How To: Gain Permanent Root and S-OFF on the T-Mobile G2 / HTC Vision

I. Before You Begin

1. An explanation of what S OFF is and why you might want it – S Off means security off for your HBoot mode (aka Bootloader). The bootloader is what allows you to flash updates and write to the file system of your phone. By turning the Security OFF, we can flash any updates/ROMs we want without the phone checking to see if it is an official update or not.

2. You MUST have done our Temporary Rooting Method before coming to this method.

II. Flash the S-OFF Hboot Image and Gain Perm Root

1. Download the rooting files:

2. Extract the files somewhere to your computer.

3. Plug your phone in via USB cable and mount the SD card so we can transfer files to it.

4. Copy the .ko and .img files from inside the extracted folder from step 2 to the root of your sd card on your phone (NOT in any folders, just on the SD card itself).

5. Unplug the phone.

6. Go to the Market on your phone and download/install Android Terminal Emulator (free).

4. Open the Terminal Emulator app and type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line (to get the touch screen keyboard to come up hit the menu button then toggle soft keyboard):

su
cd /sdcard
insmod /sdcard/wpthis.ko

*After typing the last line, you should see an error saying failed: (function not implemented). If you DO see that, you have done it correctly and can continue.

7. Now, type the following line in the terminal emulator hitting enter at the end of the line.

dd if=/sdcard/hboot-eng.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18          [the last part is mmcblk(zero)p(one)(eight)]

8. After you have typed the dd line for your specific phone, it should say something was written etc. Now, type the following into the command prompt with hitting enter at the end of each line:

sync

9. After that is done, reboot the phone. When it boots back up, turn it off and back on holding down Volume Down and Power until the HBoot screen comes up. Confirm it says S-OFF at the top. If so, you have S-OFF.

10. Now, to get permanent root, turn the phone back on to get to the normal home screen.

11. Open Visionary and Uncheck TempRoot on Boot and click Temproot Now.

12. Then select Attempt Perm Root Now and the phone should reboot.

13. Once the phone reboots, open Terminal Emulator on the phone and type su and hit enter. If you get the # symbol, you have permanent root access and S-OFF, enjoy!

IV. (Optional) Load a Custom ROM

1. Head to our How To Load a Custom ROM on the T-Mobile G2 / HTC Vision procedure.

Thanks to unforgiven512 for the original how to!

    1. did your procedure 10 times each time to step 13 (when i enter su i dont get the # symbol), dont know wht is wrong very frustrating, followed your procedure for g1 didnt have this much trouble

  1. I have to say, I have been real crazy about doing this since I got the phone. I’ve been monitoring xda, seeing if any easier way would pop up. The way you demonstrated and went through this was just plain awesome man…. Tyvm for breaking this down in noob terms, and really going through each step like you did.

    BillY

  2. since doing this permanent root with s-off, i can no longer use my wifi. does anyone have any insight on that? basically it connects then disconnects over and over and over.

    1. Hey that is what i meant lol but hey ca u please help us, i noticed people with newer g2’s including myself can’t get S off

i replied as Ansel Cortes a while ago and even sent u a message can u please help us…

  3. i got s off and when i got tothe last step to uncheck temproot and i pressed permroot now it said please temproot before agttemting permroot what do ido?

      1. ok thx.. I was making sure since i already used it prior to asking (but it worked).. do u know what would of happen if I was pre-ota using post-ota .ko?

and one more question.. is the hboot.img in the zipped file the engineering version? i have no clue what hboot.img is (SPL/phone rom unlocker like WM?).. and whats the difference between engineering version from the other versions? thx alot.. im coming for the WM/TP2 development ecosystem and know their development lingo (w/ the Android port).. im still learning the Android development ecosystem & lingo side of things.

  4. Followed it all, and rebooted (step 9). Now Im on a screen, and it says S-ON. and it wont boot either… What should I do?

  5. i do everything, and when i get to the part where i hit attempt to permroot now. and it says to temproot first. so i do that, permroot, allow it, phone reboots. try to test the root with terminal emulator by putting in su, and it says permission denied…so im obviously not rooted.

        1. Yep and I guarantee it works, now used it on 3 different G2s. Factory reset the phone (under settings) and then literally start over from the temp root procedure and immediately continue to this one then the next etc.
          Good luck!

  6. doesnt work when i go to the emulater part… his blue screen looks different than mine. mine has less spaces and this is just stupid… i miss visioary

    1. first off, don’t get frustrated. second, just start over and don’t pay too much attention to the video during the typing part, just type in exactly what it says to type in in the written section of the procedure and you’ll be fine.

