How To: Load a Custom ROM on the HTC Aria

I. Before You Begin

1. You MUST have done our How To Root the HTC Aria (Unrevoked Method) procedure before doing this one.

II. Loading a Custom ROM

1. Head over to our HTC Aria ROMs section and choose a ROM you want to try. Download it and save it to your computer (do NOT extract it, leave it as a .zip)

2. Plug the phone in via USB cable and mount the sd card so we can transfer files to it.

3. Copy the ROM .zip file and save it to the root of the sd card (NOT in any folders just on the sd card itself). Once it is done copying, unplug the phone from the usb cable.

4. Turn off the phone, then turn it back on by holding down Volume Down and Power until the white bootloader screen comes up (if it finds the PC36IMG.zip on your sd because you didn’t delete it, just say NO when it asks you if you want to update). Now using the volume buttons select Fastboot, then select Recovery and wait for the phone to boot into recovery mode.

5. Scroll to Wipe Data, select wipe data/factory reset and then select wipe dalvik cache.

6. Now scroll to Apply .zip from sd card and select the ROM .zip file we saved to the sdcard and wait for it to finish flashing. Once it is done, hit reboot and you are all set! Enjoy! If you want to flash a different ROM, simply redo this procedure and choose a different ROM.

  1. @theunlockr Please help! I put this ROM on my Aria and I don’t really like it! How do I go back to the normal Htc Sense? Help!!!!

  2. Thanks! Also, on the 5th step there is no choice to wipe dalvik cache. There is only “wipe cache partition” and to just wipe all user data. What should I do? Sorry for my stupid questions, im new to this!

    1. yeah i got tha same thing and i know its rooted, i downloaded 3 different roms and idk what to do next im stuck on that

      1. I installed a liberated aria ROM and I can’t install 3 partys apps.. the cel phone continues bloking non-markets apps 🙁

  3. Hi, I have a HTC Aria unlocked by code and in spanish. If I install a custom ROM I lose the spanish language or the unlocked status?
    Thanks for your help.

  4. Well after about several attempts I was able to successfully install the drivers, root the phone, and flash the ROM to version liberated_aria_ddx_R012_signed! I think the primary issue was that during rooting, perhaps I didn’t wait long enough after removing the battery and putting it back in to boot. I absolutely love the fact that I have gotten rid of the att apps that were not being used and only taking up valuable memory!

I do have on minor question: When I power down the phone and plug it into the wall charger, instead of getting that fancy little battery charging screen, I now get the ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1 menu from the flash process where the first prompt is to: reboot system now, followed by options to wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, install zip from sdcard, etc.

Did I do something wrong? Or is this what is now “normal” for my phone? Is there an app to be installed that will default to the battery icon?

Thanks for all of your help that you’ve done via your posted instructions! They are great!

  7. Same way you flashed it in the first place. Put in on the SD Card, boot into recovery, and flash it. You shouldn’t need to wipe if its the same ROM just a newer version but some developers recommend wiping anyway (try it without wiping and if it gets stuck on booting then boot back into recovery wipe data and reflash it).

I am having a big problem installing the liberated rom. On the recovery screen I don’t have the option that says wipe dalvik cache. When I go to select apply.zip from sd card it tells me there is no such file on record. However, I know I downloaded the rom correctly. This may or may not be significant. When I downloaded liberated to my computer it didn’t appear as a zip file It appear as a WinRar icon. Therefore
I don’t know if it was copy correctly to the SD Card. I need a lot of help with this

  9. Will putting this custom rom delete all of my pics contacts and other files on my phone that it already has with htc sense?

  11. This is my first android phone and for some reason i keep getting “internal error: am reported error starting service.” ??? don’t know what that means, but doesn’t sound like a good message. I tried it on winXP and win7, both give me the same errors when using unrEVOked.. any solutions from anyone will definitely help.

  12. Thanks for this tutorial. I was able to install the Liberated Aria ROM without trouble. I am having an interesting problem though. When I use Titanium Backup to uninstall any apps the phone just restarts. I thought it was just for HTC apps like Peep, but I can’t uninstall Astro either. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Thanks.

  13. hello! just trying to decide whether or not i want to root my new aria.
can you please tell me, will rooting my phone give me the ability to ONLY delete apps i don’t want (i.e. ATT’s trash apps), or must i completely wipe it and install a new ROM?

    1. After rooting, there is an app in the market — just search for “root” — I think it is called root uninstaller. That claims to allow you to remove the ATT software without having to reflash your whole OS. That being said, you will still be locked out in other ways because ATT restricts what you can and can’t install on your phone. Best to install the Liberated ROM.

I followed all of the steps and when I tried to install the Froyo ROM it says installing for a sec and then goes back to the Recovery menu screen. It does not look as if it is installing completely. When I reboot, I am still on 2.1. Help. I am using the liberated fr008 ROM and the ClockWork recovery from unrevoked. Nothing has been working.

  16. thanks for the tutorial, i did it, the phone works fine, every app is working . my only questions is why is the battery life so short, it dies in less than 6 hours, I’m using the ddx version

  17. where can i find third party apps and custom roms other than the three listed? I knew nothing about rooting and roms before today. With your site, Ive done it all and can easily do it again. GREAT JOB!

    1. Did you install the legit ATT upgrade to Froyo 2.2 before trying to use the Unrevoked root? Luckily I had an extra aria (att sent my wife a new aria cause hers had horrible sound quality so I was able to try this with the bad phone before I sent it back). After installing the legit 2.2 upgrade with htc sync, Unrevoked could not root the aria. I tried Unrevoked and superoneclick. Neither one was capable of rooting the Aria with the legitmate 2.2 update. Sorry. I’m sure the cell phone freeing heros at xda and unrevoked will have a fix for this soon, but as of two weeks ago, it couldn’t be done with the current programs.
