How To: Gain Permanent Root and S-OFF on the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G / HTC Glacier

I. Before You Begin

1. An explanation of what S OFF is and why you might want it – S Off means security off for your HBoot mode (aka Bootloader). The bootloader is what allows you to flash updates and write to the file system of your phone. By turning the Security OFF, we can flash any updates/ROMs we want without the phone checking to see if it is an official update or not.

2. You MUST have done our Temporary Rooting Method before coming to this method.

3. This ONLY works on T-Mobile MyTouch 4G’s that have gotten the OTA. You can check by going to Settings > About Phone > Firmware and your Android Version should read 2.2.1 or higher! If you are Android 2.2, either just wait for Android 2.2.1 to automatically come to your phone OR download this file save it to the root of your sd card and then turn off your phone and turn it back on holding down Volume Down and Power and then apply the update when asked. After that, you can continue with this procedure.

Thanks to Grankin01 for his rooting scripts!

II. Flash the S-OFF Hboot Image and Gain Perm Root

1. Download the rooting files from here.

2. Extract the files somewhere to your computer.

3. Plug your phone in via USB cable and mount the SD card so we can transfer files to it.

4. Copy the entire root folder from inside the extracted folder from step 2 to the root of your sd card on your phone (NOT in any folders, just on the SD card itself).

5. Unplug the phone.

6. Go to the Market on your phone and download/install Android Terminal Emulator (free).

4. Open the Terminal Emulator app and type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line (to get the touch screen keyboard to come up hit the menu button then toggle soft keyboard):

su
cd /sdcard/root
sh root.sh

5. Now, wait for it to finish.

6. After that is done, reboot the phone. When it boots back up, turn it off and back on holding down Volume Down and Power until the HBoot screen comes up. Confirm it says S-OFF at the top. If so, you have S-OFF.

10. Now, to get permanent root, turn the phone back on to get to the normal home screen.

11. Open Visionary and Uncheck TempRoot on Boot and click Temproot Now.

12. Then select Attempt Perm Root Now and the phone should reboot.

13. Once the phone reboots, open Terminal Emulator on the phone and type su and hit enter. If you get the # symbol, you have permanent root access and S-OFF, enjoy!

IV. (Optional) Load a Custom ROM

1. Head to our How To Load a Custom ROM on the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G / HTC Glacier procedure.

  1. installed the root transfered it to my phone downloaded the app enter “su” and it keeps giving me permission denied…..what do i do?

    1. Hi, I’ve gotten to this step. 4. Open the Terminal Emulator app and type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line (to get the touch screen keyboard to come up hit the menu button then toggle soft keyboard):
      su
      cd /sdcard/root
      sh root.sh
The problem is, when I type in cd/sdcard/root
I get a message that says “cd/sdcard/root” ; not found

      and that’s that.
      Any suggestions?

  4. File not found only has two possible causes.
    1. The files are in the wrong place (make sure they are in that root folder and that it is not in any other folders on the SD card).
    2. You are mistyping (spaces in the wrong places words spelled wrong etc).

So double check and be very careful to read each step.

  5. i was stuck at first too.. after u drag and drop the root folder onto ur sd card.. at step 4 do
    su
    cd /sdcard/root
    sh root.sh

make sure to put the space there.. once i did that i had no problem

  6. I did everything but it doesnot says s off. It remain on s on and try it a couple of times. made sure i type everything correctly. Same issue

  7. this is absolutely not working at all … S=on stays on ive followed it step by step and tried multiple methods someone help me please and yes i do have 2.2.1

    1. It works fine for the other 90% of people who’ve gone through and used it (its just that only people with issues ever comment).

What part goes wrong and what error do you get?

  8. I can’t even get 2.2.1. I downloaded pd151mg.zip and moved to my sdcard (where it shows as pd151mg) did the recovery thing, the recovery screen said it was extracting and updating as per pd151mg. BUT the phone still shows 2.2 under software (not 2.2.1). Anyone seen this before? Why is it not installing when it says it is or reverting to 2.2 when I turn it back on?

