How to Root the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (XXUDNE6)

Although it’s been almost two years since the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 was released, we think the device has the innards needed for it to run Android 4.4 (quad-core 1.4GHz CPU with 2GB RAM) and so thought Samsung too, which resulted in this huge device being updated to Android 4.4.2.  This was great news for all those Note 10.1 owners but for the not-so-small section of users that rooted it, this was sort of bad news as it broke root access.  The guide below shold help them remedy that if they are still interested in rooting their Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 running the new XXUDNE6 firmware.

Rooting is the process of gaining administrative rights on your Android device. Once we root our Android device, we can then make changes to it to customize it well beyond what it normally can do.

Once you have root access on your Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, you’ll be able to:

  • Remove apps that were preinstalled by your carrier/manufacturer from your device.
  • Free up storage space (because of the above benefit).
  • Increase battery life (apps that might have been running constantly can be removed).
  • Increase performance (after removing apps that are always running, the device will be less bogged down and run smoother).
  • Update to a new version of Android (by flashing a custom recovery/ROM, see the end of this procedure for more info on that).
  • Tons of other customizations when you use your new found administrative rights to flash a custom ROM (again, see the end of this procedure for more info on that).

Interested? Here’s how to root your Galaxy Note 10.1:

 I.  Before You Begin

1.   Rooting your device may void your warranty or damage your device. Proceed at your own risk.

2.  Charge your device to 75% or more before you begin to prevent unwanted shutdowns.  Also, back up everything you feel is important, just in case.

3.  Make sure you have the necessary drivers installed before you begin.  Installing Samsung Kies usually takes care of this.

4.  This procedure is only for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8000) running the XXUDNE6 Android 4.4.2 firmware.  Do not try this if you are not running the stated firmware.

II.  Necessary Downloads

III.  Rooting the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

1.  Extract CF-Auto-Root-p4noterf-p4noterfxx-gtn8000.zip to a folder on your desktop.

2.  From the extracted folder, double-click on Odin3-v3.07.exe to start the Odin tool.

3.  Click on the PDA button, navigate to the location of CF-Auto-Root-p4noterf-p4noterfxx-gtn8000.tar.md5 (you should find it in the folder you extracted above), select it and click on Open to load it on to Odin.

4.  Boot your device into Download mode.  To do this, with the device powered off, press and hold the Volume Down + Home + Power buttons simultaneously until you get to Download mode.

5.  Connect your device to your PC using a compatible USB cable.  Once connected the ID:COM field on Odin should show the message ‘ADDED!’ which means your device is recognized and ready to be flashed.  If not, reinstall drivers and try again.

6.  Under the Option section, make sure that only Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked.  Do not tick any other checkboxes as you may end up bricking your device.

7.  Click on Start and wait for the PASS! message on Odin, and for your device to reboot.

Your Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is now completely rooted and ready for any root-requiring apps you throw at it!
