If you’re a Verizon subscriber then you are well aware by now that December has not been an easy month for the nation’s largest 4G LTE carrier. Verizon users have suffered from not one, but three major network outages this month. In a recent press statement on the matter, Verizon offered no apology for the inconvenience, but simply cited “growing pains” as the cause. Interested to hear just what Big Red had to say on the matter?Continue reading for their entirely unapologetic statement below.

Statement From Verizon Wireless on 4GLTE Network

12/29/2011

In light of recent events, Verizon Wireless shared the following statement about its 4GLTE Network:

The Verizon Wireless 4GLTE Network is BY FAR the largest and the most advanced 4GLTE wireless network in the world. It is available in 190 US markets and covers more than 200 million people, providing the fastest 4G Network in the US.Being a pioneer comes with growing pains. The recent issues that affected our customers’ 4GLTE service were unforeseen despite careful, diligent planning, deployment and ongoing upgrade programs.

Problems customers experienced affected connectivity to the 4GLTE Network and data service. Several times, we have proactively “moved” 4GLTE customers onto our 3G Network to ensure all would have a data connection. For brief periods, such as on Wednesday (12/28), 4GLTE customers could not connect to the 3G Network as quickly as we would have liked.Nonetheless, we estimate that 4GLTE connectivity has been available approximately 99 percent of the time this year. Why have these issues occurred with our 4GLTE Network? Each incident has been different from a technical standpoint. Our engineers have successfully diagnosed those past triggering events, and they have not re-occurred. We also work diligently to rectify technical problems in the Network before they affect any customers.

Our 3G and 1X Networks continue to reliably process calls, texts and data for customers with 3G devices and, when necessary, 4GLTE devices. It continues to perform at the high level that established it as the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G Network.

We are taking a number of steps, working closely with our network suppliers, to ensure the integrity of our 4GLTE Network. We continue to fortify and improve its performance, and our goal is that our 4GLTE Network meets the same high standards that our 3G Network has set for performance and reliability.

Among the numerous measures we have taken or will take are: geographic segmentation, which enables us to isolate, contain and rectify network performance issues, and maintain service to the majority of customers when an issue does develop; and software fixes that we have developed, tested and applied regularly – and will continue to do so. Both will improve performance and reliability.

And finally, we are learning from these issues and applying the same gold standard to our 4GLTE Network that make our 3G Network the nation’s largest and most reliable.

Verizon Wireless is a leader and pioneer in this cutting edge technology that provides very fast wireless data speeds, enabling customers to enjoy the best experience in video and other wireless data usage. Clear unbuffered streaming video, super fast file downloads and wide availability are among the advantages we offer to customers. The capabilities of 4GLTE have exceeded many expectations.

We will not rest until our 4GLTE network performs at the very highest levels that our customers have come to expect from us.

Yet again, Verizon’s 3G and 4G data network has gone down in a rather random and irregular fashion today. Big Red users in New York City, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Portland are among those to report problems. Sadly, it didn’t seem to get better for Verizon, as users in Florida, South Carolina, Washington, and New Jersey also reported outage issues in various cities as the day wore on.

The repeat outages could stand to potentially hurt Verizon’s reputation, as users will inevitably start to question the network’s reliability. Here is what Verizon had to say about the wide spread outage today:

We are investigating reports of some customers experiencing trouble accessing the 4GLTE network. The network itself continues to operate and all customers continue to be able to make calls, send text messages and utilize data services. 3G devices are operating normally.

Let us know if today’s outage stressed you out, or if you are already back up and running in your area of the country.

At this year’s CTIA 2011, AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega announced plans to bring on a lineup of leaner, less power-intensive smartphones to its recently unveiled 4G network.

So how exactly does AT&T plan to combine a leaner design with the joy of an improved battery life? According to de la Vega, the company will incorporate a technology known as “circuit switch fallback”. This technology will use phones running on the operator’s network that use a single radio to ride along the LTE waves, then AT&T will default to a “circuit switch-based 3G” signal when out of range. If this turns out to be true, then the technology could stand to give AT&T a competitive edge over its industry rivals Verizon and Sprint.

No word on when these leaner LTE handsets are slated to make it into consumer’s hands, so for now we’re left just taking Ralph de la Vega’s word on it.