  10. i followed every single step & my phone does say S-OFF & inTerminal Emulator after i hit su enter it gives me a # and says terminal emulator has been granted super user permission.
how to I remove pre installed apps?

  11. Great video, they always are… I used to have a G1 and I would have never gotten rooted without you. Anyways I was wondering after I get perm root and s-off, can I uninstall the visionary app? What about after i flash a rom, do I need it to flash a rom, or after i flash? Thanks Unlockr

  12. have temproot, now, when i get to terminal emulator, i type in su, drop to next line, type in cd /sdcard/root and it tells me cd: cant root to sdcard/root. what am i doing wrong? following all steps correctly. please help.

  13. I LOVE YOU!!! NO HOMO! YOU SERIOUSLY WERE A BIG HELP. WHOEVER POSTED THAT THING ABOUT THE SPACE BEHING THE / PROPS!

  14. Can I do this if I already am perma-rooted but still have S-On? Can I just do the first part of this without doing the Visionary part at the end because my phone is already perma-rooted? I just haven’t “S-Off” yet.

  15. I followed your guide with success. Now when I try to turn on Wifi Hotspot, it shows processing for a second then quits over and over again. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it. Worked fine until I upgraded to 2.2.1 and rooted. Even tried unrooting and factory reset without success. Please help.

  19. Unlockr…love the information and videos as usual and everything is right on! I do have one question. Using MT4G, I’m able to get S-off however when I reboot and go back to Visionary, it doesn’t give me the options of “Uncheck TempRoot on Boot and click Temproot Now.”

All it gives me is “Root on boot, Run visionary.sh after root, Set system r/w after root and Root Now! Am I missing a step? Appreciate all that you do.

  20. Unlockr…as a follow up to my 1st post, I actually uninstalled visionary and removed the battery just to see if I would still have root and low and behold, I do. Superuser icon is still in my app drawer and all rooted apps working perfectly. I appreciate all the help and keep up the good work!

  21. theunlockr please I need your help I’m trying to turn off the HBOOT but still ON did step by step everithing but nothing work, is there another way to S-OFF

  22. theunlockr please I need your help I’m trying to turn off the HBOOT but still ON did step by step everithing but nothing work, is there another way to S-OFF

  23. Hi, can some one help me please. After I type comands in Term. Elemenator this is what I get:
    $ export PATH=/data/local/ bin:$PATH $su
    # cd /sdcard/root
    # sh root.sh
Inserting kernel module insmod: init_module ‘/sdcard/root/ wpx.ko’ failed (Function not implemented) Duplicating hboot 2048+0 records in 2048+0 records out 1048576 bytes transferred in 0.444 secs (2361657 bytes/sec) Synchronizing Powerdown and reboot into hboot to check if s=off

And after I reboot it shows s-on
    Any idea whats wrong?

  24. I followed the steps, step by step, and I still cannot get S-OFF. I have version 2.2.1 and still. I dont know whats wong. I even tried it multiple times. What is wrong?

  27. I am also having problems getting this to work, but I may have found out why. In the video, the phone has HBOOT-0.85.2007, where mine is HBOOT-0.86.0000. Also, the error message in the beginning of running root.sh doesn’t look like the one I get on my phone. I’m not sure, because I can’t exactly read the one on the video.

I’ll admit, I am no expert on what any of that means, but I just thought that maybe it may explain why it’s not working.

  28. I agree with Phreeq, I have the same HBOOT and I can permanent root the phone with VISIONary but no S-OFF. I’ve even tried the RAGE method with ADB, but nothing!

    Help!! 🙂

  29. I agree with Phreeq, I have the same HBOOT and I can permanent root the phone with VISIONary but no S-OFF. I’ve even tried the RAGE method with ADB, but nothing!

