custom recovery image. Select Wipe Data /Factory Reset, then Wipe Dalvik Cache. Then select Nandroid Restore and wait for it to restore the backup we made earlier. Done! You can now load any custom ROM!

IV. Loading a Custom ROM

1. Head over to our HTC Evo ROMs section and choose a ROM you want to try.

Enjoy!

7. IF YOU EVER WANT TO FLASH A NEW ROM, NO NEED TO DO SECTIONS I – III. JUST DO SECTION IV AGAIN FOR EACH NEW ROM, THAT’S IT!

I. Before You Begin

1. The only reason to unroot a phone is if you have to send it back in for warranty purposes. Otherwise just try loading a different ROM instead…

II. Get Back to Out of Box State

1. Download HTC Sync (if you don’t already have it) and the Original RUU and save it to your computer.

HTC Sync

Original Desire RUUs (Choose the best one that suites your specific device) Thanks Jesterz @ XDA!

2. Double click the HTC Sync program and install it.

3. Plug your phone into the computer via USB cable and select HTC Sync when prompted on the phone on how it should connect.

4. Double click the RUU exe you just downloaded and follow the prompt to restore the phone back to factory settings.

This phone was graciously provided by GSM Miami! They sell all kinds of unlocked GSM phones at great prices! Click here to check them out!

Reported Issue:

Issue: After the RUU tries to reboot my phone into bootloader, it sits at Waiting for Bootloader and eventually gives me an error.

Solution: Simply unplug the phone and plug it back in (leaving it on the HTC logo screen), and run the RUU again with it in that mode already.

Issue: After the RUU says sending and updating signature, it brings up an error saying use the correct RUU for this device.

Solution: Either find a different RUU for your phone, or just put your Goldcard back into the phone and start over.

This phone was graciously provided by GSM Miami! They sell all kinds of unlocked GSM phones at great prices! Click here to check them out!

I. Before You Begin

1. You MUST have done our How To Root the HTC Desire. If you haven’t, go do it and then come back here to continue.

II. Download the ROM You Want

1. Goto our HTC Desire ROMs section on our site and choose from the ROMs there. Download the one you want and save it to your computer (do NOT extract it, leave it as a .zip).

2. Plug your phone in via USB cable and mount the sd card so we can transfer files to it.

3. Copy the ROM .zip file to the root of your sdcard (NOT in any folders just on the sd card itself).

4. Now, turn the phone off and turn it back on by holding down Volume Down and Power until the Bootloader mode comes up.

5. Using the volume buttons and power to select, navigate and choose Recovery. The phone should reboot to a ! screen. (The phone should still be plugged in to the computer right now).

6. Now, on the computer open the Desire Root folder you extracted in the How To Root the Desire procedure and double click the “‘recovery-windows.bat” file and wait for your phone to boot into a recovery menu.

7. In the recovery menu on your phone, navigate using the trackpad to Wipe and click it. Then click Wipe data/factory reset.

8. Once it is done wiping, click Volume Down to go back to the main menu and now select Flash zip from sdcard and choose the .zip file you downloaded and saved to your sd card just now.

9. Once it is done flashing, select Reboot and your all set! You are now running your custom ROM. Enjoy!

This phone was graciously provided by GSM Miami! They sell all kinds of unlocked GSM phones at great prices! Click here to check them out!

I. Before You Begin

1. This is how to root the HTC Desire, do NOT use this on any other phone!

2. This will erase all the data on your phone so please at least sync your contacts with Google before continuing.

3. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR DESIRE IS ON THIS VERSION (Bootloader version 0.75.XXXX or below AND a ROM version of 1.21.XXX.X or below)

II. Create a Goldcard

1. Do our How To Create a Goldcard procedure and create a goldcard for your phone. Once you have it created, put the goldcard into the phone and come back to this procedure and continue.

III. Flash the Rooted ROM

1. Download the Rooting Tools

Desire Rooting Tools

2. Unzip them to the C: drive on your computer (so the file path is C:\r5-desire-root\)

3. Turn off your phone and turn it back on by holding down Back and Power until you see Fastboot come up on the screen. Push the Power button while highlighting Fastboot on the phone and Fastboot should show up in red now on the phone (if it doesn’t push Power again until it does).

4. Plug the phone in via USB cable to the computer.

5. Open the folder you extracted to the C drive and double click “step1-windows.bat” and wait for it to finish.

6. Once you see the menu on the phone come back up, navigate to BOOTLOADER and push power, then navigate to RECOVERY using the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select and the phone should boot to the ! screen.

7. Now on the computer double click the “step2-windows.bat” file and wait for it to finish.

8. Now you should see a custom recovery screen, using the optical trackpad navigate to Wipe and push on the trackpad to select it. Then navigate to Wipe data/factory reset and select that.

9. Once that is done, push volume down to go back to the main menu and select Flash zip from sdcard and select the rootedupdate.zip file and wait for it to flash. All done, you have root access and can use any root required app! Enjoy!

IV. Load a Custom ROM etc (Optional)

1. Head over to our How To Load a Custom ROM on the HTC Desire procedure and continue with that to load custom ROMs and other fun stuff!

Thanks to Paul at Modaco for his awesome scripts!

Reported Issues:

Issue: My phone is SIM locked now!

Solution: Simply go to the next procedure and load a custom ROM to fix this.

This phone was graciously provided by GSM Miami! They sell all kinds of unlocked GSM phones at great prices! Click here to check them out!

I. Before You Begin

1. The only reason to unroot a phone is if you have to send it back in for warranty purposes. Otherwise just try loading a different ROM instead…

II. Get Back to Out of Box State

1. Download HTC Sync (if you don’t already have it) and the Original Legend RUU and save it to your computer.

HTC Sync
Original Legend RUU

2. Double click the HTC Sync program and install it.

3. Plug your phone into the computer via USB cable and select HTC Sync when prompted on the phone on how it should connect.

4. Double click the RUU exe you just downloaded and follow the prompt to restore the phone back to factory settings.
