How to Install Custom Recovery and Root the HTC One Mini

The HTC One Mini, a handset for people who don’t want a big HTC device like the HTC One, is not so mini if you look at its specs.  The device features a dual-core 1.4GHz CPU with 1GB RAM, 16GB of onboard memory, and a 4.3 inch touchscreen display.  What could make this device more productive?  Why, rooting it of course and that is exactly what this guide below will help you do!

I.  Before You Begin

1.  Back up everything you feel is important before you start.

2.  Charge your device to 75% or more to prevent unwanted shutdowns during the procedure.

3.  You will need a HTC One Mini with an unlocked bootloader for this procedure to work.

II.  Necessary Downloads

1.  Twrp-2.6.0.0.img

2.  Android.zip

3.  UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.51.zip

III.  Installing the Custom Recovery on the HTC One Mini

1.  Put your device into fastboot mode.  To do this, with the device powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button, then the Power button.

2.  Connect your device to your PC.  If any drivers are installed at this point, let them do so and continue afterwards.

3.  Extract Android.zip to a folder on your desktop.

4.  Copy Twrp-2.6.0.0.img to the extracted Android folder.

5.  Open up a command prompt on the Android folder [hold shift, right click on the folder and select ‘Open Command Prompt Window here‘]

6.  Run the following command:

fastboot flash recovery Twrp-2.6.0.0.img

7.  Reboot your device.

That’s it!  You now have a custom recovery (TWRP Touch Recovery to be specific) on your device!  To boot into your new custom recovery, with the device powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button and then the Power button, and then select the recovery option.

IV.  Rooting the HTC One Mini

1.  Connect your device to your PC and copy UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.51.zip to your device’s SD card.

2.  Reboot your device to recovery mode.

3.  Tap on Install and then select UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.51.zip.

4.  Swipe the ‘Swipe to Confirm Flash‘ button to begin the flashing process.

5.  Reboot your device once the flashing is done.

You should now hold a completely rooted HTC One Mini in your hands.  Look for the SuperSU app in your app drawer or install an app like Root Checker Lite to verify!

  1. hey,
neither of the two zip files are extractable – might be doing something wrong but tried a couple of times and the files appear to be corrupt – could you re-upload or verify if the files are ok?

    cheeers

  2. I put the superuser files onto my device then put it into recovery, try to install them but then it doesn’t appear when in TWRP. Any ideas?

I have the same problem, I cannot see the .zip file when I’m in TWRP, I copied the file to the sdcard folder, I even tried with clockworkmod and same problem, I cannot see the zip file. USD debug is on. Any idea what am I missing?… it’ so frustating.

    1. Mauricio, where are you checking exactly? If you have dropped it directly on your sdcard (not inside any folders), look for the zip file in the following paths – /mnt/sdcard0; /mnt/sdcard/ /storage/sdcard0; /storage/sdcard/ or extsdcard, you should definitely find it there!

  4. Hmm, followed the instructions given but the command prompt gave me this:

    C:UsersJamesDesktopandroid>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

    sending ‘recovery’ (8106 KB)…
    OKAY [ 1.116s]
    writing ‘recovery’…
    (bootloader) signature checking…
    FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
    finished. total time: 1.838s

    Any suggestions?