    Help!! 🙂

    1. nevermind …. al I needed to do was to “reboot” the phone myself than I tried the “temp root” and finally “attemp perm root” and It worked ….thanks

  30. I have done everything that was listed above exactly, but when I type in sh root.sh I keep getting “insmod: init_module ‘/sdcard/root/wpx.ko’ failed (Function not implemented)” and so when I check the Hboot, it still says I have S-ON I also made sure I had 2.2.1 also. I don’t know what to do! someone help!

  31. at step 4 when I type the
    su
    cd /sdcard/root
    sh root.sh

su switches me to superuser no problem

cd /sdcard/root says cd: can’t cd to /sdcard/root

I know there’s a space between the cd and the / command, but still I get that error. Solutions?

  32. I Did every step and it still says s-on. I am on the 2.2.1 update and have tried these steps multiple times, any ideas????

  33. i’ve got the same problem as ‘bbeny’ (5posts below). i followed the ‘temp root’ guide and that works perfectly, but when i try to do this part, i get the “function not implemented” problem he mentioned.

s is still ‘s-on’ when i check hboot. my fix is to simply leave visionary set to temp root on boot. it adds a little less than a minute to boot time, but DOES give me root access.

was there an update from t-mobile recently that we need to ‘root.sh’ file maybe?

    thanks for any replies!

  34. i was also having problems with this guide. phone came with android 2.2.1, but S was staying on. i made sure to follow everything to the letter – twice – i’ve rooted 3 other phones and i know how VERY specific these instructions are.

i finally got s-off. followed this guide: (thanks to @crrbeans for the link)

    http://briefmobile.com/how-to-permaroot-and-unlock-your-mytouch-4g/comment-page-1#comment-48683

DO NOT FOLLOW THE LINK TO THE XDA FORUMS AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE.
i spent a good hour trying that guide to no avail.

just go straight to the part where it says in bold: “Now you can follow the following 11 Simple Steps:” and follow those steps. this FINALLY got S-OFF for me. it was quick and simple. just like this guide is for most people i’m sure.

*theUnLocker – you might want to consider a second vid following the instructions from the link above. my guess is that t-mobile has closed whatever hole was being exploited when this vid was made.*

after rebooting out of hboot, opened VISIONary again, unchecked “TEMProot on boot” and hit the “attempt perm root now”. had to give it SU permision. after that, ran clockworkMOD’s rom manager and successfully backedup my current ROM (just-in-case) and loaded 2 different CYANOGENmod roms.

  35. This procedure works fine, just tested it on a MyTouch 4G. You can use the GFree procedure if you want, I didn’t want to use that because it messed with the radio etc and for most newbies that can be very dangerous (as well as make it harder to resort to stock), but if you simply can’t get this method to work, then go ahead and do the gfree procedure linked above.

    1. Is this updated mr unlockr? I have just been having trouble with the s off/on. And I never doubt you just cant get it. Thanks

    2. Patrickpollackatyahoo

greetings! =] i followed the GFree procedures and i finally got S=OFF but you mentioned that it messed with your radios… lately my service has been going in and out. sometimes i have EDGE and sometimes i have HSPA. my question is do i have these issues because of GFree method? what exactly did you mean by “messing with the radios”?
thank you hand keep up the great work. =]

    3. @TheUnlockr:disqus The new Mytouch 4G and G2’s have a different Hboot, meaning this procedure doesn’t work for all phones anymore. please reconsider doing guides or at least adding it in your guide somewhere for those who really depend on your guides.

  36. i got it with no problem but what r some cool rooted apps that i will need this is my first android phone i am a iphone user help pls….

    1. well, the first “app” you’ll want is a new ROM. there are a few here at theUnlocker, or you can search out others. i’m using – and did when i had the MT3G – CYANOGENmod roms
      http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/forum/176-htc-mytouch-4g/
i love them; there are no “stable” roms yet, but i tested out RC2 last night – after finally getting s-off – and it seems stable. huge performance boost. i’m now testing the most recent “nightly build” and thats working even better – two biggest improvements are CPU performance and battery life.

other handy programs to put on are:
      1. titanium backup
if you plan on trying out a couple of roms – which you should to find the perfect one for you – this is a MUST have. i got the pro version with my old phone, and it carried over to my new one, so its definitely worth the ~$5. it will allow you to save all you apps – and system data if you want – to your SD card for restore after loading a new rom.