Verizon Wireless continues to expand its blazing fast LTE-based 4G network by rolling out coverage to 13 new cities on November 17. Simultaneously, it will expand the coverage in five existing markets. By the end of the entire ordeal, a grand total of 178 cities should have Verizon 4G available.

The new markets that will blaze up on November 17 include Little Rock, Arkansas; Savannah, Georgia; Cedar Rapids and Des Moines in Iowa; Lexington, Kentucky; Kansas City and Springfield in Missouri; Lincoln, Nebraska; Orange County, New York; Greater Providence, Rhode Island; Rapid City, South Dakota; Roanoke, Virginia; and Appleton, Wisconsin.

The networks in Louisville, Kentucky; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Nashville, Tennessee will also be expanded to cover a wider area.

Verizon estimates their 4G speeds to range from an average of between 5Mbps and 12Mbps on downloads and between 2 and 5Mbps on the upload. Users are informed that if they do go outside of the network, Verizon will automatically switch them back to 3G speeds.

Apple quickly put to rest any doubt that the public may have had in their recently unveiled iPhone 4S handset with [...]

Apple quickly put to rest any doubt that the public may have had in their recently unveiled iPhone 4S handset with the news that it has already reached over 1 million pre-orders in the first day. This initial pre-order rush is significantly higher than the 600,000 devices that were pre-ordered during that iPhone 4 launch.

Apple is claiming not only is this a record for the iPhone device lineup, but an all time record high for all Apple products.

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” Senior Worldwide Product Marketing VP Phil Schiller said. “The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”

All hype aside, the impressive pre-order numbers could be a result of the following factors. First, Apple has a uniquely long update process which left a huge consumer base of 3G and 3GS users that were just waiting to trade in their older models. Second, consumers have also had the entire summer to simmer their interest in the device, and Apple can now reap the benefits of having the three largest US carriers, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint to push their iPhone 4S.

Regardless of an impressive first day, the iPhone 4S still faces mixed analyst reviews- leaving only time to determine the true sucess of Apple’s latest device.

It seems like only yesterday when Apple was exclusively going steady with AT&T, and if a consumer wanted to own an iPhone they had no choice but to take AT&T as part of the package. However, once Apple opened its courtship to Verizon, and then added Sprint- it really changed the competitive playing field for AT&T.

Now that consumers have more than one option, AT&T has to work extra hard to sway consumers their way when it comes to the ever popular iPhone lineup. Their strategy with the latest iPhone 4S device is basically to toot their own horn with claims that their iPhone 4S is simply better and faster than the competitors.

With the launch of the iPhone 4S slated next Friday for all three carriers, AT&T is hoping to convince consumers that their iPhone 4S will be the fastest variant available. Primarily, AT&T reiterates that the presence of HSPA 14.4 gives the iPhone 4S a theoretical download speed ceiling of 14.4Mbps, but only if you’re on an HSPA network. Unfortunately, Verizon Wireless and Sprint both employ EV-DO 3G networks leaving only AT&T customers to enjoy speeds over HSPA that are twice as fast, (so AT&T claims).

“We can’t wait for our customers to experience the incredible new iPhone 4S on our 4G network and enjoy download speeds of up to twice as fast,” said AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega in a statement. “When you combine the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network with iPhone 4S, as well as our new pricing for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, we think we have the best iPhone line up in the industry.”

DALLAS, Oct. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — AT&T* today announced it will offer iPhone 4S on Friday, October 14. Only AT&T’s network lets your iPhone 4S download twice as fast, as well as talk and surf at the same time. iPhone 4S will be available for a suggested retail price of $199.99 for the 16GB model,$299.99 for the 32GB model, and $399.99 for the 64GB model. Customers can preorder iPhone 4S today. In addition, AT&T will offer iPhone 4 at $99.99 for a new 8GB model.

AT&T is also the only U.S. carrier to offer iPhone 3GS – now available for free online and in AT&T stores, with a two-year term commitment plus voice and data plans, while supplies last.

iPhone 4S is the most amazing iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including Apple’s dual-core A5 chip for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics; an all new camera with advanced optics; full 1080p HD resolution video recording; and Siri, an intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking. With the launch of iPhone 4S also comes the launch of iOS 5, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system with over 200 new features; and iCloud, a breakthrough set of free cloud services that work with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC to automatically and wirelessly store your content in iCloud and push it to all your devices.

