According to Android and Me, Andrew Sherrard, VP for Production Innovation at T-Mobile USA, has revealed that when the new MyTouch Slide launches that they will also release its same OS with Sense UI on top for the old MyTouch. Android and me brings up a good point, saying how if T-Mobile worked so hard on customizing Sense UI for the MyTouch Slide (Codenamed Espresso), why not port it to some of their older devices that are due for an upgrade anyway, right?

Well, if you have rooted your phone, you have probably had Espresso on your MyTouch, or G1 for a while now, but this original update will mean smoother running custom ROMs with Espresso running. And for those of you not rooted, this will mean a nice bonus to your Android 2.1 upgrade you’ve been waiting for.

  • The only problem I have with espresso are the little boxes around the icons. I’m running 2.1 sense on my g1 right now and I like my icons haha. If I can turn the boxes off I’m sold. That’s the only thing stopping me from getting the slide.

    will this update come to those of us with the original mytouch (the one without the earphone jack)?

      That is a good question actually, I would assume the 3.5mm headphone jack version is the one they are referring to here. That version has more RAM to support Sense UIs thirst for RAM, not sure if the old MyTouch’s have enough to support it (by HTC’s standards). Either way though you can root your phone using our How Tos and just load the Espresso now lol

    I think if its going to the G1 then more than likely those of us with the original MyTouch should receive it as well. Either way doesn’t matter to me i’m rooted!! 🙂

    I guess the reason i’m asking is because i cant get my mt3g rooted. It is a replacement i received a couple days ago and from what i have gathered my only option is to create a gold card. this may be a little too over my head??? Also, i’m trying to figure out what a perfected spl actually is. I had my previous phone rooted successfully and installed tons of roms but this may be over my head?

    if the mytouch 3g get the 2.1 update plus sense shouldnt the g1 get it as-well? doesnt the mytouch and the g1 have the same spec’s minus the keyboard? if so that would be great.

      The newer MyTouch (the one with the 3.5mm headphone jack) has more RAM than the old MyTouch and the G1. We are assuming the new MyTouch will get the update, but not sure if the old one will as well (if the old one does then the G1 would be a logical step). I’m thinking they won’t give the update to the old MyTouch and G1 though… we’ll see though.

    Meh i dont want the boxes. Plus the launcher doesnt look that good.

    Will this update apply to the Fender? and do i have to unroot it or can i stay on rooted fender rom?

    Jason, I also got a replacement phone and it had the *007 HBOOT, it was a pain to get rooted, but I did it with a gold card, which isn’t that difficult. But it could possibly also be done without a gold card. I can point you in the right direction if you’re interested.

    I’m in the same boat. Cant get my replacement mytouch rooted. Gold card looks a little scary for a novice like me…

    the fender is a newer 3.5mm enhanced mytouch, so yea, it will get it all the same.
    they have already said the older mytouches will get 2.1. id be amazed if they gave the enhanced 2.1 to the newer ones and a vanilla 2.1 to the older ones.
    The G1 doesnt have the same ram as the mytouch so its up in the air. But either way, neither will get 2.2 theyve already said that.

    Look, I have read about a hundred forums and the answer is no one knows or ever know if the original Mytouch will get the update. Face it, T-mobile is crap and don’t realize the potential in Android OS so they don’t care to deliver the best to their customers at all time. We should be running 2.2, and don’t give me spec issues, at least give us the opportunity to upgrade. I’m so fed up though that this weekend I will be rooting my phone with Froyo and forget depending on T-mobile (which by the way I have…got to love us poor people.)
