How To: Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G/3GS (3.0.1 Firmware)

So as new iPhones and firmware come out, so does a new jailbreak and unlock. Here’s how to do the lastest Jailbreak and Unlock on your iPhone 3g or iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware on it.

UPDATE July 31st 2009: THE NEW 3.0.1 FIRMWARE IS OUT, IF YOU HAVE THIS FIRMWARE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO JAILBREAK YET (UNTIL WE CAN JAILBREAK 3.0.1). WHEN THAT HAPPENS, WE WILL POST AN UPDATE IN THIS POST.

1. Download the appropriate iPhone Firmware File:
iPhone 3G 3.0 Firmware
or
iPhone 3GS 3.0 Firmware

2. Then download the jailbreaking program:
iPhone Jailbreaking Software

3. Download iTunes
iTunesSetup

4. Once you have downloaded and installed iTunes, then open it.

5. Take your iPhone 3g/3GS and plug it in to the computer via the USB cable provided with the phone wait for the iPhone screen to pop up in iTunes (do not click anything in the screen though, just wait for it).

6. After iTunes reconizes the iPhone, turn off the iPhone.

7. Put the iPhone into DFU mode by:
I. Holding down the power button for 3 seconds till you see the Apple logo.
II. Once you see the Apple logo, and without letting go of the Power button, begin to hold the Home button as well (both buttons will be held at the same time) for 10 seconds and the screen has gone black.
III. Once the screen goes black, release the Power button but continue to hold the Home button for 20 more seconds or until iTunes pops up saying it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Once that happens let go of everything and set the phone down. (The phone screen will appear as if it is off).

8. Now in iTunes, HOLD SHIFT (Mac Users HOLD OPTION) and click on the Restore button. This will bring up a dialog box for you to select a file.

9. Find the appropriate Firmware file that you downloaded in step 1 and click OK. iTunes should begin restoring the phone with the file selected. When this completes, we will have a fresh 3.0 Firmware iPhone

10. Close iTunes but leave the phone plugged in through the USB cable.

11. Turn off the phone.

12. Open the Jailbreaking program you downloaded in step 2. Click Browse and look for the appropriate firmware file you downloaded in step 1 and click ok.

13. The program will ask you what you want to install, check off both Cydia and Icy and click continue.

14. It will ask you to make sure the phone is off before you begin. Click ok and get ready to hold buttons down (like we did before in step 7).

15. Follow it’s instructions for holding buttons down and when you are done the program will finish it’s process and the phone will reboot. Your phone is now Jailbroken!

Optional: If you want to unlock the phone click on our How To: Unlock the iPhone 3G/3GS video next.

  1. how about for the first iphone? and if u plug the iphone to install apps and music will it all get erase and do it from the start again?

  2. How long does it take to reboot in step 15? It went thru a couple of quick reboots, but now it seems to be stuck on a third reboot.

  3. Yeah, tried jailbreaking it three times now and each time same result. It says it’s rebooting yet it’s not doing anything.

  4. That’s what I’ve been told by friends who’s phones are jailbroken. I haven’t tried it as I haven’t been able to successfully jailbreak mine yet.

    1. Hey Trigger,

Did you do the first steps and boot into DFU mode then hit shift Restore and load the correct firmware file? Then continue with the procedure.

  5. Went through it step-by-step into DFU mode but it wouldn’t let me shift-restore, just plain restore. Running latest version of OSX and iTunes and used files linked in the article above. If I have time, I’m going to try again this evening.

  6. so i did all this..i installed Activiate mms thingy thru cydia nd since then my phone has been stuck on the apple logo. Any suggestions ?

  7. Hello Lumos,

Sorry it is supposed to say 3.0.1 as the process for 3.0 and 3.0.1 is the same exact process. I’m changing it now.
As for 3.1, I am under the impression that it is not out yet, is it?

  8. hello david

thank’s alot your a good help for us.

  10. for jailbreakers checking this out as of now dont upgrade to 3.1.1!!!

Unlockr, you need more tuts for this section like setting up inav, getting halo on itouch/iphone, cool sources, flashplayer for iphone/itouch, cydia tuts, dtunes and so on

  11. Unlockr,

Jailbreaking + Unlocking this iPhone version. Will i be able to switch from AT&T to T-MOBILE and still have 3G serice available? I was told the 3G Coverage by TMOBILE is a different frequency than AT&T and their tech support said i will not be able to get 3G. only “Edge” coverage.

    True or False?

    1. Jades,

As will all phone companies they use specific frequencies for their 3G. T-Mobile uses 1700, AT&T uses 1900, and the iPhone can only see 900/1900/2100 so it can get 3G on AT&T but not on T-Mobile unfortunately, it would get EDGE.

  12. Hey man can I use this process with a tmobile sim card? I’m unable to get my hands on an AT&T sim card…
    Thanks for the help

  13. does anyone know how to take music that you don’t want off the iphone. I have a tmobile sim card and it doesn’t allow me to use itunes..
    Thanks

    1. Casey,

I’ve used iTunes no problem with a T-Mobile SIM. If it doesn’t let you, just take out the T-Mobile SIM before you plug into iTunes, then put it back in when you are done syncing.

  14. Wow I’ve never been able to get it to work with a tmo sim, I got an AT&T sim from a buddy who works at best buy so I just switch them when I’m on Itunes

  15. Once i jailbreak the phone i just put my SIM card back in and everything should work fine.. I know its a Noob question but i just wanna make sure..

    1. Diego,

What? No. There is a new app store where almost all of the apps are free. And there are apps that have been banned, like wifi tethering you can get as well in the new jailbroken app store.

  16. Hiya! So I’m stuck on step 9 and now my iPhone is in a perpetual Recovery mode. My friend never confirmed it was on 3.0 or 4.0. Sooo… Since it never really reinstalled the base firmware and there might not be any firmware in it… Is this bad?

    1. Nio So So,

Restore the phone in iTunes. This will bring you to 4.0.1 and if you have a 3GS you will not be able to jailbreak until the new jailbreak comes out. If its a 3G then you’ll be able to use our jailbreak for the 3G on iOS4 to jailbreak.

  17. hey unlocker when i try to recover it it says iphone can not be restored an unknown error occurred (3194) can you tell me why is it cause i dont have an att sim card while trying to do this what i want to do is jailbreak it than unlock it for tmobile please respond thanx

  18. The iphone “iphone” could not be restored. this device isn’t eligible for the requested build.
I got this message what should I do?
