How to Root the Toshiba Thrive

We’ve already reported that the Toshiba Thrive has been rooted and is now rocking the ClockworkMod Recovery. The device had been in debate because of some of the issues related with it, however, those are soon going to be forgotten with these new customization methods. This guide teaches how you can root your Toshiba Thrive device and get the root-only apps up and running on it. Don’t worry, the procedure’s quite easy to follow and we’re here to help you out if you’ve any questions. So, here you go:

I. Before You Begin:

1. This will void the warranty of your device. However, you can reinstate the warranty by unrooting the device if there’s any unrooting procedure available.

2. This works on Windows based PCs only.

3. You must have ADB installed on your PC. You can learn how to install it from here.

4. This works on the following ROMs only:

HMJ37.01.5.0032
HMJ37.03.5.0006
HMJ37.05.5.0006
HMJ37.05.5.0008
HMJ37.08.5.0001
HMJ37.31.5.0011

II. Downloading Required Files:

1. Thrive Toolkit (Download link’s given at the bottom of the first post)

III. Rooting the Toshiba Thrive:

1. Download and place the Toolkit archive onto your Desktop.

2. Extract files from the archive to your Desktop.

3. Connect your device to your PC using the USB cable.

4. Double-click on Easy_Flash_Tool.bat file you extracted to your Desktop.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

6. And you should be rooted now!

Excellent! Your Thrive’s been successfully rooted and you should be able to see the Superuser app installed in your App Drawer. Now it’s up to you how you want to customize your device!

IV. Flash a Custom Recovery Image (Optional):

1. If you would like to flash a custom recovery image in order to flash custom ROMs, head to the How To Flash a Custom Recovery Image on the Toshiba Thrive to learn how to do that.

  1. On trying to use the Toshiba Thrive flash tool I encountered
    some difficulty.

My HMJ37.31.5.0011 us is on the list.

I have set USB to debug and connected the Thrive to my Win 7
computer, then ran the bat file.

I rebooted with vol/power combo and selected the first of
the two icons (a folder icon).

The problem comes at “5. Follow the on-screen
    instructions.” Then things get
    murky.

When I select the first icon (folder) above I get

    “Android system recover
    …recovery utility

    and a Menu with

    apply update from external storage

    wipe data/factory reset

    Wipe cache partition”

In the bat file menu I select “root your device”
and then HMJ37.31.5.0011 which I have (tried 11 and 12) and I get
    “waiting” and nothing happens.

  2. I just saw a post about HMJ37.31.5.0011 implying that to use your bat utility I would need to downgrade to a previous version. Have not yet found the program to do this.

  3. I downgraded then tried again.

So now I have build HMJ37.01.5.32 and selected that using the bat tool in “fastboot” mode and with usb debug mode on.

Result was it says “waiting for device” and it just sits there. No change in the bat screen or the Thrive screen.

Does it work with ICS 4.0.4, Build number IMM76D.01.000072022, kernel 2.6.39.4-g2388484? This is a US Thrive 7″. Thanks
