Gingerbread Custom ROMs are Here…

Ok, so don’t get too excited yet. They are here for some phones, but they aren’t quite usable yet. A few developers over at XDA have managed to get the new Android 2.3 OS to boot up on a few devices including the Evo, Droid Eris, and Wildfire (a small feat in itself, mind you) but the builds are far from clean. The developers actually suggest you DON’T install them until they have been updated a bit more since they really don’t function smoothly and most of the basic features don’t work.

With that being said though, this is still the fastest I’ve ever seen the developers get a new Android build booting up on a phone so trust me they are hard at work and fully functional builds are just around the corner. Soon as some more mature builds surface we’ll happily put them in our ROMs section of the site for your downloading pleasure and please feel free to send any we don’t have to us using this form and we’ll link them up there too. (Remember that in order to load these custom ROMs, you must be rooted and have a custom recovery image. You can find how to do that for your phone in our Android How To’s section.)

What’s that smell? Mmm.. Gingerbread… and possibly just in time for the holiday season. Soon as a mature batch is ready we’ll let you know!

For those adventures few (or developers that want to lend a helping hand); here are the links to the builds that aren’t quite ready if you want to take a look for yourself.

HTC Evo

HTC Droid Eris

HTC Wildfire

If you don’t want to test out the full ROM yet, how about trying out the Gingerbread keyboard instead? Works well on any Android 2.2 rooted phone. Here’s how to install it.