“We can’t wait for our customers to experience the incredible new iPhone 4S on our 4G network and enjoy download speeds of up to twice as fast,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “When you combine the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network with iPhone 4S, as well as our new pricing for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, we think we have the best iPhone line up in the industry.”

AT&T customers can easily check upgrade eligibility and preorder by visiting www.att.com/phoneupgrade. New customers can visit www.att.com/iphone. Preorders placed online will ship directly to the customer’s home with delivery as early as October 14 – eliminating the need to ever visit a store and wait in line.

“Our past experience with iPhone has taught us that speed is the name of the game,” said de la Vega. “The faster we help our customers, the better. The faster we ship their new device, the better. And – the faster their network – even better.”

In addition to speed, AT&T iPhone customers benefit from several other key advantages:

The ability to talk and surf at the same time

Access to AT&T’s entire national Wi-Fi network** – with nearly 27,000 hotspots

Verizon switched on its 3G throttling as promised and announced it in a rather low-key fashion through an updated policy page [...]

Verizon switched on its 3G throttling as promised and announced it in a rather low-key fashion through an updated policy page on Thursday. The top five percent of 3G unlimited data subscribers will experience slower connections when on significantly congested cell sites both for what’s left of their billing period and for the following billing period. Anyone on a 4G or tiered data plan can rest assured they won’t see the effects of throttled data, for now.

Verizon is quick to point out that its data throttling policy seems relaxed compared to other carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile. For example, AT&T plans to slow down connection speeds for its top five percent users regardless of what plan they are subscribed to. T-Mobile aims to slow down any users once they exceed 5GB anytime in their billing cycle.

Big Red’s decision to start enforcing 3G data throttling comes just weeks before the highly anticipated next generation iPhone. The iPhone 5, whenever it does decide to come out of hiding, is widely expected to dramatically increase data usage for most US carriers.

Meanwhile, Sprint is the last big carrier who is still offering true unlimited data plans, and is claiming they are ready and willing to take on the iPhone 5. The Now Network is speculated to be using this strategy to lure new customers away from the otherwise big players in the wireless industry.

The Samsung/Apple patent war rages on, but this time the legal battle has made its way to France. The Korean manufacturer has filed a complaint in a district court of Paris, claiming that Apple has infringed on three of their patents. The complaint cites that the UMTS technology featured in the iPhone and the 3G iPads are in direct violation of Samsung’s patents. A spokesperson for Samsung explained,

This complaint “focuses on three technology patents, and not on the design of the tablets,” unlike the injunction involving the Samsung Galaxy 10.1, which resulted in a nationwide ban of the tablet.

The first court hearing is scheduled in December.

Apparently T-Mobile has been inundated with its data demands and may be just a few days away from making a substantial change on its 200MB Internet plans. Currently, if users go over their 200MB they experience painfully slow Internet browsing and download times due to the throttling of broadband speeds.

According to TMoNews, throttling will be soon be replaced with usage fees. For each MB used over the 200MB plan 10 cents will be added on to the user’s bill. Thankfully, T-Mobile has capped the overage fee at $30. It also looks like anyone currently on the 200MB plan will be grandfathered in, so worry-not current users.

T-Mobile has yet to confirm the overage fees rumored to roll out starting August 14th, but it seems like only a matter of time before they make the switch, and we all get closer and closer to watching our unlimited Internet options become a thing of the past.

Verizon has now joined AT&T in an under the radar effort to block hotspot tethering for users without a data plan. Rooted Android devices and jailbroken iPhone devices are now reportedly being redirected to a unique referral page when attempting to connect to a device to share its 3G or 4G connectivity. The referral page informs the user that they will need to pay an additional $20 monthly fee to gain the requested access. Users have just recently reported seeing this new page within the last day.

This move does not come as a surprise as most carriers rarely support anything that allows access to free data or extra services. In most cases, it is merely a matter of time before a carrier finds a way to limit any loopholes consumers have been using to their advantage.