      2. overclocking tool. i have not yet had a chance to get one with this phone, but with the MT3G, this kind of tool was also a must have. most with have screen on/off settings so you can OC the processor while your using the phone – resulting in even better performance – and UC -underclock- the phone when its in your pocket – improving battery life even more. on the MT3G i when from a stock usage time of about 3 hours to about 7 hours with just the OC tools.

      3. other must haves??? let see what others think.

  37. thanks for the help i was trying to upgrade to cw3 and i did it but when i was trying to us the new gingerbread it froze my screen to the bootloader and i try to restore want work what do i do now….thanks in advance

    1. hmmm. couple of things it could be. but lets move this to cyanogenmod’s site since its more about the rom/bootloader itself, and not about rooting the phone. i will post a comment on the CM7 nightlies thread listing a few things to try. my handle there is cTx.Slayer

      1. can u give me a link to get on that site i am a newbie to android if this was a iphone i would have no question P.S thanks for the help and my phone will appriecate it as well……

  38. Ok so i figured it out.. for those who already have that .86 hboot number .. this wont work off hand.. u first need to do what the other guy Aleksandor Nagy-Deak says below to gain s-off ( the floolw the 11 simple steps method). then do this whole unlockr procedure again and when u reboot to check if u have s-off ,.. u will have it and the correct hboot number- .85.2007 somthing that is in the video.. and if the permroot dont stick the first time.. permroot again and it worked .. i was trying for hours wen i tried this method.. hope it helps

    1. Hey man that first file you download out of the 11 steps how do you unzip it with out the sdk tools I know nothing about that.

      1. I DIDNT USE SDK TOOLS .. I DID IT THE OPTIONAL WAY BY UNZIPPING FILES WITH MY PHONE AND PASTING THEM IN DATA/LOCAL PLACE THEY TELL U AFTER STEP 4.. MORE STRAIGHT FORWARD IN MY OPINION

  39. Thanks a ton Aleksandor, this method worked for me where all the other ones I have tried failed…it seems that the method in this video is now outdated as it apparently does not work for the newer MT4Gs that my family all got yesterday (even though it worked for my old one that I bought a few months ago)

  40. I just did the entire procedure more than 5x. My phone came with 2.2.1, but I used the link u provided anyway… But it does not work, i cant figure out why, it continues to to say s=on and permission denied

Now I’m not a newb, but I’m not an expert either.. I really could use some help!

    Thanks

    1. Do u have .86 hboot.. if so.. look at the comment below this one (king_of_kod comment) and try that and it should work.. i had same problem

  41. Can someone help me ??i went to the link at briefmobile DOT com and is way to confusing for me, not knowing where or what the sdk tolls directory is or what programs do I need. Can someone break it down down for me like to a 4 year old ???

  42. I have also tried these steps many times but can’t get S-OFF.
I also have .86 and have tried the link to the other site and that way doesn’t even get me close to what they are saying to do.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you in advance!

    1. THAT METHOD DEFINITELY WORKS.. IF U DONT UNDERSTAND THE SDK COMMANDS.. UNDER STEP 4.. HE GIVES U OPTION TO UNZIP FILES AND PUT IT IN A SPECIFIC PART OF MEMORY CARD.. IT WORKS THEN FOLLOW REST OF GUIDE TILL U GET S OFF

  43. when u click attempt perm root is it supposed to turn off immediately?
and if so after that when i went to type in su at terminal it said permission denied

  44. FOR THOSE WHO CANT FOLLOW THE SDK COMMANDS.. THE PROCEDURE GIVES U THE OPTION OF EXTRACTING FILES AND PUTTING THEM ON A CERTAIN PART OF YOUR MEMORY CARD THAT REQUIRES A TEMP ROOT AND ROOT EXPLORER APP.. THAT BYPASSES THE SDK ADB COMMNADS AND U GO RIGHT IN TERMINAL.. THAT WAY IS MORE STRAIGHT FORWARD AND THATS HOW I DID IT

    1. Well.. Got it to work with the non-SDK directions.. But could not move the files to /data/local with a file manager but was able to with the terminal emulator.. Whatever works.