  7. No problem.

    1. It would have either not worked, or froze the phone up 🙂
    2. The HBoot you flash is an engineering HBoot and just like the HardSPL with WinMo (HBoot is another name for SPL really). The only real difference between engineering HBoot and stock one is that the engineering HBoot allows you to flash unsigned software (no security check) so this allows us to flash our own firmware etc. (Think of it like the Hard SPL vs stock SPL for Windows Mobile).

    Welcome! Enjoy!

  8. I did all the steps until step 9 and when I hit the volume down and power nothing happens other than my phone settings come up for silent mode/plane and power down.

  9. i need help, after temp root should i type su in again to start the perm root? and is there a space between insmod /sdcard/wpthis.ko ? its saying not found

  12. Unlockr… there has been a new, and possibly preffered method of rooting the G2, also unlocking it in the process. Using a program called Gfree.
I really enjoy the way u break things down for us… used u the same day u posted rooting the G1. However I’ve waited a while to root G2 to make sure bugs and mistajes have been weeded out.
Anyway… is there any pros or cons using this method vs. Gfree?
Will u be doing a guide using Gfree method?
    Thank You Very Much! Sincerely.

  14. Hello,

Not familiar with GFree. I know this procedure works fine, tested it on 3 G2s personally 🙂
I’ll look into GFree though and if it’s easier I’ll post it! Thanks!

  15. I followed all the instructions successfully, now everything on the touchscreen is inverted, what do i do now??? this is crazy

  16. after i typed the dd .these show up
    2048+0 records in
    2048+0 records out
    1038576 bytes transferred in 0.097 secs (10810061 bytes/sec)

  17. hey..after i finish typing the third line..it states cannot open insmod /sdcard/wpthis.ko…i have tried several times to download the files and strat over? i have visionary plus r14….g2 with ota update…cant seem to figure it out.anyone got any clues?

  18. 1. After rooting, does HSPA+ still work?

    2. If I root without installing any new ROM, do I just get the TMO bloatware back? And, can it then be permanently uninstalled?

Great guide – thanks for it, but I didn’t see these questions answered anywhere.

  19. 1. Yes, HSPA+ isn’t affected.
    2. Rooting the phone just gives you permissions that you didn’t have, doesn’t actually change any apps etc. Easiest way to remove T-Mobile bloatware it to load a custom ROM that doesnt have it in it. Yes you can use our How To Unroot procedure to undo everything and get back to out of box state.

    Good luck!

  20. That means you are typing it wrong or the files are not in the correct place (either way means you probably missed a space or step while typing). Start over a be VERY careful when typing commands (there are spaces that might be hard to see).

  21. it looks to me like there is only two spaces.i am almost certain i am typing it correct…..but i might be putting the files in the wrong place…i have a mac…and i thought i put them straight to the sd card…they are in their own seperate files…i think they are at least….is there an easier way to move them that you or anyone else might know of?

  22. You need to make sure you got the OTA before beginning this. (Sync is just supposed to drop you to a new line, means it worked).
Go to your phone’s settings then About Phone and you need to be on Android 2.2.1. If it says 2.2 then you need to wait for the OTA before this procedure will work.

    1. on a side note, i found the wpthis-pre-OTA.ko and thought should I use that one instead of wpthis.ko posted on the video above because when I do insmod wpthis.ko, all it returned was that Format exec error

  23. so if i don’t have 2.2.1, this won’t work? i got an OTA yesterday, but my About Phone still says i’m on 2.2. also, could you give me a mirror for the download files?

  27. soo, I believe I followed this correctly, but because I just did temp root when I restart my phone before checking S=off it starts running a temp root, you didnt show yours doing so, is this proper? Should I let it run temp root then shut down then reboot holding volume down? or should I turn Temproot on boot off before starting this tutorial? (when i tried to continue, I pressed permroot and nothing happened, it didnt even tell me to run temp root first.)

  32. What are the requirements for rooting the G2? My device information is as such (as taken from using Log Collector):

    Log Collector version: 1.1.0
    Device model: T-Mobile G2
    Firmware version: 2.2
    Kernel version: 2.6.32.17-g9ab3677
    htc-kernel@and18-2 )

    Build number: FRF91

Also, which method of rooting is better/safer, VISIONary or Rage? I used VISIONary on my previously-owned MT4G with no problem, and used that method to flash three other MT4Gs belonging to friends of mine with no problem. However, after doing extensive research it seems to cause issues with rooting the G2. So, before I go ahead and root my phone, which method is best/safest?

