7 Best Android Twitter Apps

Okay, so let’s just get this out of the way –the official twitter app is kind of a huge bummer. Yes, there have been many improvements to the app over the years, making it less buggy and bloated, but overall, it’s certainly not the easiest app to use. It’s certainly not the worst app out there, but I’ll bet all my pennies it’s not the best.

Luckily, if you’re an Android user, there are lots of great third-party apps to choose from, and many of them are head and shoulders above the official app. Unfortunately, Twitter knows this, and keeps trying to curb third-party developers with their token limits, making it difficult to get super popular apps once the limit has been reached. I don’t know about you, but I feel that’s rather lame, and makes me want to use a third-party app all the more just to spite them. Mwahaha.

Okay, okay, spiteful twitter vendettas aside, there are lots of great android twitter apps out there worth exploring. Whether you need major tweeting capabilities for your business, just need a smooth, easy interface for your personal use, or are interested in exploring all the bells and whistles possible with third-party twitter clients, there is an app out there for you. To help you get started on your twitter-quest, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorites.

If customization is your thing, then Tweetcaster just might be the app for you. While it may not be the best looking twitter app out there –that sickly bird mascot looks like he’s not doing so hot –there are customizations for just about everything, from search options, to fonts, to filters, and photo editing capabilities. You can even add multiple accounts. Oh, and it now supports gifs. There is a free version, if you don’t mind pop up adds, but the pro version is worth the $4.99.

Hootsuite has the goods for you social media masters out there. It lets you sync your twitter, Facebook, Google+, Foursquare, and LinkedIn and easily access them all in one place. You can switch between platforms with a single swipe, making it fairly simple to control all your accounts at once. The app also gives you stats updates, like how many clicks your tweets receive. Though it really works best if you use multiple social media sites and Hootsuite on your desktop, it’s serviceable as a stand-alone app as well.

Talon Plus

Talon’s user interface is definitely top-notch. It looks good and runs smoothly. Plus there are a decent amount of customization options –like night mode, a favorite users list, and a ‘do not disturb’ mode. Not to mention there is an built-in YouTube player and browser, plus you can see full size images. Talon also has a widget you can add to your home screen, to make navigating to the app easy from anywhere.

Plume is a pretty decent, all-around app –fairly user-intuitive with simple, obvious gesture controls. One of its best features is the ability to open multiple tabs at once, and see which tabs have unread items, making it easy to multitask. Plume also has a great tablet interface, utilizing the entire screen. The app is free with ads, however there is an ad-free version for $4.99.

Fenix

Fenix has no free option, so you’re forced to pay to play with this app. However, we recommend skipping that morning latte and spending the dough on this app; it’s worth it. Fenix is beautifully designed and looks great. As with some other apps, you can mute users and hashtags, and it has some widgets and a customizable navigation bar. Its feed can sometimes be a bit slow to load, due to the fact that Fenix shows full pictures, but that’s part of what makes it look so great, so you can’t really get too mad at it. Fenix is quickly becoming a fan favorite among twitter apps –it’s easy to use, has all the necessary tools, and is way less buggy than many others.

Carbon

Carbon looks like a million bucks. Its design is minimalist and really takes into account the space premium that exists on a phone screen. There are three little dots at the top that show you where you are currently navigating, and an icon photo of you in the bottom right corner holds shortcuts to your favorites, lists, and retweets. The black, sleek design is a welcome change from the colorful, icon-heavy, or cartoon-laden apps you usually see. Carbon lets you host multiple accounts, customize your timeline, and see your retweets and individual conversations separately. And best of all, it’s free.

Twidere

Twidere is the ultimate client when it comes to twitter customization. The app actually requires it at the get-go, asking you to set your theme, background, colors, font, as well as how information is displayed to you. Even after this initial set-up, there are a bunch of other tweaks and changes you can make to the settings. But beyond customization, the app also runs quickly and smoothly, and has a great side swipe bar for easy navigating. What’s really cool about Twidere though is that it’s open-source and totally free (and free of ads. Hip, hip, hooray!)
