How to Disable Apps on the Droid Turbo (and Which Ones Should Get the Axe)

Good thing the Droid Turbo comes with a ton of battery life, because as I’m sure you’ve noticed, it also comes with a hefty number of pre-installed apps- apps you don’t want or are unsure of what their use is, just sitting there taking up precious space. As someone who likes her new products to come fairly empty and clean- be it a phone, computer, or anything really- I find this slightly frustrating. I mean, imagine you bought one of those Ikea wardrobe-things because, presumably, you wanted to store your clothes. But when it was delivered to your house, it came already filled with a bunch of clothes that may or may not be your size or style, leaving you to wade through these items to make you room for the clothes you originally wanted to store in the first place. Annoying, right? Thus it is with the Droid Turbo. And to top it all off, you can’t delete these apps, the best you can do is disable them. Basically I’ve come to the conclusion that bloatware is the electronic equivalent of emotional baggage- and if you can’t get rid of that ish, your best bet is to keep it locked down and hidden away. So, follow the steps below to learn how to disable unwanted apps, as well as some suggestions for which ones you can disable without a second thought.

1. Tap Settings.

2. Tap “Apps.”

3. Tap where it says “Downloaded” at the top, and swipe to the right.

4. Tap “All.”

5. Tap the app you wish to disable (be careful not to disable an app necessary to the running of your phone).

6. Tap “Disable.”

7. Tap “Ok.”

There will now be a new category in the Apps settings called “Disabled.” Here you can see all the apps you’ve disabled, and easily enable them again should you suddenly decide you need, say, four different Amazon apps.

But, if you’re ready to go on an disabling spree, here are some suggestions based on my own preference and a quick poll of the Droid Turbo complaint forums:

  • Amazon
  • Amazon Appstore
  • Amazon kindle
  • Amazon music
  • Audible
  • Caller Name ID
  • Google Hindi Input
  • IMDB
  • Message+
  • NFL Mobile
  • Slacker Radio
  • Softcard
  • VZ Protect
  • VZ Navigator
  • One of the two email apps

How about you, readers? Do you agree or disagree with the above list? Got any other suggestions you’d like to add to the Island of Misfit Apps?
