Motorized Precision’s Robotic Camera Arm Is Now Half the Price

Remember that robotic camera arm you saw in MKBHD’s video? And I got to look at briefly at NAB this year? It’s insane and can do some incredible shots that a human just couldn’t. But that ability comes at a price–a hefty one.

Kira, the one he showed off costs about $250,000 to buy or is able to be rented for around $4000/day (renting is how most production companies use it because of this, of course). And the smaller one, Mia, costs about $150,000.

Recently, though, Motorized Precision announced that Mia now starts a $75,000: half the original price. And while that sounds like a lot of money still, it’s a massive price cut, and it opens the device up to a lot more filmmakers.

When I asked how they were able to cut the cost so drastically, I was told it was down to the fact that they were able to order their parts in a much larger quantity now allowing them to lower their prices.

That must have been one hell of a bulk order.

Something else that the company has in their favor is the cost of similar devices that don’t even have the same intuitive software are upwards of $500,000. When you’re on a production and given a choice of $500,000 and $75,000, I don’t think you’ll have to think too long about it.

Here are some of the projects that have used Kira/Mia, see if you can catch where they were used.

If you’re in the market to buy or rent one, you can check out more pricing info here on their site.

Now, of course, I’m not buying one any time soon (unlike MKBHD who I’m pretty sure bought one for his studio). But it’s still fascinating to me to see how technology is helping to push filmmaking techniques into doing things humans just can’t.

What do you guys think? And any of you guys want a complete walkthrough on it? 🙂