    Thank you!

  36. jonny_ringo_wvu

Very nice explanation. Temp root went just like your video.

However, I got the exec format error in step 4.

    I’m running a Desire Z with 2.2. Should I retry with 2.2.1?

  44. Verified by me..

These steps work and I just got my G2 out of the box..

So if you are living in the U.S. .. use tmobile live in the east coast.. these steps will 100% work

    +1 to you sir.

  45. Oh no!! I’m getting stuck at step 7. It’s telling me I can’t write Permission Denied. I did the Temp Root and everything. What could be going on? Do I type the dd at the beginning?

  46. I have tried this 3 times and cannot get s-off or root to stick. I start with temproot and all the commands go through properly but when I reboot nothing. I have s-on and can only get temproot. Any ideas like I said everthing in terminal starts and ends as discribed but after reboot nothing sticks.

    1. Hey Jomaxwel – I am having the exact same problem. I have temp root and i do everything step by step through terminal. Everything seems fine but when i hboot it still says s-on?? Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

  48. Does it matter if I am running ADW Launcher? Should i go back to the stock launcher before rooting? What should the build number be? I have heard that poeple with different builds have problems.

  49. when i try cd/sdcard it says “cd?sdcard: not found”
i did all the previous steps including temp root.
    any idea whats wrong?

  50. Followed the directions to the T and now my phone no longer works i think this may have bricked my phone. i tried to even do do a factory reset and it just stays on the htc loading screen, when i tried to do a recovery reboot i get the back background with the phone in the middle and a red triangle in the middle. I know thats not a good sign. I need help ASAP please someone tell mewhat i did wrong and how to fix it.

  52. I was stuck on step 4, then I saw the comment about the 2.2.1 requirement. So I stopped and rebooted since I only have 2.2. After it rebooted, I still have superuser access and a root-only app works. I rebooted again to see if it’ll get unrooted, but the app still works. So I did step 13 above, and I did get the # symbol.

I am utterly confused. Do I have perm root and S-OFF now?? Or did I just mess up royally?

  53. when i try to do it everything works great up untill the recovery screen reboot and it always says s- on and i cant figure out why it keeps doing that. any help plz

  54. Do the guides (temporary root requirement the G2, permanently root the G2, load a custom ROM for the G2) work for firmware 1.22.531.8? I assume the guides have taken those into account, but I haven’t been able to find any reference of it in theunlockr except for doing an unroot process. I really appreciate the contributors to this site. It helped me put Cyanogen 6 onto my myTouch 3G.

  55. Ok i got my g2 yesterday and i had the g1 so rooting isnt very hard for me
Its on 2.2 i had no updates to my knowledge unless tmobile did it
1st i used the normal ko and had s-on stick instead of off.
I used pre-OTA and it gave me the error failed (exec format error)
    Now what?

    1. you da man!! did every thing in tutorial and it worked fine , until step 10 . went to temp root before home screen and then after temp root it was in visionary. uncheck temp root and hit perm root said it was going to try and then nothing.rebooted and still had s-off so everything was fine but just would not do perm root so i tried your solution and sh-bam got it to perm root. thanks!!!

  56. After rooting and charging phone while off, it boots into the Clockwork Mod Recovery screen. CM version 3.0.0.5 tried re-rooting but it still does it. tried removing CM, superuser, vision, and terminal emulator, and it still did it. Anyone else having this issue? How can I correct it?

  57. Followed the directions to the T and upon rebooting, to check for s-off, mine said s-on. Reading further down the comments section.. as far as a few months, they say you need 2.2.1? My phone came shpped with 2.2. I even manually updated and it still says 2.2.

    Suggestions?

  58. I would like the benefits of rooting my G2 (getting rid of the t-mobile installed programs that I cannot otherwise remove, tethering) but I am afraid of messing up my phone if I do it myself. Are there any dependable services that will do it right for me for a reasonable fee?

  62. Tried this on a new g2. (had a g2 for awhile and had to replace it) I have 2.2 but I must already have the OTA since I have wifi calling and tethering. Tried this process and security remains on. Any advice? should i use the wpthis-pre-ota.ko? im terrified of bricking so im asking before doing.

p.s. there should be an update note in the main post mentioning the requirement of 2.2.1 before attempting. i only realized this after reading through the comments.

  63. i have followed this to the letter and it is simply not working. I can not get the s-off. I’m so fustrated!!!!!!!

