Android Powered T-Mobile Sidekick Cometh?

Remember the Sidekick? Seems like so long ago that this phone was the top phone on T-Mobile’s network (at least in the hands of teenagers across the country). And why was it so popular? Well, for one it had all the smartphone capabilities like email, web browsing, multitasking, etc. with a user friendly interface (this was before the days of the iPhone, or even HTC “TouchFlo” on Windows Mobile for that matter). Despite it’s multiple reincarnations over the years though, it eventually died, with the last model being completely discontinued about 6 months ago.

So where did it go? Well, Danger, the company that made the software and UI for the Sidekick was purchased by Microsoft who then tried to create their own line of messaging phones to replace the Sidekick line, called the Kin. As most people know, this failed miserably and the Kin line was discontinued shortly after being launched. Ever since then things have been quiet in the Danger camp, no phones coming out, just the odd rumors here and there.

Well according to a T-Mobile spokesperson, a reincarnation is coming. The Sidekick 4G as it’s being called right now (and my guess it will be called on launch due to T-Mobile’s pattern of naming devices at the moment) is supposed to be coming out some time this year with support for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network. One big difference though between it and the Sidekick’s of yesteryear? Well it’s supposed to run on Google’s Android operating system with Danger’s UI on top.

This makes logical sense considering the range of devices running on Android nowadays, including many mid-range devices that have been selling well (we’re going to assume, for now, that the Sidekick will be a mid-range device aimed at teenagers as it was before). Add on top of that the Android OS, a fun Danger/Sidekick UI, that patented Sidekick swivel to reveal a large QWERTY keyboard, and drop it into the hands of some Disney movie stars and, well, you might have something there.