  45. I’ve tried every method I can finsmd and can’t seem to get s off for the life of me. I’ve rooted different phones in the past with no issues… really unsure of what I’m doing wrong.

  46. I’ve tried every method I can finsmd and can’t seem to get s off for the life of me. I’ve rooted different phones in the past with no issues… really unsure of what I’m doing wrong.

  47. I have done this steps every single time and it stills stay s-on there is no other way to put it off, im no expert but ive already unlock g1 and hero so… i kind of know what im doing… what is happening to my phone?… also what is the update that i need to have, and how do i verify if i have it?

  48. question. in the sentence “Optionally, you could dl the file to your phone use androzip or something like it to unzip the file and then use root explorer to move all the files to /data/local. ”

does it mean move the files on to the “/data/local ” found on the sd card or the one found on the phone?

I am having trouble locating the /data/local folder.

  49. Rainbowbright081

I keep having the problem that everytime i temp root, the su, cd /sdcard/root and sh method, i get all the same prompts im supposed to see, but when i reboot into hboot it keeps saying S=off, i can get super user status and temp root so long as i dont reboot the phone, just cant get it to perma root, could someone please help me… i do not know how to use sdk, or adb lol, big n00b here.

  57. doing this exactly as it is explained and no matter what it ends up saying s on in hboot. im stumped. did this on my g2 and it worked perfectly.

  58. Unlockr thank you so much this worked perfectly. I had bootloader 0.86.0000 & after reading some of the comments I thought this might not work for me, but it worked flawlessly. I strongly believe everyone who has bootloader 0.86.0000 & having issues might be over looking some key step in the process cuz this works

    1. Nop, I am not over looking any of the steps it just don’t work for me.
3 days I go I post here how to root Mytouch 4G and unlock a the same time in just 2 a 3 minutes and my post still not be a Approved and I don’t I understand why.
The way I found out to root will root any my touch that will help alot people.

  59. Nothing happens when i click the “Attempt permroot now”. I press on it and it acts as though nothing happened. Everything was successful until now.

    1. the temp root didnt take  some times it takes two or three times to get it to work with visionary  try a reboot use visionary  hit temproot “if its not set to temp root on boot”  it wont shut off but will show super user app after finishing  then hit perm root.   make sure you have already flashed it before doing this .

  60. Thank you! I have bootloader version 0.86 android os 2.2.1, mytouch 4g. I try this only once. This method worked for me. S-Off !!!

    1. make sure your using the right guide , the commands are case sensitive had that issue used a different guide and it worked  not sure why but they both looked identical.  when you coping and pasting into adb  make sure theres no extra spaces when you copy and it should go through quick.

Hey. I got my replacement phone. Mytouch 4g that is. I got the s=off on the phone I broke. But on this replacement phone it only let me temp root. I know I’m doing everything right cause I rooted 7 mytouch 4g. So if anybody can help me out with this issue that would be nice

  66. if TE says  “insmod: init_module ‘/sdcard/root/wpx.ko’ failed (Function not implemented)” after running sh root.sh, is the phone supposed to be s=off? i have .86 hboot so i don’t know if this works with my phone…

  67. I was able to root my mytouch 4g with android 2.2.1 after several attempts using same steps described above. Temproot was easy. On my first trial I got perm root with Su capability and S off, but I was not able to get rw permission. I repeated steps three more time and on third trial i was able to get all root functionality. Thanks DAVID……..