    1. Gabrielrdrgz01

did you make sure you put a space after certain commands?

      su
      cd ‘space’ /sdcard
      insmod ‘space’ /sdcard/wpthis.ko

After cd and insmod on lines two and three, there is a space before you complete the commands

  64. wow,.. Thank you very much..
This is my first time to try it and it works like magic..

    Thank you once again.

  65. Hey unlockr, any idea why this isnt working anymore? I follow your steps perfectly and everything goes smoothly, then when i hboot it says s-on. Any ideas?

    1. I have the same problem. If I don’t want to root it anymore, do I just uninstall the Visionary and that’s it? or I need to follow the steps from Unrooting video?

  66. I’m also stuck on step 4. I’ve done everything accordingly up to this part. and i just keep getting a failed (Exec format error)

  67. visionary wont even temp root i do everything like it says and i get the same as another person su permission denied

  68. im atempting root for first time after installing visonary and im entering

    su
    cd /sdcard
insmod /sdcard/wpthis.ko and when i hit enter here i get
    insmod: can’t open ‘/sdcard/wpthis.ko’

  69. Nickersonaustin2

I have followed the procedure to the T and i am still getting S-ON every time.. and i double checked to make sure i am seeing the same thing you see and I do but it still says S-ON what am i missing?

    1. i agree i have been trying this all day and i get s-on still. i did see the he enters ” su ” twice. if you watch the video closely

  70. Nickersonaustin2

If you notice in the video he types a bunch of other info after typing the dd line.. anybody know if its required for S-OFF? and if so why was it removed from the instructions

  71. TRIED 3x, doesnt work for me either. After I power down the 1st time and reboot, VISIONary+ automatically starts up.. however in the video it didnt start up? Maybe this is the issue?

  72. This is so weird i have done this so many times with my and others phones, (g2’s) but now it doesn’t want to work…… i just got this one since my last g2 messed up. did something change recently???

  73. im getting frustrated as i can not achieve the s=off step even though i have followed the instructions over and over again…i would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me :

  74. I got my S-off and Perm Root access and I can see how some people might be having difficulties with the whole process… Something that helped me out was,”When in doubt, reboot and start again.” It can be tedious but if you follow all the instructions, it should work like a box of Lucky Charms.

  75. perfect. given all the comments i was expecting a hellofa time getting it to work. much to my surprise, 1 time through the steps and . . . it worked!

      1. I just got my G2 a couple weeks ago, you think it’s the reason why I can’t root my phone? @TheUnlockR Would you confirm this? I was unable to root my phone permanently.

        1. I honestly do because i have done this procedure a lot of times successfully and now i can’t with my replacement device…. and i got mine 3-4 weeks ago…

  76. Rodriguezbranden

    I have an urgent question,
I have followed everything above and it worked like a charm, but once i reboot the system after completing the terminal commands and i try to perm root the phone, it states that i must temp root before perm rooting . I then Proceed to turn off the phone and turn it back on using the volume button and it says on the top S-Off . I then reboot the phone a second time and try perm rooting but the same issue comes up. Im tempted to just click temp root now, then click perm root but i am afraid i will just brick my phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

  77. Balaji Subramaniam

worked perfectly…. I’m a beginner.. never used andoid or any smart phones before… and your demo on rooting T-Mobile G2, I just followed point by point, screen by screen…. BANG ON TARGET!!! 🙂

    Thanks a lot!!

  78. help i do exactly what you say but in the end the s on is still there is doesnt go to s off can u help

  79. Brians Android

Works GREAT! Thanks This was way easier than rooting my G1. Thanks again.. I am tired of waiting for os updates.

  80. When it says type the dd line for your specific phone. What does that mean. I type the line verbatim or do i have to add something?

I have tried this 3 times, following the instructions to the letter. I still get s-on. Does anyone know the trick to get s-off?

  83. Pleas update Step 9 so that it says “After it boots back up, turn it
off again. Now turn it back on while holding down Volume Down and Power until the HBoot
    screen comes up.”

Otherwise it looks like you are supposed to power down the phone while hitting the volume down key, which you can’t.

  84. Okay I followed all the steps on this.
When I ‘attempt perm root’ the phone it didn’t reboot, it just had no response, but I went to the terminal and tried the ‘su’ and got the # symbol still, does that mean perm root?

  85. Hey Guys,

Do yall know why when I type “Su” it says I don’t have the permission to do so and then it won’t let me proceed?