  68.  I cant get past the cd /sdcard/root  wont let me in root, so i copied the Root.sh and all files into the root of the sdcard, i typed cd /sdcard/  i got an ls saw Root.sh i typed sh Root.sh FAIL i tried sh root.sh FAIL

    1.  I mean Im still stuck on Temp Root.. I went on Hboot after this method and my S still ON. Any suggestions?

  69. I tried this method on my MyTouch 4g and after rebooting,  all my applications were forced to close.  After wasting about 2 hours trying to search the logs, etc.  I decided it was either a permissions or a username error.
I uninstalled Visonary, Clockwork ROM Manager and Superuser.  Then reinstalled all 3 applications.  After that I  rerooted using Visonary.  And used the Fix Permissions from Clockwork which fixed most of the problems.  It still isn’t perfect but at least it is usable for now.  I suggest before trying to root your phone with anything other then Visonary make a backup first.

  70. i got to the last step “open Terminal Emulator on the phone and type su and hit enter” and the response was “permission denied.” what do I do now?

  71. it wont let me cd/sdcard/root  it keeps saying  cd/sdcard/root not found  and i did what you said i extracted the files and put the root folder on the sdcard and nada

    1. had the same issue found out it was due to the phone still showing  hd acess even after i set it to charge only  also if you have a space of any kind in the command it will not show up.

  72. Took my time. Checked, rechecked and checked everything I was doing before committing anything.
Worked first time and run like a Italian racecar.

    MT4G running CyranogenMod 7

  73. This is the SECOND different Root method I’ve tried. I’ve been able to achieve PERM-ROOT with both methods, but I’m not longer able to boot in Recovery. It shows the Recovery, FastBoot and other options, but then it quickly runs Hboot and goes through the long process (blue progress bar on the right side) and then asks me if I want to continue update. I know those are the steps to take when Unrooting S=Off. I tried the other method like 2 times and Unrooted and then tried Rooting again, but I still was never able to get into Recovery via volume button and power button. I also would see the ! inside of triangle with the Android Animator.

Besides following each steps, word-for-word, I don’t know what it could be. Should I Reformat my SD card or something or is their an easier solution. Thanks!

Hello everyone. This is Craig Bennett II, one of your spec/ROM hunters.

I notice a few people have said the cd /sdcard/root code doesn’t work for them. When you put in this code make sure there is a space between cd and /sdcard/root. Also, make sure it is in lower case.

  75. when i type the first line “su” I get “permission denied”

any tips??  did this on my old phone without any issues….

  76. i turned my phone off and it wont come out of the opening “t-mobile mytouch 4g” screen you get at the beginning when you turn it on.

it literally stays on there forever

can i do a factory reset or will that cause further damage???

  77. Hey i have a problem. When ever i type in cd/sdcard/root it says not found i believe. It’s exaclty where you said it should be.

  78. to the guys at unlockr.com just wanted to note that in the process of putting the command line prompts eg:
     su
cd /sdcard/root (at this line there is a white space between cd and the back slash symbol /,
you should lets this be known in your video because if the white space is not there the terminal will tell you cd /sdcard/root not found. for the people who or not computer savvy this could be a problem)

  79. i have done this for couple times i even had erased all files to root mytouch4g.. re do all this work.. and still have the S-on i dont know what else i can do.. i have every method n still not able to root my phone.. any help?

  80. When I reboot holding down the down volume, it just boots normally. I’m not really clear on how to turn it off and on. Do I turn it off hold ing down the volume button, and then on holding down the volume button?

  81. When I type in Su and enter it says SU: Permision denied
then after I type the rest and it starts doing its thing, first it says failed(operation not permitted)
then 2 lines down it says cannot open for write: permision denied.

Did the temp root not work or something?

  82. mine isnt in cd/sdcard/root    it says not found, mine is in /mnt/sdcard/root    but it says permission denied and when u type sh root.sh   and it says sh: cant open root.sh     what did i do wrong?
